Polish president thanks Donald Trump for fighting ‘fake news’

AP | Warsaw |

Poland’s president has thanked President Donald Trump for fighting “fake news,” saying his own country experiences the power of fake news “first hand.”

President Andrzej Duda voiced his thanks to Trump in English on Twitter on Friday, a day after the US leader revealed his promised “fake news awards.”

In his tweet, Duda wrote that Trump “just stressed again the power of fake news. Thank you. We must continue to fight that phenomenon. Poland experiences fake news power first hand. Many European and even U.S. officials form their opinions of PL (Poland) based on relentless flow of fake news.”

One of the “awards” went to Newsweek for reporting that Duda’s wife, Agata Kornhauser-Duda, did not shake hands with Trump during a visit to Warsaw last summer. In fact, she briefly avoided Trump’s outstretched hand as she reached out to shake the hand of US first lady Melania Trump, but she did shake Trump’s hand afterward.

Critics say Trump’s attacks on what he calls “fake news” are attacks on media freedom that embolden authoritarian leaders around the world.

Duda’s tweet comes as Poland faces sharp criticism from the European Union over new laws that increase the ruling party’s control over the judiciary.

While the Polish government says the laws are needed to clean up a corrupt judicial system, the EU says they violate fundamental democratic values and has threatened sanctions against Poland.

SC rejects plea seeking quashing of CBFC certificate to ‘Padmaavat’

SNS | New Delhi |

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday turned down a plea that sought quashing of the CBFC certificate granted to controversial movie ‘Padmaavat’.

The three-judge bench of Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra refused to entertain a plea filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma, claiming that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate issued to Padmaavat was illegal.

Stressing that the apex court has to “function as a constitutional court”, the bench said that it had in its interim order passed on Thursday already said that states can’t block a movie from screening.

The court further said that maintaining law and order was not the court’s job.

“That’s the job of the state,” said the SC as it rejected the fresh plea seeking an urgent hearing in the matter filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma.

The CBFC had on December 30, 2017 gave Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ a UA certificate and suggested the director to change the film’s title to ‘Padmaavat’.

Meanwhile, the Rajput Karni Sena on Friday slammed CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi for clearing the film and said that he won’t be allowed to enter Rajasthan or take part in the Jaipur Lit Fest that begins on January 25.

On Thursday, hours after the Supreme Court lifted a ban on the film “Padmaavat” by some states, activists of Karni Sena attacked a cinema hall in Bihar and tore down posters of the movie.

Here is what Sachin Tendulkar said after Virat Kohli sweeps ICC awards

“It’s probably the biggest of all in world cricket and two Indians getting it back-to-back makes it more special.”

SNS |

The Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday wrote a special Tweet for Indian skipper Virat Kohli after he swept International Cricket Council Awards for 2017.

“No surprises there at all. You deserved it. Many congratulations, @imVkohli!,” wrote Sachin Tendulkar from his official Twitter handle.

In the ICC awards 2017, Virat was named ICC cricketer of the year, ICC One Day International Cricketer of the year and captain of both ODI and Test teams. And this is the second time when Virat is crowned ODI cricketer of the year. He had won the same award in 2012.

Virat also becomes the fourth Indian to win Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy award. Other than Virat, only Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Rahul Dravid (2004) and spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin (2016) have won this award.

“It’s the first time winning the Garfield Sobers Trophy, and it’s a huge honour for me,” Kohli said in a statement.

“It’s probably the biggest of all in world cricket and two Indians getting it back-to-back makes it more special.”

The award was decided on the basis of performance between September 21, 2016 to December 31, 2017, during which Virat Kohli scored 2,203 Test runs at an average of 77.80.

The Delhi lad also scored eight centuries in the time period in the longest format, including five double hundreds.

In ODIs, Kohli scored 1,818 runs at an average of 82.63, including seven tons, and 299 T20I runs at a strike rate of 153. With Kohli as skipper, India went on to register 9 consecutive series wins in the longest format, a record that India share with Australia.

Virat Kohli had also past the record of Aussie legend Ricky Ponting to the second spot in place in the all-time ODI centurion list with his 31st hundred. ‘God of cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar still holds the first spot.

