Mama Ayesha’s yet to add Trump to its Presidential Mural

IANS | Washington |

Mama Ayesha's, a popular restaurant in Washington D.C. known for its Presidential Mural featuring every US President from Eisenhower to Obama, will not add President-elect Donald Trump to the mural until the restaurant can afford to make the update.

"While there remains room for two additional Presidents to be added, we currently do not have the budget for this addition," Xinhua news agency quoted Amir Abu-El-Hawa, whose family owns the restaurant, as saying.

"President-elect Trump has yet to take office and will occupy the oval office for the next four years. When the funds are available and the budget allows for it, Mr. Trump will join the rest of the Presidents on our wall," he wrote in an e-mail sent to the local newspaper Washingtonian before the New Year's Eve.

"This decision is strictly a financial one and not in any way political, as both Republicans and Democrats alike are featured on our mural," Abu-El-Hawa wrote.

The restaurant has been at the same location since it opened its doors as the Calvert Cafe in 1960, according to a report from the Washingtonian.

The mural depicts its founder "Mama" Ayesha Abraham and the US Presidents. She was a Muslim and Arab woman immigrated from Palestine to come here.

"This is Mama welcoming the Presidents to DC," says Abu-El-Hawa, who is her grand-nephew.

Abraham left the restaurant to Abu-El-Hawa's father and his uncle when she passed away in 1993. The artist Karla "Karlisima" Rodas began painting the mural, which was supported in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, in 2007 and finished it in 2009.

Many roads leading to Connaught Place, like Barakhamba, Janpath, Sansad Marg, Ashoka Road, Kali Bari, Kasturba Gandhi Marg were choked with traffic.

People rushed to India Gate to usher in the New Year, leading to chaotic traffic conditions on the roads, a traffic police officer said.

Traffic between Gurdwara Rakabganj and Fateh Nagar Gurudwara was heavy owing to the Nagar Kirtan.

Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police took to Twitter to inform people about the heavy traffic movement at all arterial roads leading to choc-a-bloc- situation.

Kohli wants to emulate work ethic of Ronaldo

Kohli takes inspiration from Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, whose work ethic is something that he wants to emulate.

PTI | New Delhi |

Every individual has flaws but the ones who can successfully work around their chinks, can attain high level of consistency desirable from a top quality cricketer, feels Indian Test captain Virat Kohli.

With 1215 runs in Tests and over 2500 plus runs across all formats in 2016, Virat has been a standout performer for India and he feels that it's about knowing his game better.

"It can be put down to understanding my game a lot better than I used to. Being happy with the ability I have, the sort of drawbacks that I have. I understand my flaws and strengths nicely," Kohli told ecb.co.uk during an interaction.

"It's also about finding the right balance. People talk about not having flaws and it's wrong. Everyone has flaws and consistency is nothing but overcoming those flaws and finding the ability to score runs in Test format, especially which I wanted to find within my game. I feel in happy space knowing exactly where my game is going," said the dashing batsman.

Kohli takes inspiration from Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, whose work ethic is something that he wants to emulate.

"I take a lot of inspiration from Cristiano Ronaldo. The way he has stayed on top for so many years, it's nothing but down to hard work. I have heard he is the most hardworking footballer in the world and that's why he is where he is.

Messi is a freak (genius) but this guy (Ronaldo) is giving him run for his money because of his hard work," Kohli opined.

Kohli said that pressure of performance is something that he has embraced as one can't run away from it.

"It's about how you perceive that situation. It's very similar when you go out to bat. Either you see four slips standing at the back or you see the boundaries only.

"The external pressure, I have started enjoying it rather than running away from it because if I run away from it, it may come back to hound me and catch me and put me down to a level that I can't imagine. So I have to take it along with me and find a way to deal with it.

Manoj Tiwari spends night with slum dwellers in Delhi

PTI | New Delhi |

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari spent New Year's night with the people of a slum in south Delhi's Inderpuri area, where members of his party's digital team expounded on the benefits of mobile banking to the residents.

Tiwari, however, said he wanted to conduct a reality check about the "tall claims" of development by Arivind Kejriwal-led government in Delhi.

"I have taken up this exercise of going amongst the people to make a reality check into the tall claims of development works in Jhuggis made by Kejriwal government," Tiwari said.

BJP National Secretary and former lawmaker R P Singh also camped with Tiwari at the Gas Godown Jhughi Basti Choupal, where Delhi BJP's digital team made a presentation on the benefits of mobile banking and helped people download Bhim App, SBI Buddy and other mobile banking applications.

Tiwari discussed about the benefits announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi like 'motherhood medical assistance', interest raise for senior citizens and interest subsidy on housing loans and highlighted the scheme of 'Home for All' by 2022.

Tiwari, a popular Bhojpuri singer-actor, sang songs and bhajans with children and also spoke to women who complained that water supply is given to them hardly four days a week that too in late hours even in this season.

Several issues like a lack of bathing space, poor toilet mainenance, locked up Anganwadi community room, slit outflow into the Basti from adjoining major drain, water scarcity, shortage of teachers in government school in the vicinity and collapsed Public Distribution System were discussed at length with the dwellers.

Tiwari left the slum around 10.15 am today while directing R P Singh and councillors to resolve their problems.

‘PM’s 50-day Shuddhi Yajna an uncontrolled forest fire’

IANS | New Delhi |

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress on Sunday said that his demonetisation step, which Modi dubbed as a "Shuddhi Yajna", was "an uncontrolled forest fire" that claimed over 100 lives.

"The 50 days of so-called Shuddhi Yajna is nothing short of an uncontrolled forest fire that has taken a toll on 118 lives across the country and has crippled around 40 per cent of informal economy," senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told media persons here.

