China is powerful but India is not a weak nation: Army Chief Bipin Rawat

PTI | New Delhi |

Army chief General Bipin Rawat today said India will not allow its territory to be invaded by anyone, asserting that China may be a powerful country but India is not a weak nation either.

The time had come for India to shift focus to its northern border, he said, and added that the country was capable of handling China’s assertiveness along it.

Amid aggressive Chinese efforts to increase its influence in the region, the Army chief said India cannot allow its neighbours to drift away to China.

“China is a powerful country but we are not a weak nation,” General  Rawat told reporters here.

To a question about Chinese incursions into India, he said, “We will not allow our territory to be invaded by anyone.”

Referring to the US warnings to Pakistan over its handling of terrorism, General Rawat said India will have to wait and see its impact.

Terrorists are a disposable commodity in Pakistan and the Indian Army approach has been to ensure that it feels the pain, he said.

Centre’s interference in judiciary is dangerous for democracy: Mamata

SNS | New Delhi |

After four top judges of the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday said that the administration in the apex court was not in order and criticised Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra for not taking any remedial steps, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter saying “extreme interference of Central Government with Judiciary is dangerous for democracy”.

Banerjee, in a series of Tweets, said, “We are deeply anguished with the developments today about the Supreme Court”, while addding that judiciary and media are the pillars of democracy.

Earlier in the day, Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurien Joseph addressed the media in New Delhi and said that they were discharging their debt to the nation by exposing the follies in the judiciary.

“This is an extraordinary event and we are forced to go public… Administration of SC is not in order… As senior members of the court, we thought we hold responsibility to the nation and to the institution,” said Justice Chelameswar while interacting with the media at his residence.

“We met CJI with a specific request which unfortunately couldn’t convince him that we were right therefore, we were left with no choice except to communicate it to the nation that please take care of the institution,” he added.

“We don’t want people to say 20 years later that we did not take care of the institution,” he said further.

On being asked about issues, Justice Chelameswar said that assignment of cases was one of the issue.

Meanwhile, Justice Gogoi clarified that nobody was “breaking the rank” and the judges were just discharging their debt to nation.

“Nobody is breaking the rank and it is discharge of debt to nation which we have done,” Justice Gogoi said.

India vs South Africa: Sourav Ganguly backs five-bowler strategy for 2nd Test

“Virat Kohli should not worry about such things [team combination],” Ganguly said.

SNS |

India’s team combination in the opening Test match had come under heavy criticism after India lost the first Test match of three-match series to South Africa by 72 runs.

Currently, Proteas are dominating the series with 1-0 and if Virat’s side wants to be the first one to win a Test series in South Africa, they need to plan a strategy to win the remaining matches.

Virat Kohli was slammed for opting Rohit Sharma and benching Ajinkya Rahane in Newlands. There was also discussion that KL Rahul should be back in the playing eleven and India need to play only four bowlers.

However, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly beg to differ and believes that Virat should have faith in his current batting line up.  While writing in a column for TOI,  Ganguly suggested that Virat should go with the first Test squad in Centurion.

“Virat Kohli should not worry about such things [team combination],” Ganguly said.

“Although KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane have a good history of scoring runs away from the sub-continent and have better records as batsmen, India can’t just chop-and-change in every game. They have shown faith in the current batting and that should continue in the next Test as well. They still have two more Tests to play and I feel all the matches will produce results,” Ganguly added.

The veteran Indian cricketer also believes that going with five bowlers was the right thing.

“There has been a lot of talk about the combination. India did the right thing by going in with five bowlers. As much as scoring runs is important in a bid to win Test matches, getting wickets is also key. The reason why we were thinking of an Indian win at some point is because the bowlers got 20 wickets and that will continue to be an important criterion over the next two Tests,” Ganguly wrote.

Stones hurled at Nitish Kumar’s cavalcade; CM safe

PTI | Buxar (Bihar) |

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cavalcade was on Friday pelted with stones while he was on his way to a village as part of the state-wide Vikas Samiksha Yatra.

The chief minister was unharmed.

An unfazed Kumar, who went on to address a public meeting in Dumraon block, said, “Some people feel disturbed over my commitment to progress of the state. They try to mislead and provoke others but people should not get perturbed over such minor happenings”.