Last year, Virat Kohli had become the fastest batsman to score 9,000 runs in the ODI. Virat had also surpassed Ponting by becoming the most successful captain in an ODI year.

India tops in producing bachelors in science, engineering

PTI | Washington |

India accounts for one-fourth of the estimated 7.5 million bachelors in science and engineering degrees awarded across the world in 2014, a report has said.

However, it’s the US that tops the charts in research and development spending, according to the annual Science and Engineering Indicators 2018 report of the National Science Foundation has said.

China’s growth in science and engineering field continued at an exceptional pace, the report said.

The US is the global leader in science and technology (S&T). However, its global share of S&T activities is declining as other nations — especially China — continue to rise.

According to the most recent estimates, in 2014, the US awarded the largest number of S&E doctoral degrees (40,000) of any country, followed by China (34,000), Russia (19,000), Germany (15,000), the United Kingdom (14,000) and India (13,000).

In contrast, the US lags in bachelor’s level degrees.

India earned 25 per cent of the more than 7.5 million awarded S&E bachelor’s level degrees in 2014, followed closely by China (22 per cent), the EU (12 per cent) and the US (10 per cent). Nearly half of all degrees awarded in China are in S&E fields.

Since 2000, the number of S&E bachelor’s degrees awarded in China has gone up by 300 per cent, the report said.

Among the major producers of S&E publications, the United Kingdom had the highest international collaboration rate (57 per cent) in 2016, followed by France (55 per cent) and Germany (51 per cent). The US followed with a 37 per cent international collaboration rate, up 12 per cent from 2006.

The impact of S&E publications has also become more global. Between 2004 and 2014, the share of US publications with citations from abroad increased from 47 per cent to 56 per cent.

While the US led the world in R&D expenditures at USD 496 billion (26 per cent share of the global total) in 2015, China was a decisive second at 21 per cent (USD 408 billion).

China has grown its R&D spending at an average of 18 per cent annually since 2000. During the same time frame, the US R&D spending grew by only four per cent.

According to the report, the US invests the most in research and development (R&D), attracts the most venture capital, awards the most advanced degrees, provides the most business, financial and information services, and is the largest producer in high-technology manufacturing sectors.

Similarly, while the US attracted the most investment (nearly USD 70 billion), accounting for slightly more than half of the global share, 26 per cent of total venture capital funds went to China.

Countries also specialise in different fields of research, with the US, EU and Japan publishing heavily across the medical and biological sciences, while India and China focus on engineering, the report said.

California couple deny torturing ‘shackled siblings’

IANS | Los Angeles |

The parents accused of holding their 13 children in shackles at a California home have pleaded not guilty.

David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, are facing charges of torture, abuse, and false imprisonment, BBC reported on Thursday.

They were arrested after their daughter escaped from their home where police found some of her siblings chained to their beds and severely malnourished.

The couple appeared in court hours after prosecutors detailed the horrific abuse allegations against them.

Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said the couple had allegedly punished their children by tying them up – first using ropes and later chaining them to their beds with padlocks.

He said the alleged punishments would last weeks or months, and intensified over time.

Prosecutors said circumstantial evidence showed the children were not released from their chains to go to the toilet.

The children, who are aged between two and 29, have been treated in hospital since being freed on Monday.

The teenager who escaped and alerted police to the house where her siblings were held captive had been hatching a plan to leave for two years, Hestrin said.

Hestrin detailed some of the gruesome allegations against the parents at a news conference on Thursday.

The shocking claims include:

The children were accustomed to frequent beatings, including strangulation.

They were only allowed one shower a year.

The children would stay awake all night until going to sleep at four or five in the morning and slept during the day.

They were not allowed to play with any toys but many were found inside the house in their original packaging.

If the children washed their hands above the wrist they were subjected to punishments, allegedly accused of “playing with water”.

The Turpin parents allowed their children to eat only one meal a day but the parents would sometimes buy food, like pumpkin pies, and place it where the children could see it but not eat it.

They have never seen a dentist and haven’t visited a doctor in over four years.

