TN governor addresses assembly, DMK boycotts

PTI | Chennai |

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday made his maiden address to the state assembly even as the main opposition DMK along with its allies walked out of the House boycotting his speech.

Soon after he arrived, Purohit greeted all members of the House with a ‘Vanakkam’ and began his address.

Even as he began his speech, Leader of the Opposition MK Stalin was on his feet trying to raise some issues.

The governor paused for a moment and told Stalin ‘please ukkarunga’ (please take your seat) in Tamil but to no avail.

Stalin was supported by his party MLAs, who raised slogans demanding that their leader be allowed to speak.

A little later, the DMK Working President led his party members and staged a walkout.

Congress members and the lone IUML legislator also followed suit.

The Governor then continued his address.

Amid noisy scenes, sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, who made his debut in the assembly after having won the December 21 RK Nagar bypoll by a thumping margin of 40,000 votes against E Madhusudhanan of AIADMK, was seated calmly.

Sri Lanka Cricket gives Hathurusinghe selector’s job on tour

He said the SLC executive committee had adopted the move at the extraordinary general meeting.

IANS | Colombo |

New national coach Chandika Hathurusinghe has been assigned the role of selector on tour as part of a plan to give him more say in team selections, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumathipala said today.

He said the SLC executive committee had adopted the move at the extraordinary general meeting.

Sri Lanka’s sports law of 1973, though, does not permit the coach to be a national selector.

“He will be able to pick the final eleven while on tour with the manager of the team and the captain also acting as co-selectors,” Sumathipala said.

However, the coach will not be able to serve in the national selection committee when the squads are picked.

With the new arrangements, Sumathipala said it would not be necessary for selectors to travel with the team.

In 2017 Sri Lanka lost 40 of their international games across all formats out of a total of 57.

Sumathipala also announced the appointment of Roshan Biyanwela, a Sri Lanka Airforce ranker, as the new secretary of the SLC.

Saudi Arabia gives nod for Haj pilgrimage by sea route

SNS | New Delhi |

Saudi Arabia has agreed to India’s proposal to revive the option of Haj pilgrimage through sea route, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Monday adding that the service will begin soon.

The minister made the announcement shortly after signing the bilateral annual Haj 2018 agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Haj and Umrah Minister, Mohammad Benten at Makkah.

“Saudi Arabia has given green signal for India’s decision to revive option of Haj pilgrimage through sea route also & officials from both countries will discuss on all formalities & technicalities so that Haj through sea route can be re-started in coming yrs,” he tweeted.

“Sending Haj pilgrims through ships will help cut down travel expenses significantly. It will be a revolutionary, pro-poor, pilgrim-friendly decision,” he said.

As per reports, the journey via sea from cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Cochi will cut down travel expenses by almost half as compared to air travel.

An economy class ticket for the around five-hour flight between Mumbai and Jeddah costs between Rs.25,000 and Rs.52,000 (without subsidy) while from Delhi, the ticket price varies from Rs.18,000 to Rs.61,000 per head.

The minister further informed that the practice of ferrying Haj pilgrims between Mumbai and Jeddah by waterways was stopped in 1995.

As the ship which would transport the pilgrims, MV Akbari grew old, the practice was scrapped.

Talking about Muslim women who would perform the Haj without a male companion, Naqvi said separate accommodation and transport will be arranged for such pilgrims along with female Haj assistants.

The option to send pilgrims by sea route is being weighed in the wake of a 2012 Supreme Court verdict asking the Union government to abolish by 2022 the subsidy offered to Haj pilgrims who travel by air.

Juventus’ Blaise Matuidi claims racial abuse

Matuidi was seen complaining to the referee during the second half as he won a corner for the visitors on Saturday.

IANS | Turin |

Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi has claimed that he was a victim of racial abuse during their 1-0 Serie A away win against Cagliari.

Matuidi was seen complaining to the referee during the second half as he won a corner for the visitors on Saturday.

“Today I experienced racism during the match. Weak people try to intimidate with hate. I am not a hater and can only be sorry for those who set bad examples,” the 30-year-old French international wrote on Facebook.

“Football is a way to spread equality, passion and inspiration and this is what I am here for. Peace. Juventus #equalgame,” the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star added.

Penelope Cruz doesn’t own a TV

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actress Penelope Cruz doesn’t have a TV in her house because she doesn’t want her children to grow up in front of the screen.

She said: “It worries me when I see a group of children who are 11 or 12 together (on their phones) and they don’t talk to each other, they don’t look each other in the eyes.”

“I worry for the future generations of children that spend hours every day on video games or television or they are given a phone at 11 or access to the internet and no control of the time of using it.”