An official accompanying the chief minister told PTI over phone that some people had hurled stones at the cavalcade but it did not hamper the movement of the carcade.

He said the cavalcade moved ahead for the village where the chief minister launched 168 schemes worth Rs 272 crore before addressing public meeting.

It was not immediately known who were the persons who indulged in stone-pelting and what was their grouse.

The chief minister said, “My purpose is not to run government from the state capital but to assess ground realities and progress of development schemes so that basic amenities like roads, clean water and power reach every village, in fact, every locality, in the state. If anybody is trying to mislead people about my mission, the reality will speak for itself and the mission would never get derailed”.

He also spoke at length about his mission of ban on sale and consumption of alcohol and the drive against dowry and child marriage as also measures being taken by the government for skill development of the youths so that they got better job opportunities.

The CM told security personnel deployed at the venue of the public meeting “do not worry about any protests. If some people want to raise slogans and show black flags.”

Kumar has been criss-crossing the state as part of “Vikas Samiksha Yatra” to take stock of implementation of developmental programmes at the grassroot.

India ad spend to grow by 12.5 per cent in 2018: Dentsu Aegis report

PTI | Mumbai |

The advertising spend in the country is expected to grow by 12.5 per cent in 2018 from 9.6 per cent last year, according to the Dentsu Aegis ad spend report.

“2018 is expected to be a growth year considering the stabilisation post GST. Another growth driver would be the fiscal policies of the government, which are expected to be pro-spending and supporting the middle income groups,” Dentsu Aegis Network India President Media Brands and Amplifi Kartik Iyer said.

Digital media spend is forecast to increase by 30 per cent in 2018 with 43.6 per cent growth in mobile spend, which will account for 47 per cent of total digital spend in 2018.

“In India, the significant improvement in availability of high-speed networks at a lower cost is making a huge impact in the efficiency metrics of digital media. This will continue and therefore will support the faster growth of digital advertising,” Iyer added.

The advertising market in India is further expected to grow by 12.5 per cent in 2019, the report said.

The global ad spends, which includes 59 countries, is expected to grow at 3.6 per cent in 2018 from 3.1 per cent in 2017. “This amounts to a global ad spend of USD 589.5 billion in 2018. Events such as the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the FIFA World Cup in Russia and US Congressional elections will help to drive this growth,” it said.

Asia Pacific ad spend growth is estimated to grow over 4.2 per cent in 2018, up from 3.5 per cent in 2017.

“The region is forecast to be the leading contributor to global ad spend growth in 2018, contributing 39.7 per cent, USD 8.1 billion of the total USD 20.3 billion incremental global increase, led by China, Japan, India and the Philippines,” it said

Globally, digital ad spends are expected to overtake television, with a growth of 12.6 per cent.

“Digital continues to power ad spend growth and is forecast to grow globally by 12.6 per cent in 2018, versus 15 per cent in 2017, amounting to USD 220.3 billion. 2018 will be the year that digital overtakes TV, exceeding even our own previous forecasts. Digital ad spend will account for a 38.3 per cent share of total ad spend in 2018, overtaking TV at 35.5 per cent,” it said.

Video and social will be the main drivers of growth within digital ad spend in 2018, powered by smartphone take-up and mobile-video in particular, it added.

Sri Lanka lifts ban on women buying, selling alcohol

AP | Colombo |

Sri Lanka has revoked a 38-year ban on selling alcohol to women and employing them in places where the brews are produced and sold.

The finance ministry says Minister Mangala Samaraweera signed the notification revoking the ban to restore gender equality and promote tourism.

The ban had been in force since 1979, the early years of Sri Lanka embracing an open market economy. But many businesses had employed women to sell and serve alcohol and sold alcohol to them in spite of the ban.

The government also allowed liquor outlets to stay open an hour later, until 10 p.m.

Ind vs SA, 2nd Test: Virat needs to bring Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul in playing eleven

So what exactly Virat Kohli needs to do to avoid the series defeat?

Sneha Singh |

India has lost five, while drawn one Test series, out of the six that they have played against the Proteas in South Africa. That’s why when the Indian team for the three-match Test series against South Africa tour was announced, cricket experts believed that this team had the potential to do what no other Indian side had done so far.

Even the stats of 2017 favoured the Indian side, as Virat Kohli’s boys had won nine consecutive Test matches, a record that they share with Australia. So what exactly went wrong? Why was the in-form Indian batting line not able to chase a mediocre target of 209 runs?