The children lack basic knowledge of life and did not know who a police officer was.

Tofu – Bean Curd – Protein Rich

Say yes to the whole, real soy – you can make it the best thing you have ever eaten while benefitting from its extraordinary health benefits.

Deepa Gupta | New Delhi |

Undoubtedly, milk nutrition is very important. It is one of the four major food groups. However, dairy foods certainly are not the only foods that provide bone-strength and good health. Non-dairy alternatives like tofu also serve the purpose.

Tofu or bean curd is a food derived from soybeans. It is made by curdling soya milk with a coagulant and pressing the curds into soft white blocks.

Tofu is made from soybeans. It is the rich source of plant protein. If you are eliminating milk from your diet, thankfully you don’t have to eliminate your favorite meals often having dairy products as a staple ingredient. Tofu, the helpful substitution will aid you in creating dairy-free versions of classic recipes as well as exciting dishes that contain milk and milk products. If you love to eat cheese but confront the problem with Lactose Intolerance, then also you can replace cheese with tofu.

Tofu contains high amounts of protein as compared to milk products. Not only protein, tofu is an excellent source of calcium and iron. It is lower in cholesterol. Its nutritional content is richer than cheese and the best part is that it tastes the same. Loaded with antioxidants and flavonoids tofu provides protection against cancer. It not only delays aging but reduces the risk of osteoporosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and liver damage. It also lowers the incidence of age-related brain diseases. The phytoestrogen in soya may help relieve symptoms related to menopause, such as hot flashes.

This soy-based protein can be added to any vegan meal for a little extra protein. You will love to have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The meat-like texture makes it much more porous to soak up delicious sauces and far more appetizing. Tofu can be so versatile and delicious – it only needs to be prepared in right way. Growing up eating it in different shapes and forms can leave anyone craving for more. Cooking with tofu is never boring!

There are different levels of firmness. Silken tofu is the softest type of tofu. It is so soft that it crumbles as soon as it comes in contact with chopsticks. It has subtle sweet and nutty flavor. The delicate texture is perfect for soups and smoothies. It is also good to eat on its own with a little drizzle of scrumptious sauces.

Medium firm tofu is still fairly soft. However, it is firm enough that it can be cut into cubes and you can hold it in your hands easily. It is perfect to make salad toppings.

Firm tofu holds its shape nicely as it is much less watery. It can be sliced, cubed and crumbled. Excellent in stir-frying, baking or grilling, it is a great vehicle for flavor. It can get beautifully crispy and absorb flavor really nicely.

Sadly, all tofu is not created equal. Embrace only the whole real soy. Say no to processed soy. It includes soy protein isolates and concentrates, soy supplements and soy junk foods. It also comprises of unhealthy fats and other compounds and doesn’t have traditional benefits that whole soy foods do.

Won’t let Prasoon Joshi attend Jaipur Lit Fest, says Rajput Karni Sena

SNS | New Delhi |

Slamming Prasoon Joshi for giving the go ahead to controversial film ‘Padmaavat’, the Karni Sena on Friday said that the CBFC chief won’t be allowed to enter Rajasthan or take part in the Jaipur Lit Fest that begins on January 25.

“Prasoon Joshi will not be allowed to enter Rajasthan or take part in Jaipur Lit Fest,” an agitated Sukhdev Singh of the Rajput Karni Sena said adding that Joshi had hurt their sentiments by certifying the film’s release.

The group also vowed to not let Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of ‘Padmaavat’ to ever shoot in Rajasthan again.

“Prasoon Joshi has hurt the sentiments of Rajputs and we will neither let him participate in Jaipur Lit Fest nor let Sanjay Leela Bhansali shoot in Rajasthan,” Ajit Mamdoli, another member of the group said.

Interestingly, the release date of ‘Padmaavat’ clashes with the inaugural session of the prominent Lit Fest as well.

The 11th edition of ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival 2018, touted as one of the biggest literary shows across the globe will host over 250 writers, thinkers, politicians, journalists and cultural icons from over 35 different nationalities at the Diggi Palace Hotel in Jaipur.