“In my house, there is no TV. There are no video games. I just want (my kids) to experience nature, to experience a rhythm that is healthier for the development of children. But that’s just my way of doing,” added Cruz.

However, that doesn’t mean she stops her children viewing anything or ever using electronic devices such as iPads, reports femalefirst.com.

“I think you have to be so careful with any child. Their brains are forming. They are not supposed to see material they are not ready to digest yet but I don’t have anything against a few minutes of a cartoon that is age appropriate,” she said.

The 43-year-old says she has always been a worrier, but her fears have changed since she had children — Luna Encinas Cruz, 4, and Leo Encinas Cruz, 6.

“When you become a mother, you worry about different things, but it’s a substitution of worries,” she said.

Bannon regrets slamming Donald Trump family in new book

IANS | Washington |

Former White House official Steve Bannon has said he regretted for the comments attributed to him that were critical of President Donald Trump’s family in a new book, media reports said.

The former chief strategist was widely lambasted by members of the Trump administration for his participation in the newly released book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House”, which was written by Michael Wolff, reports ABC News.

In it, Bannon was quoted as saying that the President’s son participated in a “treasonous” meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised dirt on Hillary Clinton in 2016.

“Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man,” Bannon said in a statement on Sunday.

“He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around.

“I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr. has diverted attention from the president’s historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency,” he added.

Excerpts from the book caused a political firestorm last week.

Bannon zeroed in on the Donald Trump, Jr. for the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with the Russians which was also attended the President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and onetime campaign chief Paul Manafort.

“They’re going to crack Don Junior like a egg on national TV,” he said, referring to the ongoing investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“The chance that Don Jr. did not walk these jumos up to his father’s office on the twenty-sixth floor is zero,” he was also quoted as having said in the book.

The White House has lashed out against Wolff and the book, calling it a “work of fiction”, ABC News reported.

Trump also expressed outrage over Bannon’s participation in it, calling his former aide “Sloppy Steve” and a “staffer who worked for me”.

“I guess sloppy Steve brought him into the White House quite a bit, and it was one of those things. That’s why sloppy Steve is now looking for a job,” Trump tweeted on Sunday.

The President also distanced himself from Bannon last week.

“Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency… When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

Bannon had managed to stay in Trump’s orbit before earning his ire, reports Politico news.

Although he was fired in August, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said recently that Trump and Bannon spoke in December.

Antonio Conte dubs Jose Mourinho as ‘little man’

Mourinho had earlier said that he had never been, and will never be, suspended for match-fixing, in a snide reference to Conte.

IANS | London |

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte hit out at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and tagged him as a ‘little man’ following initial remarks against him by the Portuguese.

Mourinho had earlier said that he had never been, and will never be, suspended for match-fixing, in a snide reference to Conte.

“I think before you make this type of comment, before to hurt another person, you must pay great attention,” Conte was quoted as saying by The Guardian on Saturday.

“You show you are a little man. A little man. You don’t know very well (what) is the situation. But I know him very well in the past. In the past he was a little man in many circumstances, is a little man in the present and for sure he will be a little man in the future,” the 48-year-old added.

Conte, who took charge of Chelsea in 2016 and helped the London club clinch the English Premier League (EPL) title in his debut season, claimed Mourinho has low standards and advised him to change his behaviour.

Robbie has not heard anything on Wolves move: Sheringham

A Sunil Chhetri first-half goal ended ATK’s three-match unbeaten run at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here. They are seventh in the points table now.

IANS |

ATK coach Teddy Sheringham on Sunday expressed hope that marquee footballer Robbie Keane will stay on for the rest of the Indian Super League (ISL) season, turning a blind eye to rumours of the Irishman leaving for English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I have heard the speculation as well but I presume that’s what it is, speculation. Robbie hasn’t heard anything or he hadn’t the last time I spoke to him,” Sheringham told reporters at the post-match press conference.

A Sunil Chhetri first-half goal ended ATK’s three-match unbeaten run at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here. They are seventh in the points table now.

“We want to keep Robbie here. He is a fantastic player and great leader for the team. I want him to be there,” Sheringham added.

The game was overshadowed by reports that Keane has courted interest from his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers — where he shot to stardom. Wolves are eyeing promotion to the English Premier League from England’s second division — the Championship.

On the team’s performance, the former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur star said: “We were sloppy in every department. We gifted them the goal and we weren’t at our best.”

The visitors lost possession in midfield with Conor Thomas gifting a pass to Chhetri who pounced on the loose ball and struck a powerful shot into the far corner.

“He is an outstanding player. Since that time (before the goal) he was not playing so good but suddenly he appeared and scored a goal like that,” Bengaluru FC coach Albert Roca said after the match. The Spanish coach dedicated his goal to his mother who was celebrating her birthday on Sunday.

