Salty scoop for your health

Our body needs salt for its normal functioning. Consume it in moderation.

Deepa Gupta | New Delhi |

“Salt to taste” is not just for taste. Ask your body. Besides balancing the sweetness and suppressing other flavours such as bitterness or sourness, our body needs salt for its normal functioning. Consume it in moderation. That’s the mantra to good nutritional status.

Salt is mainly composed of two minerals- 40 per cent sodium and 60 per cent chloride. So, it is called sodium chloride as well. Earlier it was used as a food preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria that cause food to go bad. But today we know multiple benefits of adding reasonable salt to our diet.

Our body needs proper amount of electrolytes, including salt to keep functioning uninterruptedly. By triggering the thirst mechanism, electrolyte makes us to consume adequate amount of water that keeps our kidneys intact and blood pressure normal.

Salt keeps the calcium and other minerals in the blood stream. It stimulates the adrenal glands.

It helps in preventing muscle cramping by stimulating muscle contraction.

Don’t forget to consume it in hot summer months as it prevents heat and sun strokes.

It keeps insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides level in control.

It helps in preventing heart diseases and heart strokes.

Taking high amounts of salt can be harmful, but consuming too little may be just as bad for your health. The optimal intake is somewhere between the two extremes. Too much amount may lead to high water retention and hypertension. It may add to your waistline and not good for overall health. Too little can create issues in tissue-water and acid base balance. According to American Heart Association an ideal limit of sodium is no more than 1500 mg per day for most of the healthy adults. It is less than ¾ th teaspoon of salt.

Keep salt in check in your diet pattern. Give more emphasis on fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products, nuts, fish and whole grains. Limit red meat and sweets. It will help you limit your sodium intake. Sometimes a small adjustment can bring big results when it comes to health.

West Indies vs Pakistan: Spat with Mahmood reason behind Sohail’s axing

Sohail Khan has been dropped from all formats for the tour to the West Indies.

PTI | Karachi |

An argument with bowling coach, Azhar Mahmood has cost Pakistan pacer Sohail Khan dearly as he has been dropped from all formats for the tour to the West Indies, a newspaper report said.

Although chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq and national team head coach Mickey Arthur have claimed that Sohail has been dropped for the West Indies tour because of fitness issues, but the 'Jang' newspaper reported on Monday that the pacer was dropped on disciplinary grounds.

The newspaper reported that the argument took place during the Pakistan Super League where Sohail played for Karachi Kings franchise, which also had Arthur and Azhar as the franchise's head and bowling coach.

"Sohail at one point during the play-off against Peshawar Zalmi flatly refused to listen to what advice the bowling coach gave him. He also accused Azhar of always favouring and being soft on his two favorite bowlers, Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Aamir," the report said.

"Sohail told Azhar that he (Azhar) was always targeting him in the Pakistan team and that he couldn't tolerate this any longer."

The report said that Azhar, a former Pakistan all-rounder, was extremely upset after the outburst by Sohail and reported the matter to Arthur and also gave Sohail a piece of his mind in the Karachi Kings dressing room in Dubai.

Apparently the matter was then brought to the notice of the chief selector but he insists that Sohail's ouster from the West Indies tour was mainly because of his fitness and fielding issues.

But the newspaper claimed that it was the alteration with Azhar and his attitude which eventually led to his ouster from the Pakistan team.

The selectors and Arthur had faced lot of criticism for dropping Sohail, who was declared the best bowler of the PSL last month.

China urges US, North Korea to maintain calm

IANS | Beijing |

China on Monday called on the US and North Korea to exercise restraint and avoid escalation of tensions after the US deployed a nuclear aircraft carrier close to the Korean peninsula.

The US Pacific Command confirmed on Saturday that it has mobilised the nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and its attack group to waters near North Korea in response to North Korea's launch of a medium-range missile into the sea on April 5, Efe news reported.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press conference that Beijing is closely monitoring the situation.

The Carl Vinson, which was on its way to Australia after participating in annual joint military exercises with South Korea just a month back, was steered back toward the Korean Peninsula, following US President Donald Trump's meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Florida last week.

During the meet, both leaders discussed the need to prevent fresh provocations by Pyongyang, an ally of Beijing.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova bests Angelique Kerber, wins 4th title at Monterrey

Overall, an encouraging sign from Kerber, who hasn't had the best year in 2017.

IANS | Mexico City |

Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova put her best foot forward in the third set to defeat Germany's No. 1-ranked Angelique Kerber 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, winning her fourth title at the Monterrey Open tennis tournament.