In both the innings of the opening Test match of three-match series, Virat’s side collapsed and other than Hardik Pandya’s heroics in the second session of the second day’s play, no other Indian batter was able to leave a mark on the South African pacers.

In the first Test, many questionable decisions were made, including the inclusion of Rohit Sharma over Test specialist Ajinkya Rahane, whose stats (53.44) outside India speaks volumes of his calibre. However, in the post-match press conference, Virat defended his decision, saying they preferred Sharma over Rahane because of their recent form.

The way Indian side collapsed, it only showed that they lacked experience. In the first match that lasted three days, the hosts were victorious even though they were dismissed for just 130 runs in the second innings.

The way India lost charge in the first Test, people were shocked and for a moment viewers questioned whether this was the same team that held the top spot in the ICC Test rankings. When India landed in the rainbow nation, they said they were ready to be the first to write history.  But the way they batted in the first Test, leaves a big question mark on their batting abilities on bouncy tracks. If the Indian batsman failed on the Newlands pitch, it would be even more difficult to handle the more lively and bouncy pitch of Centurion. It seems, Virat Kohli’s boys, who had played their last 31 Tests in the slowest pitch of Asia, are not prepared for the pace and bounce that South African pitch offers to the bowlers.

So what exactly Virat Kohli needs to do to avoid the series defeat?

They definitely need to bring back Test specialist Ajinkya Rahane back in playing eleven and KL Rahul in the squad. If Virat’s side want to be in the series, they need to balance their batting order so that KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma can be in the playing eleven. They need to score runs even in the difficult situation and most importantly they need to stop South Africa from making big targets.

Djokovic dealt tough Australian Open draw as he plans tennis comeback

Djokovic could potentially encounter Roger Federer in the semi-finals.

IANS | Melbourne |

Former World No.1 Novak Djokovic faces a brutal challenge if he is to win the Australian Open in his comeback to tennis.

Djokovic, 30, enters the 2018 Australian Open as the 14th seed, the first time he has been ranked outside the top 10 at the year’s first Grand Slam in a decade, after missing much of 2017 with an elbow injury, reports Xinhua news agency.

His hopes for a triumphant return at Melbourne Park were dealt a blow at the Australian Open draw on Thursday night with the Serbian set to face former top-10 player Gael Monfils in the second round before running into fourth seed Aleander Zverev and 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka.

Even if the six-time Australian Open champion should clear all those hurdles he could encounter 2017 champion Roger Federer in the semifinals.

Federer, who turned back the clock to win two Grand Slams in 2017 after a five-year drought, on Thursday night described the season as “unbelievable”.

“I don’t usually like going to draws, I just want to see the sheet. But what a pleasure to be here on Margaret Court Arena. Last year was an amazing final and it’s great to be back,” he said.

A string of local hopes were also dealt difficult draws; 17-year-old Destanee Aiava will face world number one Simona Halep while fellow teenager Alex De Minaur, who has made the semi-finals at both the Brisbane and Sydney Internationals, will play Tomas Berdych.

Berdych, the 17th seed, has never lost to an Australian at a Grand Slam in seven matches.

“He’s a very talented player. Has a very high level. I’m just going to go out there, try to weather the storm, and try to play my game,” De Minaur said.

Seeded women in the tournament were lucky to avoid the threat of Maria Sharapova who is ranked 47th in the world after serving a doping suspension in 2017.

China’s Zhang Shuai was not as lucky, drawing 2017 US Open Champ Sloane Stephens as she attempts to recreate the success of 2016 when she made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

Peng Shuai, China’s highest ranked tennis player, was drawn against a qualifier.

Thailand seizes large elephant tusks worth over USD 450,000

AP | Bangkok |

Thai authorities have seized 148 kilograms (326 pounds) of African elephant ivory, including three large tusks, worth around 15 million baht ( 469,800) from a Bangkok airport.

Police say the haul from Nigeria consisted of the tusks and 31 tusk fragments and was seized last Friday after the cargo was flagged by officials. Police say the tusks were destined for China where there is a large demand for ivory.

A Customs Department statement says the seized ivory will be impounded as police widen investigations to identify suspects involved in the smuggling.

