Buffon reaches landmark as Germany hold Italy

AFP | Milan |

Gianluigi Buffon earned a European record-equalling 167th cap as Italy played out a goalless friendly draw with their Euro 2016 quarter-final tormentors Germany in Milan on Tuesday.
The 38-year-old Buffon, who made his Italy debut in 1997, is now level with retired Spain legend and fellow goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Although Buffon is now just 17 behind world record-holder Ahmed Hassan of Egpyt (184), the appearance of AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma for a more positive second half was a reminder that retirement may not be too far off.
Hosting Germany just four months after a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat ended their Euro 2016 hopes in Bordeaux, Italy were looking to end their three-game winless streak against the world champions.
But the hosts failed to transform a promising finish to the game into a win, Torino striker Andrea Belotti notably hitting the upright late on.
“We were facing the world champions and gave very little away,” said Italy coach Giampiero Ventura. Apart from hitting the post, we had four or five situations that we could have done better with.”
Like Ventura, Germany boss Joachim Loew has one eye on the future and made several changes to his established starting line-up. By the end, he was largely happy with their performance.
“It was a good and important result for us, especially our young players,” he said.
“We can be totally satisfied, even though we could have tightened up a little in defence.”
Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil were both rested, and regular skipper and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was out with a virus, handing Bernd Leno the gloves for the night.
Buffon had to be alert to thwart Thomas Mueller as he chased a ball over the top and the Juventus ‘keeper was also grateful to Davide Zappacosta for producing a timely block after Leon Goretzka’s flick sat up nicely for Mueller to unleash a first-time drive.
Donnarumma, just 17, replaced Buffon to warm applause for the start of the second half, claiming only his second cap after making his debut against France in September.
Italy threatened when Belotti drilled a high shot wide of post and bar after finding space from 20 yards out. Belotti and Ciro Immobile, who combined have scored seven of Italy’s last nine goals, were finally beginning to gel.
But the hosts saw claims for a penalty waved away after Belotti squeezed between Shkodran Mustafi and Jonathan Tah before tumbling in the area.
Germany brought on Serge Gnabry, who hit a hat-trick on his debut in a 8-0 rout of San Marino last Friday, for Goretzka while Mueller made way for Kevin Volland.
And Volland had the ball in the net when he flicked Joshua Kimmich’s drive across goal past Donnarumma, only to be ruled offside.
Italy enjoyed a positive finish, but failed to breach the Germany goal. Substitute Federico Bernardeschi should have done better than shoot tamely at Leno and Lazio striker Immobile curled a shot wide after being set up by Belotti.
The Torino forward could have nicked the win late on, but he saw his low angled strike come off the base of the far upright with Leno beaten.

WC Qualifiers: Messi too good for Colombia in Argentina win

The diminutive maestro opened the scoring with a superb free-kick in the 8th minute.

Lionel Messi’s special performance inspired Argentina to a vital win over Colombia, keeping their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying hopes alive with a 3-0 result on Wednesday.
The diminutive maestro, criticised for not performing at the same level for his country as he he does for club Barcelona, opened the scoring with a superb free-kick in the 8th minute.
Despite the set-piece being some way away from the goal, the ball whizzed over the wall and hit the underside of the bar, leaving the sprawling David Ospina with no chance.
Lucas Pratto, in the line-up in place of Gonzalo Higuain, doubled La Albiceleste’s lead in the 23rd minute, guiding home a precise Messi cross with his head.
And Messi again was the provider for the final goal, chasing down a Colombian defender on the  right wing, before unselfishly squaring it for Angel di Maria, who slammed the ball into an empty net  to quell any hopes of a Colombian comeback in the 84th minute.
With the win, Argentina are fifth in the CONMEBOL 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying zone, just one point behind both fourth and third placed Chile and Ecuador who have 20 points.

England held by resilient Spain in friendly

Both sides fielded weakened starting XI's, but England looked the stronger side on paper at least.

SNS | New Delhi |

England was denied a famous win over Spain in an action-packed international friendly at Wembley, blowing a two-goal lead to finish the tie at 2-2 late on Tuesday.

While both sides fielded weakened starting XI’s, England looked the stronger side on paper at least, at kick off.

And with a lightning start, thanks to the ever-alert Jamie Vardy, the hosts got a penalty in the 8th minute itself. Adam Lallana’s perfectly weighted low cross evaded Inigo Martinez and while Vardy was forced outside due to the onrushing Pep Reina, the England striker ensured the goalkeeper made contact inside the box.

Lallana dispatched his penalty high to the keeper’s left, but despite Reina diving the right way, he could not prevent England from taking an early lead.

Billed as the match that could make interim manager Gareth Southgate permanent should his side show enough promise, England were quite impressive in attack, their speed leaving their Spanish opponents trailing in their wake.

Three minutes into the second half, England doubled their lead, Jamie Vardy heading home a looping Jordan Henderson cross to send a raucous Wembley crowd into delirium.

Spain manager Julien Lopetgui made a host of changes as he urged his side to try and salvage something from the match.

Iago Aspas, ridiculed to great extent in England during his horrid time with Liverpool, scored a great goal, dazzling John Stones with stepovers before firing a booming shot in off the post which left keeper Tom Heaton with no chance to reduced the deficit in the 89th minute.

The fourth official declared five minutes of added time and England tried to hold on, but substitute Isco, conjured something special, turning and pirouetting in the England box before he finished from an acute angle to level the tie in the 95th minute.

For both teams and their respective managers, there is plenty of scope for improvement, not least their defensive frailty but the big question is: Has Gareth Southgate done enough to convert his tenure into a permanent one?

A decision from the FA is expected in the next couple of days and with few candidates in contention, one feels Southgate may just get lucky.