The festival will feature a line-up of speakers who have won major awards including the Nobel, Man Booker, Pulitzer, Padma Vibhusan and the Sahitya Akademi Award. They will representing over 15 Indian and more than 20 international languages.

The literary extravaganza will come to an end on January 29.

On Thursday, hours after the Supreme Court lifted a ban on the film “Padmaavat” by some states, activists of Karni Sena attacked a cinema hall in Bihar nd tore down posters of the movie.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had on December 30, 2017 gave Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ a UA certificate and suggested the director to change the film’s title to ‘Padmaavat’.

Five elections in Asia to watch out in 2018

DataLEADS/ANN) | New Delhi |

First up is Afghanistan, where 20 million voters are scheduled to cast their votes on July 7. The country is at a crossroads after decades of war and chaos.

Despite relentless Taliban attacks, Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission is conducting the parliamentary polls in the war-torn country on July 7, almost three years late. Holding free, fair and peaceful elections is a priority as the war-torn country’s last presidential elections saw the top two candidates bickering over who the real winner was.

A US led deal finally led to the formulation of the National Unity Government, with Ashraf Ghani as president and Abdullah Abdullah as chief executive officer.

In Pakistan, political parties are making efforts to prepare themselves for next parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on 15 July.  Pakistan’s politics have been in turmoil since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was dismissed from power last year on corruption charges.

In the current National Assembly, his party, the Pakistan Muslim League holds 189 seats out of total 342, while the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party holds 47 seats. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, led by famed cricketer turned politician Imran Khan, holds 33.

The next Asian country with elections on the cards is Cambodia, where the national election are scheduled on July 29. Thirty-five political parties are officially registered, according to Cambodia’s interior ministry. However, the country’s top court dissolved the main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party last year.

The party’s leader, Kem Sokha, was arrested in September on charges of treason. He remains in detention. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen recently marked 33 years in power.

Cambodia’s volatile political situation has contributed to the absence of more than one million eligible voters in the registration. According to the official data, only 536,023 new voters have registered out of 1.6 million estimated new voters. Overall a total 8.3 million people have signed up to vote.

Meanwhile, Malaysia, where Najib Razak has been Prime Minister since 2009, is also preparing for elections this year to be held on or before 24 August. Najib is seeking to recapture the ruling coalition’s long-held two-thirds majority.

Najib has faced strong opposition particularly because of corruption allegations. One of his biggest critics is his onetime mentor and former prime minister, 92-year-old Mahathir Mohamad. Mahathir, who has been outspoken in his criticism of Najib, said last week that he would run as the opposition’s candidate in the upcoming election.

Malaysia’s neighbour Thailand, where the military has been in power since 2014, is going to hold elections on November 18 this year after repeated delays. The junta has repeatedly delayed elections, citing concerns such as changes to the constitution and security issues.

The Thai military has seized power 12 times since 1932 in the country, but last year it pledged to help conduct free and fair elections and not to stage another coup after the next election.  Around 50 million people are eligible to vote in the Thai elections.

Fire at Navrang Studio in Mumbai’s Lower Parel, fireman hurt

PTI | Mumbai |

A major fire broke out at Navrang Studio inside Todi Mill Compound in south Mumbai’s Lower Parel early on Friday morning, leaving a fireman injured, a senior fire brigade official said.

Part of the studio, which was shut years ago, was gutted in the blaze. The building, in which the studio is located is dilapidated and unoccupied, the official said.

“At 1 am, our firemen received a call about the blaze in Todi Mill Compound in Lower Parel. The fire brigade jawans reached the spot by 1.17 am with eight fire engines and water tankers,” chief of the Fire Brigade P S Rahangdale told PTI.

The flames were doused within a few hours, he said.

“The fire was confined to Navrang Studio located on the fourth floor of an industrial complex, which is quite old, dilapidated and unoccupied,” Rahangdale added.

He said one of the firemen received minor injuries in the incident during fire-fighting.

The studio is just a few hundred metres away from the Kamala Mills compound, where a massive blaze on December 29 killed 14 persons.

Earlier this month, a huge fire had gutted Cinevista studio in suburban Kanjurmarg, in which an audio assistant in was killed.
