Fresh lawsuit against Uber for hiding LiDAR technology

IANS | New York |

Google's self-driving car company Waymo has filed new claims in its lawsuit against Uber, alleging that the taxi-ride hailing company withheld information about LiDAR technology it is using in its development of self-driving cars.

According to a report in Tech Crunch, Waymo also claimed in its lawsuit filed on Friday that Uber participated in a "cover up" to keep its second, un-named design hidden from the court.

In January, Waymo filed a lawsuit against global ride-hailing app Uber for allegedly stealing trade secrets and technology from it.

The lawsuit, filed against Uber's self-driving vehicle unit Otto that it bought in 2016 for $680 million, argued that former Waymo manager Anthony Levandowski took information when he left the company and later co-founded Otto in January 2016.

However, earlier in April, Uber claimed that its "Light Detection and Ranging" (LiDAR) system, code-named Fuji, was not ready and therefore was not being used in its self-driving cars, which rely instead on commercial systems furnished by Velodyne.

Waymo argued that Uber worked on a second system that more closely copies Waymo's designs (Waymo's LiDAR relies on a single-lens system, while the Fuji is multi-lens).

In its post in January, Waymo said, "Recently, we uncovered evidence that Otto and Uber have taken and are using key parts of Waymo's self-driving technology."

"Today, we're taking legal action against Otto and its parent company Uber for misappropriating Waymo trade secrets and infringing our patents."

The company said that it found that six weeks before his resignation, Levandowski downloaded over 14,000 highly confidential and proprietary design files from Waymo's various hardware systems, including designs of Waymo's custom-built LiDAR and circuit board.

"To gain access to Waymo's design server, Levandowski searched for and installed specialised software onto his company-issued laptop. Once inside, he downloaded 9.7GB of Waymo's highly confidential files and trade secrets, including blueprints, design files and testing documentation," the company noted.

Levandowski copied the data to an external drive. He later wiped and reformatted the laptop in an attempt to erase forensic fingerprints.

"We discovered that other former Waymo employees, now at Otto and Uber, downloaded additional highly confidential information pertaining to our custom-built LiDAR, including supplier lists, manufacturing details and statements of work with highly technical information," the company said.

Waymo said that given the overwhelming facts that their technology was stolen, they had no choice but to defend their investment and development of this unique technology.

Save the earth with simple lifestyle changes

SNS | New Delhi |

Today, as the world observes Earth Day, many messages are being sent out by different leaders, groups, companies and people across the world. Man's lifestyle has affected the world and its existence, including climate change. Hence, few lifestyle changes can turn things around to save the earth and check global warming.

True, small things matter and simple easy steps strictly followed by all can go a long way in creating a better world to live. While each should do their bit to save the earth and enhance living, Google's Earth Day Doodle suggests some important changes that are easy to follow.

Google suggests conserving wildlife, marine life, eating less meat, car-pooling and using eco-friendly devices.

Other simple things one can do is plant more trees, make small kitchen gardens, nature flower gardens, use solar energy, recycle waste products, save water, avoid taking cars where you can walk and clean your surroundings.

One can also help farmers. Take a trip to villages and create awareness about saving their crops and boosting their yeild and other ways of saving the earth.

The little things we do can save this beautiful green earth.

"Whatever you do today, we hope you're able to take a moment to savour and cherish this boundless, stunning Earth that we inhabit," Google said in a statement.

While many world leaders and celebs pledge to make changes, let's all, as citizens of the earth, do our bit, make small changes to cherish and make a huge difference the easy way.

US seeks help for dismantling financial networks of terror

PTI | Washington |

The US has sought the help of the international community in particular multilateral financial institutions in targeting and dismantling financial networks of terrorist organisations.

“Targeting and dismantling the financial networks of terrorist organisations is a top US priority, and improving anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing (AML/CFT) systems is critical to this goal,” US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, said in his address to the IMF.

The United States, he said, welcomes the IMF's important work providing technical assistance to member countries to strengthen their regulatory and supervisory frameworks with respect to anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism.

“It is also imperative that the IMF be a leader in fighting corruption,” he said as the worlds finance ministers and governors of central banks gathered in the US Capital to attend the Spring Meeting of the IMF and the World Bank.