Once a haven for smuggled ivory, Thailand has introduced new laws and amendments in 2014 and 2015 to regulate domestic ivory markets and criminalize the sale of African elephant ivory.

Minister asks saffron growers of Kashmir to return to traditional system as the Rs.400 crore NSM has failed

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu has asked the saffron growers of Kashmir to return to the traditional system of cultivation as the Rs.400 crore National Saffron Mission (NSM) launched by the centre to boost its production in the valley has failed to achieve the desired results.

The minister said that the saffron sector this year has suffered the worst ever crop failure.

Official confirmation of failure of the ambitious project was given by Drabu in his budget proposals that he laid in the legislature on Thursday.

Drabu, in his budget speech, said “the NSM does not seem to have achieved the desired results. Indeed, despite enormous amounts of money being spent on creation of irrigation infrastructure for saffron, the sector saw its worst ever crop failures this year”.

Instead of depending on the NSM, Drabu announced an initiative to encourage saffron growers to return to the traditional system of cultivation. He earmarked a sum of Rs.5 crore for launching a community based marketing network.

However, the Finance Minister was silent on the issue of ordering a CBI or Vigilance probe into misuse of huge amount of grants by officials implementing the NSM.

A group of saffron growers from the valley came here earlier this week to narrate their woes before the authorities and failure of the NSM that has badly hit the production in its traditional area of Pampore near Srinagar.

Kashmir saffron has ruled the market over the years but was now facing neglect of the authorities.

The Rs.400 crore NSM launched by the centre in 2010 to boost saffron cultivation has failed to yield the desired results although the 5 years project was extended by another 2 years in October 2015.

The report card of the project is dismal if one goes by the complaints of the saffron cultivators. However, officials connected with the Mission claim its success.

The NSM was launched in 2010 with an outlay of Rs.371 crore but it was later in 2015 enhanced to Rs.400 crore and it’s timeframe extended by two years that has lapsed two months ago.

What was worrying was that instead of rejuvenating saffron cultivation in Kashmir, the total area under saffron cultivation had declined to about 3700 hectares from the 5700 hectares in 1996.

Change of land-use in the saffron growing areas was reportedly being done with impunity as land prices particularly in South Kashmirthe have considerably increased.

Those sticking to saffron cultivation are hit hard by the climate as they depend on rains. The recent dryspell has come as spoilsport and in 2014 the floods played havoc in the valley.

To meet the problem of dry spells, captive irrigation facility was one of the main components of NSM as the saffron growers generally depend on rains. The NSM envisaged drilling of 109 borewells for sprinkle irrigation of saffron fields, but only 4 of the 85 wells dug so far were pumping water for this purpose.

Saffron is a very delicate crop and gets destroyed due to even little change of climate.

A little above 16,000 families were engaged in saffron cultivation in the valley against 19,000 a few years ago.

About 7000 families in couple of villages in 2012 offered their lands for rejuvenation of saffron under the NSM.

However, complaints have come that contrary to the aim of the NSM, not only the area under saffron has decreased but it’s yield per hectare has also fallen.

Saffron production in the state in 2015–2016 had fallen to nearly 10 tonnes against about 12 tonnes in 2010–2011 when the NSM was launched.

Japan to provide USD 3 million to Myanmar for Rohingya return

AP | Bangkok |

Japanese’s foreign minister on Friday urged Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to guarantee the safe and voluntary return of Rohingya Muslims who have fled violence in troubled Rakhine state.

While Foreign Minister Taro Kono is visiting Myanmar, the Japanese government announced a grant of 3 million to Myanmar’s government to help facilitate the repatriation of the Rohingya.

Myanmar and Bangladesh signed an agreement on the repatriation of Rohingya refugees on Nov. 23, and Myanmar said it would start the process by Jan 23. The exact numbers and extent of the repatriation is still unclear.

“We have decided to provide the aid in response to the agreement between Myanmar and Bangladesh to represent an international message of support so that the repatriation can be carried out promptly,” said Foreign Ministry official Shinobu Yamaguchi in a statement.

Kono’s three-day visit to Myanmar includes traveling to Rakhine state. Humanitarian groups and independent media are prohibited from traveling to the area freely.

More than 650,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape a brutal crackdown in which security forces have been accused of systematic abuses tantamount to ethnic cleansing.