“We were not brilliant but were enough to win a game. Kolkata did not have so many chances,” Roca added.

Barcelona to unveil $192 million man Philippe Coutinho today

“Barca fans, I’m here now. It’s a dream come true! I hope to see you tomorrow (Monday).”

AFP | Barcelona |

Philippe Coutinho has described his €160 million ($192 million) move to Barcelona as “a dream come true” with coach Ernesto Valverde predicting the Brazilian will comfortably fit into a team already containing global superstar Lionel Messi.

The 25-year-old playmaker, the world’s third most expensive footballer after securing a long-desired transfer from Liverpool, will be officially presented to the world’s media on Monday from 1130 GMT.

But in a club video message released on Sunday, Coutinho, who posed for photographers at the Camp Nou wearing a tracksuit top in the colours of the team, insisted: “I want to play, win trophies and make the supporters happy. Those are my objectives.

“Barca fans, I’m here now. It’s a dream come true! I hope to see you tomorrow (Monday).”

Coutinho has agreed a deal through to 2023 and is looking forward to playing alongside Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta.

He described them as well as club stalwarts Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets as “idols”.

Coutinho has already played alongside Suarez for 18 months at Liverpool before the Uruguayan made the same move to Spain in 2014.

“Everybody knows about his quality. He has been playing at the highest level for years now and that is important,” said Suarez.

“Now we need to make sure he feels at home because we know that changing club is always difficult, but I think he is the type of player who will fit well into the team.”

Valverde admitted that it will be a challenge shoehorning his new recruit into a squad which is running away with the Spanish league title.

“Coutinho is a player who I think can bring a lot to us,” said Valverde. “He’s an important signing.”

“I have seen him play in various positions — on the right, the left, in the middle, on the wings. We will evaluate all of this…but, of course, I don’t think he will play as a goalkeeper!”

The swoop for Coutinho — which contains a €400 million release clause — is the third biggest transfer in football history.

It is outranked only by Paris Saint-Germain’s world record €222 million signing of Neymar from Barcelona last year, and PSG’s capture of French striker Kylian Mbappe for a deal that will eventually be worth €180 million.

Rio-born Coutinho arrived at Liverpool from Inter Milan for a mere £8.5 million (€11.5 million) in January 2013 and scored 54 goals for the club in all competitions, although he won no silverware during his five-year stay at Anfield.

Barcelona had tried to sign Coutinho last summer and his departure is a blow to Liverpool as he had just returned to top form after an injury-hit start to the season, scoring seven goals in the last eight games of 2017 to put his side firmly in the Champions League places.

“It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

“Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen.”

For Barcelona, Coutinho’s signing allows the club to move on from the bitter experience of losing his Brazil teammate Neymar to Qatar-backed PSG.

Coutinho’s age is also highly attractive to Barca with Messi, Suarez and Iniesta all in their thirties.

Liverpool have been tipped to quickly reinvest their windfall from the Coutinho sale.

Despite already paying Southampton €85 million($102 million) for defender Virgil van Dijk, Klopp will be chasing an attacker with Leicester City’s Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez and Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar already linked with a switch to Anfield.

Man arrested from Mathura not terrorist: UP Police

IANS | Lucknow |

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday said a person detained in Mathura on suspicion of being a terrorist has turned out to be a bonafide resident of Jammu and Kashmir.

Inspector General of Police (IG) Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) Aseem Arun said: “As of now no terror link has been established.”

The person in question, Bilal Ahmad Rani, was detained on Sunday after he was caught travelling without a ticket on board the New Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi Express.

Rani was behaving suspiciously and had to be taken for interrogation, Arun said. During which it was established that Rani was “a bonafide resident of Anantnag where his family runs a medical store”.

The details of two other Kashmiris living with Rani in a Delhi hotel were also confirmed. They are also residents of Jammu and Kashmir. But they might face some more questioning, an officer said

Apple urged to shield kids from iPhone addiction

IANS | San Francisco |

Two key Apple shareholders have requested the Cupertino-based iPhone maker to take urgent steps to safeguard young users from the ill-effects of iPhone addiction.

In a letter, Apple shareholders Jana Partners and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, who according to a Wall Street Journal report together control about $2 billion worth of Apple shares, told the company to make its products safer for the younger users in the US.

“We have reviewed the evidence and we believe there is a clear need for Apple to offer parents more choices and tools to help them ensure that young consumers are using your products in an optimal manner,” the letter read.

Citing latest research into depression linked to smartphone use among students, the letter urged Apple to invest in further research towards handling this issue.

Enhancing mobile device software so that parents (if they wish) can implement changes so that their child or teenager is not being handed the same phone as a 40-year old, is one of the suggestion.

The letter proposes modifying initial setup on an iPhone to let parents set an age and appropriate limits on screen time and social media that their kids can access.