The 25-year-old Pavlyuchenkova – who won the tourney in 2010, 2011 and 2013 – gained points by breaking the 29-year-old Kerber's serve in the third and fifth games of the first set on Sunday. She then took advantage of errors committed by the German to break her serve in the 10th game and take the set 6-4, reports Efe.

Kerber recovered, however, with a precise drive, managing to garner 18 winners and forcing the Russian to commit 16 unforced errors to take the second set, breaking Pavlyuchenkova's serve in the third game.

After her serve was broken again a few game later, the Russian threw her racket down, earning a warning. She seemed furious with herself. She gave up the eighth game without any fight.

But from the first volley of the third set, it was another Pavlyuchenkova – secure and dominant – seeking out the far corners of the court, firing shots to break Kerber's serve in the second game.

The Russian broke the German's serve again in the fourth game, going up 4-0 and then 5-1 but then took the seventh game for the title.

Kerber had a career year in 2016, winning the Australian Open and the US Open, and finishing as the runner-up at Wimbledon. But until Sunday, she had not reached a final in 2017 and had repeatedly lost to players ranked outside the top 10.

Go Indian: Bandhgalas over English suits

PTI | New Delhi |

The practice of wearing an English sut or a tuxedo on special occasions is increasingly becoming passe for Indian men, who are now seen donning royal ethnic attires like bandhgala and angrakha.

According to designer Sabyasachi Mukherji, Indian men, particularly grooms, are "suddenly realising the importance of being Indian".

"They are not ready to wear a bandhgala with trousers any more, they want to wear them with a churidar. They want to wear achkans and angrakha," he told PTI.

Bandhgala is in fact a more ruly successor of the unstructured angrakha that had its origins in ancient India (7000 BCE-500 CE) as a court outfit.

Over the centuries, the classic angrakha shaped itself into the better fitting bandhgala, and has now become a powerful statement in contemporary fashion, especially with Hollywood stars like Vin Diesel and political personalities like Prime Minister Narendra Modi opting to wear it at public occasions.

he essential change in the silhouette of the traditional attire was brought about by the introduction of the structured
British jacket which altered the then existing boxy pattern considerably.

"The British jacket gave the traditional bandhgala a new shape, a brisker silhouette and, most importantly, due importance to the trousers because of its short jacket style appearance," designer Nikhil Thampi of 'Shantanu and Nikhil' told PTI.

he redesigned bandhgala, which soon became a popular formal and semi-formal uniform among the royals, has now become a must-have in every man's wardrobe.

Whether it's a wedding soiree or a formal dinner, the bandhgala renders a sense of sophistication and the fact that
it flatters all body types makes it a wardrobe intrinsic.

he popularity of the bandhgalas in the contemporary times, largely lies in the unique innovations by Indian designers, who have made it relevant for the 21st century fashion, while also retaining its deep-rooted Indianness.
Designer Raghavendra Rathore, who himself is of royal descent, has reinvented the timeless attire worn by royalty
and nobility over generations, giving it a dashing new avatar.

he magic of his style is in the cuts that add flamboyance to the Bandhgala's legacy, which is now an accepted attire for a black-tie event across the globe.

Rathore suggests that the 'Prince coat' looks best when worn with yellow buttons

Sad that Sindh not a part of India, says LK Advani

PTI | New Delhi, |

BJP patriarch LK Advani on Monday rued that the Pakistani province of Sindh, where he was born, is not a part of independent India.

He was speaking in the presence of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at an event organised by the India Foundation here.

"I do not know how many of you have this realisation, the realisation that I have that there was one part of India, when India was undivided, not independent and was under British rule, there was one such part where I was born.

"When India became independent, along with our independence, that part got separated from us. The place I was born – Sindh – is not part of India, it is not with us. I and my comrades, those who lived in that part feel sad (about this)," he said.

He said since the Bangladesh Prime Minister had come to the country, he thought of sharing his anguish.

"Since Sheikh Hasina has come here, I thought I would mention the anguish of my mind in front of her," he said.

Advani had expressed his sadness in the past too.

On an earlier occasion, he had said that India appears "incomplete" without Sindh in its territory.

The 89-year-old leader had said this at an event earlier while lamenting that Karachi, the capital of the Pakistani province, where he was born in a Sindhi family was not a part of India anymore.

"At times I feel sad that Karachi and Sindh are not parts of India anymore. I was very active in RSS during my childhood days in Sindh. It is matter of dismay. I believe that India appears incomplete without Sindh," Advani had said.