Noting that the global economy continues to exhibit large and persistent external imbalances, which contributes to the sentiment that the existing international monetary and trading system does not benefit all, Mnuchin said in this environment, the US calls upon the IMF to more robustly fulfill its surveillance mandate in pursuit of strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive global growth.

“This should include strong analysis of member exchange rates and external imbalances in both the External Sector Report and in Article IV surveillance. The IMF should also identify specific policy adjustments at the country level to achieve substantially improved balance in the overall system,” he said.

The US looks to the IMF to highlight where surplus countries can more forcefully contribute to support symmetric adjustment in pursuit of a fairer global system.

“Countries with large external surpluses and sound public finances have a particular responsibility for contributing to a more robust global economy by deploying fiscal policy aggressively to boost growth and help facilitate global rebalancing,” Mnuchin said.

“In our view, excessively large trade surpluses, like excessively large trade deficits, are not conducive to supporting a free and fair trading system,” he said.

“Fair and transparent currency practices are also a critical part of ensuring that the benefits of trade are shared equitably. Countries should abide by their exchange rate commitments, including commitments to refrain from competitive devaluation, to not use monetary policies to target exchanges rates for competitive purposes and to consult closely on exchange rates,” Mnuchin said.

The US economy, he said, continues to expand at a steady pace and forecasts suggest stronger growth this year and next.

Nevertheless, the US economy continues to face challenges, with growth last year languishing below pre-crisis levels amid weak business investment, Mnuchin said, adding that the economy has gone through periods of disappointing performance before, however, and a continuation of this weak growth is not pre-ordained.

“In response, the administration is undertaking an ambitious policy agenda that includes tax reform, deregulation and infrastructure investment to sustainably raise US economic output and employment,” he said.

“In tandem with our domestic reforms we will continue to promote an expansion of trade with those partners committed to market-based competition, while more rigorously defending ourselves against unfair trade practices,” the Finance Secretary said.

Outside the US, while the IMF and private analysts expect global growth to expand this year and next, there are questions about how sustainable and broad-based this growth will be, he added. Medium-term growth prospects remain muted due in part to the decline in total factor productivity, continued weak domestic demand, and banking-sector problems in some countries, he said.

Shocking! This show to go off air?

SNS | New Delhi |

Zee TV has been going through rough times since a while now. Although it launched a bunch of brand new shows in the past three months, including Bin Kuch Kahe and Piyaa Albela, along with the TRP gainer Kumkum Bhagya, the channel had to take a firm decision to bid adieu to the show Jamai Raja.

Just when viewers thought that this is it, the channel decided to cut off another show.

The recently launched show Sankyukt starring Kiran Kumar and Shubangi Latkar in lead roles will be going off air soon.

The show was launched in September 2016 and had veteran actors in lead roles to pull viewership.

However, in spite of sporting different content and a rich cast, the show did not manage to gain TRP.

If rumours are to be believed, then the cast members have been informed about the developments and apparently the last episode will be telecast in May.

The show is expected to be replaced by a new show Aisi Deewangi.

First coal-free day in UK since Industrial Revolution

IANS | London |

The UK went a full day without using coal to generate electricity for the first time since the Industrial Revolution, according to the National Grid.

The energy provider said Friday's lack of coal usage was a "watershed" moment, the BBC reported.

Britain's longest continuous energy period without coal until now was 19 hours – first achieved last May, and again on Thursday.

The government plans to phase out Britain's last plants by 2025 in order to cut carbon emissions.

Friday is thought to be the first time the nation has not used coal to generate electricity since the world's first centralised public coal-fired generator opened in 1882, at Holborn Viaduct in London.

Cordi O'Hara of the National Grid said: "To have the first working day without coal since the start of the industrial revolution is a watershed moment in how our energy system is changing."

"The UK benefits from highly diverse and flexible sources of electricity. Our energy mix continues to change and National Grid adapts system operation to embrace these changes," the BBC quoted O'Hara as saying on Friday.

According to the National Grid, around half of British energy on Friday came from natural gas, with about a quarter coming from nuclear plants.

Wind, biomass, and imported energy were also used.

The last deep coal mine in the UK, Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire, closed in December 2015, bringing to an end centuries of deep coal mining in Britain.

India encouraging global defence companies to set up units: Jaitley

PTI | Washington |

India is formulating policy to help major global defence companies set up manufacturing units in the country in collaboration with Indian firms, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday.