Likewise, parents could be given options to monitor how an iPhone is used.

“Explaining to parents why Apple is offering additional choices and the research that went into them, to help parents make more informed decisions” is another suggestion made to the company.

Apple can also hire or assign a high-level executive to monitor this and “issue annual progress reports just as Apple does for environmental and supply chain issues”.

She donned a chic outfit made up of sharp white blazer and black trousers. She finished off the look with a small black handbag and comfortable black flats.

It’s the first time Watson has undergone such a dramatic hair transformation. She last sported a different hairdo – a pixie cut, in 2010.

Oprah Winfrey makes rousing speech at Golden Globes

IANS | Los Angeles |

As Oprah Winfrey became the first black woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 75th Golden Globe Awards here on Sunday, she called for — in a powerful acceptance speech — a world free of sexual abusers where nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.

Winfrey’s inspirational and moving speech, which drew a standing ovation from the Who’s Who of Hollywood, saw her talk about people speaking out the truth and fighting for justice.

“Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories,” she said in reference to the slew of sexual abuse allegations against men in and outside Hollywood.

Stressing that it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry, Winfrey, 63, said: “It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.

“They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military.”

Winfrey took the audience through the story of the late Recy Taylor, a woman who in 1944 was kidnapped and raped, but never got justice.

“Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up,” Winfrey said, her voice exuding the confidence which sets her apart.

Dressed in an all-black number — expressing support to the silent protest against sexual predators — the world-famous talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist said she has attempted through her career “to say something about how men and women really behave”.

“To say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere, and how we overcome. I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our darkest nights.

“So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”

Winfrey had begun her speech by reminiscing about being a young girl in 1964, watching Sidney Poitier become the first black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.

“I’d never seen a black man being celebrated like that,” Winfrey said of the moment in 1982.

“It is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award.”

Australia rout England by an innings to win Ashes 4-0

England finished at 180 for nine off 88.1 overs as Australia won by an innings and 123 runs.

IANS | Sydney |

Australia ruthlessly extinguished England’s resistance to claim an innings victory in the fifth Ashes Test and complete a 4-0 series rout on the final day in Sydney on Monday.

The beleaguered tourists, with skipper Joe Root weakened by a stomach bug and unable to continue batting, dissolved after lunch, losing their last four wickets for their fourth comprehensive defeat of the series.

“It has been a great couple of months. The cricket that we have played in the last couple of months has been outstanding,” Australia skipper Steve Smith said.

“We have just been able to get on top and win those key moments and not let them back in the game which is crucial.”

Pat Cummins led the Australian offensive in Sydney with four wickets for 39 to finish man-of-the-match and the leading wicket taker in the series with 23.

“To get through the five Tests and end the series here at home. I couldn’t asked for much more,” said an ecstatic Cummins.

England finished at 180 for nine off 88.1 overs as Australia won by an innings and 123 runs.

It followed comprehensive losses on the troubled five- Test tour in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The fourth Test was drawn in Melbourne.

Stricken Root did not come out to bat after lunch as he continued to experience discomfort after his overnight stomach bug.

“He is asleep. He has a gastro bug and he has not been too well through the night and the heat yesterday didn’t help.

He is asleep in the dressing-room trying to recover,” said vice-captain Jimmy Anderson, deputising for Root at the post- match presentations.

“To be honest we have been outplayed in the key moments of each game,” he added.

“We have been in the games to an extent but just not been able to capitalise on any opportunities. Australia have played great in this series.”

– Chances disappear –

=====================

Cummins struck twice in three balls after lunch, trapping Jonny Bairstow leg before wicket for 38 and having Stuart Broad caught behind off a brutish bouncer for four.

Mason Crane got another Cummins bouncer which he gloved to wicketkeeper Tim Paine for two and Anderson was caught behind off Josh Hazlewood for two to end the innings.

Root went to hospital overnight with England Cricket initially saying he had “severe dehydration” after fielding and batting in intense heat on Sunday.

But team officials corrected earlier statements and said Root was instead weakened by the effects of a gastroenteritis bug.

He came out to bat on the dismissal of Moeen Ali for 13 an hour into the final day’s play and reached his fifth half- century of the series, but was unable to convert any of them to a century.

England’s remote chances of saving the Test disappeared when Root failed to appear at the crease after lunch.

Spinner Nathan Lyon claimed Moeen’s wicket for the seventh time in the series when he trapped him leg before in the morning session, which Moeen did not review.

Lyon took three wickets for 54 off 35 overs.

The Australians took a grip on the final Test with a massive 303-run innings lead and then reduced the battle-weary tourists to 93 for four at the close on the fourth day.

All five Tests went into the fifth day.