During a meeting on Friday, Kono asked Suu Kyi’s government to allow humanitarian and media access to the affected area, the resettlement of returned refugees, and the implementation of recommendations made by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Kono also said Japan plans to give further aid to improve humanitarian conditions and development in Rakhine state.

“We are thankful to Japan for its willingness to support the needs both for short term and long term,” Suu Kyi said at the joint news conference.

Yamaguchi stressed that Japan will monitor how the repatriation will be carried out. “The money will be paid in a timely manner based on the progress of repatriation,” Yamaguchi added.

Myanmar’s state-run media on Wednesday said authorities have started the land work to construct buildings to accommodate returned refugees from Bangladesh in northern Rakhine, where refugees will be temporarily placed after their citizenship is scrutinized.

Torrential California mudslide takes lives of elderly, young

AP | Montecito |

The oldest victim swept away in a California mudslide was Jim Mitchell, who had celebrated his 89th birthday the day before. He died with his wife of more than 50 years, Alice.

The youngest, 3-year-old Kailly Benitez, was one of four children killed.

As their names and those of 14 other victims were released Thursday, crews kept digging through the muck and rubble looking for more people.

“At this moment, we are still looking for live victims,” Santa Barbara fire Capt. Gary Pitney said. But he confessed: “The likelihood is increasing that we’ll be finding bodies, not survivors. You have to start accepting the reality of that.”

The Mitchells were in love with their home in the seaside enclave of Montecito where they moved in 1995, according to their daughter. They also loved their dog, Gigi, who is missing.

The other children killed were 6-year-old Peerawat Sutthithepn, 10-year-old Jonathan Benitez and 12-year-old Sawyer Corey. None of the adult dead shared their last names.

All of the dead were killed by “multiple traumatic injuries due to flash flood with mudslides,” authorities said.

Forty-three people were missing, but many or most of them may simply have been unreachable to the family and friends who reported they couldn’t find them, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said.

Some smaller number, which authorities wouldn’t give, were actively being investigated as missing people who could be dead under the debris.

Pitney said many rescues were still happening Wednesday and Thursday, but most if not all were of people who were safe but just wanted to get out of the area.

Among the searchers were more than a dozen firefighters who climbed through rubble in the backyard of a mansion that had been torn apart. Some rescuers used poles to probe the muck for bodies, while others waded chest-deep in the mire.

Two black Labrador retrievers swam around a debris-filled swimming pool, trying to pick up any scent.

Crews marked places where bodies were found, often far away from a home, and used that information to guess where other victims might have ended up as the surging mud carried or buried them.

The mudslide, touched off by heavy rain, took many homeowners by surprise early Tuesday, despite warnings issued days in advance that mudslides were possible because recent wildfires had stripped hillsides of vegetation that normally holds soil in place.

Karni Sena protests outside CBFC office in Mumbai; members detained

SNS | New Delhi |

Members of Karni Sena were detained by Mumbai police after they ‘gheraoed’ the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) office on Friday to protest against the coming release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat”.

Members of the Rajput outfit, under the leadership of Sukhdev Singh Gogameri, gathered outside the CBFC office to express dissent over the censor board’s decision to allow the release of the controversial movie.

Virendra Singh, the spokesperson of Karni Sena, said that members from the outfit and even other Rajput associations assembled here to protest.

Jeevan Singh Solanki, a Karni Sena member, said: “We will not let the film release in the country under any circumstances. Some states have already agreed with us and therefore banned it. We want the film to be banned in the whole country.

“We will not stop here. We are going to urge our Prime Minister to ban the film because the movie will ruin the heritage and culture of Rajput community. The filmmaker has played with the sentiments of the Rajputs,” Solanki added.

Asked if they were ready to watch the film pre-release to clear their doubts, Solanki said: “The whole projection of our community is wrong. We do not want to see the film. It should be banned.”

The film, cleared by the CBFC after five modifications and renamed from “Padmavati” to “Padmavat” and now titled “Padmaavat”, is scheduled to release on January 25 across India. The film will, however, not be released in Rajasthan.

CBFC gave it the green signal with a U/A certification in consultation with a three-member advisory panel.

Cuts controversy

Earlier the makers of the film had said that there are no 300 cuts in Padmaavat.

“We appreciate the balanced and considered approach that the CBFC has taken to address this situation,” a company spokesperson from Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd said.

