A day after several students of Jamia Millia Islamia were detained and later released over their protest against show cause notices sent to two PhD scholars, they alleged on Friday that their names and other details were made public by the varsity which was a "clear violation of their privacy".
In a statement, JMI PRO stated, “Taking a serious view of the attempt to tarnish the composite character of the institution, JMI has lodged a complaint against unknown miscreants for disrupting Diwali celebrations in the campus.”
The varsity has also decided to extend online classes for the students till May 31. Earlier, the classes were to end by April 30.
The arrested student, Miran Haider, is also the head of the Delhi youth wing of jailed politician Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Police's response came during the hearing of a petition in a Delhi court by the Jamia Millia Islamia administration seeking the court's order for registration of an FIR against the cops for using excessive against the students.
The Opposition led by the Congress reiterated its demand for action against the Delhi police.
On December 15, 2019, police barged in the Jamia campus in the hunt for the protesters who were protesting outside the varsity campus against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The protesters were believed to be Jamia students, however, the investigation reports stated differently.
“Everything shouldn’t be always law centric. The government should also gauge the public mood and I think, as per the public mood, the government should immediately scrap this law,” said Nandita Rao, a Supreme Court lawyer.
On December 15, police took to lathi-charge and entered the varsity's premises as well as fired tear gas shells inside the campus.