“Under our changed policy, we are in the future going to concentrate not merely in buying from the rest of the world, but encouraging global defence majors in collaboration with Indian companies to set up manufacturing units in India, Jaitley said at a reception hosted by India's Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna.

Jaitley, who holds the additional charge of the Defence Ministry, said the Union Government has made the initial policy changes while some more are being planned.

“Hopefully in the years to come, the impact of this change as far as defence manufacturing policy is concerned would be visible in India. It is receiving a good response from major manufacturers, Jaitley said without giving any details.

Jaitley was given the additional charge of the Defence Ministry apart from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs after his predecessor Manohar Parrikar was made the Chief Minister of Goa.

Using cricket lingo, he described himself as the “night watchman” for these two ministries.

“One of my principal responsibilities is to look after the finances of the government. There are some additional responsibilities that keep coming, he said.

“In the US you do not have much of cricket. In India it is our favourite game. In the game of cricket, we call it night watchman, he said, referring to his dual role.

“The Prime Minister has asked me to fill in that role in some other departments. But my principal requirement is in finance, Jaitley said.

Jaitley, leading an Indian delegation, arrived here on April 20, to attend the annual Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

In addition to his meetings and presentations at the annual Spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, Jaitley is also scheduled to attend meetings of other multilateral forums including that of the G-20 finance ministers.

I’m happy on red beacon ban: Hema Malini

IANS | Mumbai |

Veteran actress Hema Malini, who attended Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Awards 2017 on Friday, says that she is happy with Indian government's decision to ban red beacons from vehicles.

"It's a great move. I am really happy with Indian government's decision of red beacon ban because from my constituency, there are lot of people who make unnecessary demands to have red light on their vehicles so now we are at least free with it," Hema Malini, a BJP MP from Mathura constituency, said

The actress-politician also reacted on the comment made by Bacchu Kadu, an independent MLA from Maharashtra who courted controversy after he dragged her into a row over suicides by farmers.

"Hema Malini drinks everyday, but does she commit suicide," Kadu had asked during a press conference in Nanded district.

Reacting to that, Hema Malini said: "Initially I decided to keep quiet about this man's antics because I didn't want to give him publicity. But then everyone close to me thought it was wrong to let him get away with it.

"If you react to every person who uses your name, that's all you will be doing. On the other hand, if you ignore such people, they're encouraged to try their tricks on others too. So what do you do? I've consulted my legal team and we're all set to take him to court. He will have to issue a public apology. Failing that we'll file a criminal defamation case," she said.

Hema Malini was given the Dada Saheb Phalke award for her immense contribution in Indian cinema.

Le Pen demands closure of all Islamist mosques in France

IANS | Paris |

The deadly attack on a police bus in the French capital here has dramatically changed the course of the presidential poll campaign with the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen, demanding the closure of all Islamist mosques, a media report said.

It was unclear whether the Thursday night attack would tip the balance of the vote in favour of Le Pen, who has vowed to take a tough line on "Islamic terrorism", CNN reported.

At a televised news conference on Friday, Le Pen called for the closure of all "Islamist" mosques in France, the expulsion of hate preachers and the reinstatement of French borders.

People on the French security services' watch list for radicalisation should also be expelled from France and have their French citizenship revoked, she said.

The three main candidates — Centre-right candidate François Fillon, Le Pen and independent centrist Emmanuel Macron — cancelled campaign events and instead made televised statements as under French election rules, Friday was due to be the final day of campaigning before Sunday's first round of voting.

In the televised statements they competed to talk tough on security and vowed a crackdown on Islamic State (IS) terror group that took responsibility for the Thursday night attack, CNN reported.

One police officer died after a gunman wielding a machine gun leapt out of a car and opened fire on the Champs-Elysees, Paris's most famous boulevard, as candidates were engaging in their final TV debate.

Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, however, has accused Le Pen of trying to capitalise on the attack before the first round of polling on Sunday.

IS had swiftly claimed the attack was carried out by one of its "fighters".

The assailant — Karim Cheurfi, a 39-year-old French national with a long and violent criminal record. He was shot dead as he tried to make his escape.

Prosecutors said a note defending IS fell out of his pocket, although there was no previous evidence of radicalisation.

