Romelu Lukaku fit to play, confirms Jose Mourinho

The 24-year-old is fit to take part in United’s FA Cup tie against Derby County!

SNS | New Delhi |

Manchester United have been handed a massive injury boost ahead of their FA Cup tie with Derby County as manager Jose Mourinho revealed that striker Romelu Lukaku has recovered ahead of time to face the Championship side on Friday night.

“Romelu is back, Romelu is back,” Mourinho told MUTV on Thursday.

Don’t miss: 5 players Chelsea could lose in January

Lukaku had been involved in a sickening, albeit accidental clash of heads with Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt early on in their Premier League clash on Saturday and had to be stretchered off with oxygen support.

It appears the injury wasn’t as bad as previously thought for Mourinho had stated he expected his summer signing to return to action after a week’s rest, expecting to welcome him back for a January 15 Premier League clash with Stoke City, not earlier.

“As I said it was not a concussion, it was a precaution, a protection for him. He wanted to play against Everton, but this time he is back,” Mourinho added.

After signing for United from Everton on a £75 million transfer in the summer, Lukaku has scored a total of 14 goals to emerge as the club’s top scorer.

And while United made do without the 24-year-old Belgian when they travelled to his former club for a mid-week Premier League clash on Monday night, with Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard netting in a 2-0 win, his long-term absence would have seen the Red Devils struggle to cope.

Especially with Zlatan Ibrahimovic sidelined for a month at least, United were a bit short of options up front and as they seek to avoid an upset against the Rams, the return of Lukaku bodes well for United.

Currently United are in three competitions (Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup) and while a treble is unrealistic, the Red Devils are expected to make a deep run in both the cups they are still in.

Dell XPS 13 with new design, Intel 8th Gen processors and 20 hour battery life launched

Dell XPS 13 is the world’s first laptop built with “GORE Thermal Insulation”.

IANS |

Dell on Thursday announced a redesigned and more powerful XPS 13 laptop that will be available globally, starting at $999.99.

Activated by voice, touch or facial recognition, the new XPS 13 comes with narrower bezels, a new cooling system and white and rose gold options with a stain-resistant coating.

XPS 13 is the world’s first laptop built with “GORE Thermal Insulation”, the same silica aerogels that have been used in high-tech science and extreme engineering environments to diffuse and dissipate heat.

“If you get a pen mark or other stain on the white interior you can just wipe it off. And with a heat resistance superior to metal, woven glass fiber also stays cooler to facilitate longer performance,” Frank Azor, Vice President and GM, XPS, Alienware and Dell Gaming, said in a blog post.

The device houses quad-core eighth-generation Intel processor and is available with an FHD non-touch or 4K touch display.

It has Intel UHD Graphics 620 and supports up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB PCIe SSD.

“Log in with a look or a touch with the infrared camera and optional fingerprint reader in the power button for Windows Hello, or talk to your device from across the room, with four integrated digital microphones and Cortana voice recognition,” Azor added.

The 13-inch laptop, first unveiled at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is 30 per cent (3.4mm) thinner as well as lighter, starting at just 2.7 pounds.

Powered by the latest Intel 8th Generation Quad Core processor, XPS 13 delivers superior mobile performance with fast booting SSDs up to 1TB.

“While we made the system smaller and lighter, we were able to increase the performance by 2x, over the original XPS 13 launched in 2015,” Azor said.

Andy Murray withdraws from Australian Open

IANS | Madrid |

Five-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray on Thursday said he would head home after pulling out of the first tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year due to an ongoing hip problem that has kept the former World No.1 from competitions since mid-way through last year.

The lingering injury forced the British player, now ranked 16th, to withdraw from Brisbane International on Tuesday, cancelling his match against Ryan Harrison of the United States, reports Efe.

“Sadly, I won’t be playing in Melbourne this year, as I am not yet ready to compete,” said Murray.

Murray, who is considering surgery on his hip, played his last official match in July, when he lost to Sam Querrey of the US, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-1 at the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

“I’ll be flying home shortly to assess all the options but I appreciate all the messages of support and I hope to be back playing soon,” the 30-year-old Scot stated.

Meanwhile, Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said Murray had been suffering with his hip, wishing him, “the absolute best on his road to recovery.”

Earlier in the day, Japan’s Kei Nishikori announced he would miss the Australian Open because of a right wrist injury.

India have not won against the Proteas on South African soil since 1992 — losing four and drawing one in 2010-11.

IANS | Cape Town |

After registering nine consecutive Test series victories since 2015, India will be duly tested in overseas conditions when they aim to overcome a formidable South Africa in the first of three match series at the Newlands here on Friday.

India maintained their Test series winning streak since defeating Sri Lanka 2-1 in their away series. The top ranked side in the longest format had also defeated South Africa on their own turf in the 2015-16 Freedom Trophy series.

Key Indian batsmen Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Murali Vijay and Lokesh Rahul will only look to add depth to the batting department.

Skipper Kohli might opt to play an extra batsman — Rohit Sharma — in place of Ravindra Jadeja, who is down with flu.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah — who received his maiden call up in Test squad — alongside Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be tested against the fearsome South African batting on the green-top wicket.

Second ranked Test side South Africa, on the other hand will look to flourish on their home conditions under the likes of batsmen Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.

The well set-up bowling department will be led by pacer Kagiso Rabada — who ranks second in the Test bowlers list alongside fit again Dale Steyn, right-armer Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander who will target to dismiss the visitors right from the start of the match.

Supreme Court notice to Centre, states on anti-sexual harassment law

IANS | New Delhi |

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a notice to the central and state governments and union territory administrations on a plea seeking proper implementation of a 2013 law to prevent and prohibit sexual harassment of women at workplaces.

The bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, issued notice on a public interest litigation by NGO Initiatives for Inclusion Foundation seeking implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, Redressal) Act, 2013.

Senior lawyer Sanjay Parikh, who appeared for the NGO represented by its trustees Pallavi Pareek and Esha Shekhar, told the court that the mechanism provided under the law for curbing sexual harassment at workplaces has not been created entirely.

The entire edifice that is required to enforce the law includes internal complaint committee in each organisation be it a government body or a private entity, setting up of local complaint committee (LCC), designation of a District Magistrate as a district officer to exercise powers under the Act, and the appointment of nodal officers, he said.

The 2013 Act provides for the appointment of nodal officers in every block, taluka and tehsil in rural or tribal areas and ward or municipality in urban areas, to receive complaints and forward the same to the LCC concerned.

Parikh said that though four years have passed since Parliament passed the Bill, the entire structure that has to operationalise it remains non-functional.