The clarification follows Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Prasoon Joshi’s statement that no more than five modifications have been suggested to the makers for the film to get U/A certificate.

Ranveer’s statement

The Rajput outfit had first expressed concern after Ranveer Singh — one of the three lead actors of the movie — made a casual statement back in July 2016.

Ranveer was reportedly asked if he was playing the role of a villain in the film, and he had said that he could go two notches beyond playing the role of a villain if he was given two intimate scenes with the film’s leading lady Deepika Padukone.

This led to the question whether the movie showcases any intimacy between Khilji and Rani Padmavati. Subsequently, Karni Sena activists assaulted Bhansali on the film’s set in Jaipur and another set in Kolhapur was vandalised.

They even threatened Deepika and Bhansali.

It’s so easy to mock someone nowadays: Taapsee Pannu

IANS | Mumbai |

Actress Taapsee Pannu feels social media has given people the power to mock someone easily, and says that it can “genuinely crush someones confidence”.

“I think with the power social media has given us, it is so easy to mock someone nowadays. What people don’t understand is that it can genuinely crush someone’s confidence. Just because a female does not walk by the conventional rules, people like to call her by different names which is highly upsetting,” Taapsee said in a statement.

The actress, who has been trolled for flaunting a bikini and wearing short dress on social media, will be addressing the issue through TV show “Troll Police”, which brings celebrities and their trolls face-to-face.

Talking about it, she said: “I too have been trolled, and through ‘MTV Troll Police’, I really want to convey the message to youngsters out there that do not use internet anonymity to shed the veneer of decency.”

Taapsee, who now has 5 million-plus followers on Instagram, is a part of the show for the first episode. She will come face-to-face with Ashish, a student from Lucknow and a self proclaimed social media blogger who trolls her on social media platforms.

“It’s humiliating! After achieving so much for yourself as an independent woman, this is how you get appreciated by the men of our society. After reading all these comments, sometimes I feel that I have opted for a wrong profession. Going forward if you see any of your friend or relative trolling someone then please share this experience with them.”

The show will go on air on MTV on Saturday.

Bihar Police looking for 6 men on rape charges

IANS | Patna |

Three women disciples from an ashram in Bihar’s Nawada district have accused six men from the institution of raping them at gun-point over several days, police said on Friday.

The three women of the Sant Kutir Ashram were raped inside the compound by nearly half a dozen “sewadars” between December 12 and 17, 2017, a district police officer said.

The victims were also warned by their attackers not to inform the police. However, the victims lodged a police complaint on January 4, he added.

All the accused named in the FIR were from Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district and were absconding, the officer said.

Nawada Superintendent of Police Vikas Barman said police teams have been formed, who are conducting raids to nab the accused.

The victims told the police that on December 12, when they were busy cooking food in their room in the ashram, sewadars, including Kalpanath Choudhary, Girijashankar Choudhary, Tapasyanand, Sheet Choudhary forcibly entered into their room.

The attackers then abused and caught them and raped them at gun point. They then threatened to kill them and fled from the room, the police said.

All three victims have recorded their statement under section 164 in Nawada civil court on Thursday. Their medical examination was conducted at the Sadar Hospital, the police officer said.

One of the victims informed the police that this was not the first incident of its kind at the ashram.

A few months ago, one of accused had allegedly raped a woman and forced her at gun point to keep silent. When others protested, the accused opened fire, in which one person was injured. The incident did not come to the police’s notice.

The victims said that some 50 women and two dozen men were staying in the ashram and the three of them were living there for the last six years.

Sweet sorbets

Summertime hues take a pastel route, while giving a much-needed break to florals and primary colors. So the next time you find yourself color co-ordinated with an ice-cream in hand, don’t sweat it. Ultra-violet is equally soothing for a cool summer.

Fringe fever

Never really gone from your line of vision, this culturally rich trend is back. It has come a long way from being the glamours add-ons of the 1920s to the casual identities of the 1970s. Modern-day fashion keeps reinventing fringes, always in a refreshed avatar. 2018 is no exception.

Athleisure goes retro

The sporty trend is ready to reign 2018. Nostalgia is the driving force here and wearability – the X-factor. Relaxed, luxurious and a hint of old-school vibes is the new go-to for millennials.

Denim go dark