He was also carrying the addresses of police stations.

French authorities, including the domestic security service, began a counterterrorism investigation into Cheurfi last month after learning of his increasing determination to establish communication with IS fighters in Syria and Iraq, a source close to the investigation told CNN on Friday.

Ready to respond to US aggression: North Korea

IANS | Pyongyang |

North Korea said it is ready to respond to aggression from the US, amid the deployment of an American nuclear aircraft carrier in waters close to the Korean peninsula.

"The situation on the Korean peninsula and in the region has reached an extremely dangerous phase due to the mad-cap nuclear war provocations of the US," the Foreign Ministry said Friday in a statement reported by state-run news agency KCNA.

"The authorities of the Trump Administration are spouting a load of rubbish calling for browbeating North Korea," the statement said, adding that the US said it would deploy "a nuclear aircraft carrier and its strike groups in the waters off the Korean Peninsula."

Pyongyang said it will not be frightened by these threats and that its army is closely watching US maneuvers and waiting for an order to counter any threat immediately.

The statement added that North Korea is a peace-loving country but also a nuclear power that is unafraid of war and would not hesitate to exercise all options for a counter-attack.

Tension has been escalating on the Korean peninsula since the beginning of April after Washington hinted at a pre-emptive strike against Pyongyang, which was followed by a new missile test by North Korea on April 16, Efe news reported.

Two weeks ago, the US announced it had ordered the deployment of nuclear aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson on the Korean peninsula, a move that was interpreted as a warning against Pyongyang's arms development program.

However the carrier was at the time participating in joint exercises with Australia in the Indian Ocean.

It is now heading to the region and will carry out maneuvers in the waters of the Sea of Japan near the Korean peninsula.

Japan also sent two destroyers to participate in the maneuvers from April 25 to 28, while Seoul is also considering participating in these combined naval drills.

Jo Wood slams EasyJet after being kicked off overbooked flight

PTI | London |

Jo Wood, the former wife of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, has lashed out at EasyJet after being kicked off an overbooked flight from Spain to London.

Jo and her partner Paul Scarborough were booked to fly from Murcia in Spain to Gatwick in London earlier this week with the low-cost airline, when they discovered that EasyJet only had one seat for them both, reported Daily Mirror.

"I arrived at Murcia Airport, checked in, had no luggage, went through security and had my boarding pass. Just before we were about to go onto the plane, they pulled us aside. because I was with my fella, and said 'one of you can get on and one of you has to stay'," Jo says.

"I said 'hold on a minute this is ridiculous, I bought my ticket three weeks ago, why should we stay?' We've bought our tickets. And they said they had overbooked.

"I reckon it's because we had no luggage, we were easy to take off. I was furious because I had to get back for work the next day. They didn't stand there and ask who would come off the flight! Nobody said that – they just took us aside."

Jo, 62, and her 53-year-old partner ended up paying to fly home on a later flight on Ryanair instead.

An EasyJet spokesman said, "We were sorry to hear of Miss Wood's experience and would like to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.

"While there was one seat available, we understand that she wanted to fly with her travel companion. We have been in contact with Miss Wood directly to apologise.

Eva, who is currently enjoying her Hawaiian getaway in celebration of Jose Baston's 49th birthday, has taken to her social media account to share some photos and videos of her luxury break, in which she shows off a more prominent stomach.

Fans have since believed she may be expecting her first child. But Eva laughs off the baby talk and insists she's just "bloated."

Posting her Snapchat story, Eva says, "I saw some pictures of myself really fat, on a boat, I have to tell you all I did was eat cheese. Everybody's saying I'm pregnant, and I'm not. I was just lactose intolerant, apparently."

While walking around her beach-side property, she continues, "I just had to share because my whole family is calling me asking me if I'm pregnant.

"Yes, I looked pregnant, but it was just a ball of cheese… a ball of cheese in my stomach," she jokingly says.

"Seriously, I looked so fat. But you know what? That happens to people. Everybody gets bloated. I'm not bloated today but this is pre-pancake. I'm about to go eat a pancake."

The John Wick star then jokes about the effects of eating carbs, saying, "After I eat any kind of carb, I just blow up… So that's the news of the day. Not pregnant, just eating a lot of cheese, a lot of wine, lot of pancakes.