He said the decision to scrap Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 currency notes has completely failed as "due to the faulty design of the exercise and lack of adequate preparation or consultation…almost all of the black money has been converted into white".

"Why is government not giving any hard data over demonetisation, such as how much money has come back? People were waiting for hard data on how much black money was extinguished, if sufficient quantity of new RS.500 notes were issued and clarity on the legal issues raised," Chavan said.

"In short, people expected Prime Minister to declare that the exercise was successful and that suffering was for a good cause. But he gave no hard data. What he gave at the end of 50 days is a mini budget speech, full of jingoistic appeal wrapped up in nationalistic fervour," he added.

He also said that there was "fear that the Prime Minister would unleash second surgical strike and announce further harsh measures in his fight against corruption" in the New Year's Eve speech.

Picking holes in Modi's speech, Chavan noted that the aid announced for pregnant women was first started in November 2010 as a pilot project during UPA regime and became part of National Food Security Act in 2013.

"The initial amount of Rs 4,000 was hiked to Rs.6,000 in 2013 itself. Modi did not start a new scheme now," he said.

Chavan said that Prime Minister has announced some interest subvention schemes and appealed to the banks to concentrate on the poor and middle classes, but he must know that banks do not work on appeals from anyone but strictly under the Banking Regulation Act and the RBI Act.

"RBI (Reserve Bank of India) will have to issue orders and government will have to compensate Banks for any interest subsidies," he said.

The Congress leader said that due to demonetisation the manufacturing sector has come to a grinding halt with laying off of thousands of labourers, and agriculture has been hit the hardest as notebandi coincided with harvest of kharif crop and sowing of rabi crop.

Demonetisation fallout: Jan Dhan deposits rise over 50%

IANS | New Delhi |

Deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have grown by more than 50 per cent since the demonetisation announcement on November 8, an official statement said on Sunday.

"As on December 21, deposits worth Rs.71,557.90 crore had been mobilsed under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)" and that this scheme for financial inclusion had succeeded in opening over 26 crore accounts, said a Finance Ministry statement.

The Income Tax Department has earlier reported that total deposits amounted to Rs 45,637 crore on November 9, the day from which Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes ceased to be legal tender, in a move designed by the government to eliminate black money, counterfeit currency and terror financing.

As on the eighth day after the announcement, aggregate deposits in Jan Dhan accounts had increased to Rs 64,252.15 crore, Parliament was told during the recent winter session.

The government had, on November 18, warned account holders on not allowing misuse of Jan Dhan accounts for laundering black money post-demonetisation and in its wake, inflows into such accounts had come down significantly, the government has said.

In a release early in December, the Finance Ministry said there has been a continuous fall in deposits, after an initial surge post November 8.

Total amounts deposited during November 8-15 were Rs 20,206 crore, while during November 16-22, people deposited Rs 11,347 crore in such accounts. This further fell to Rs 4,867 crore during November 23-30. Total daily deposit in Jan Dhan accounts was Rs 410 crore on December 1 and Rs 389 crore on December 2.

"The Income Tax Department has identified the local clusters and bank branches where the inflow of Jan Dhan deposits have been more than normal, in order to investigate money deposits in Jan Dhan accounts which belonged to somebody else," an official statement said.

Federer can still win a Grand Slam, says former coach

Roger Federer's former coach Paul Annacone has asserted that the tennis star can return from six months out with injury and win another Grand Slam.

IANS | Los Angeles |

Roger Federer's former coach Paul Annacone has asserted that the tennis star can return from six months out with injury and win another Grand Slam.

"Last year was a very tough year for him and he still got to the semis of Wimbledon," Annacone, who coached the Swiss ace from 2010 to 2013, told BBC Sport on Sunday.

"There is no reason why he can't play at that level again."

Federer, a winner of 17 majors, is due to make his comeback from a knee injury against Britain's Dan Evans in the Hopman Cup in Perth on Monday.

"When you look at his track record, particularly on grass, if he's healthy, it's going to be very difficult not to put him in the sentence as one of the favourites.

"Again, it's about staying healthy, but I absolutely think he can contend for a major title," Annacone said.

Federer is yet to set foot on court since hurting his left knee after losing in the Wimbledon semi-finals to Milos Raonic in July.

But Annacone believes Federer's extended absence "could be a positive".

"It's given him time to refresh and really get his body healthy.

"Six months isn't critical — it's not what I would call lethal. I know how hard Roger's worked and how professional and meticulous he is about his preparations," the American said.

"It is a challenge, but great players love challenges. I expect great things because he's a great player."

Federer had a knee surgery in February 2016. He last won a tournament in November 2015 — the Swiss Indoors — and has not won a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2012.

SP splits as Akhilesh seeks to take control of party

PTI | Lucknow |

The Samajwadi Party on Sunday split with rival factions carrying out mutual expulsions as Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav sought to take control of the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh.

In dramatic developments, Akhilesh was "unanimously" crowned the SP president and his warring uncle Shivpal Yadav removed as state party chief at a national convention called by Ram Gopal Yadav, where the CM's faction claimed that over 200 of the party's 229 MLAs, around 30 MLCs, besides majority of office bearers of district units were present.

Ram Gopal also moved a proposal to make Mulayam Singh, the founder president of the party, as party patron while "outsider" Amar Singh was expelled from the party.

The proposal to make Akhilesh SP chief was welcomed by a huge applause by nearly 5,000 partymen who had gathered at the sprawling Janeshwar Misra Park here.

Mulayam soon struck back expelling his cousin Ram Gopal from the party for six years and termed as illegal all decisions taken at the convention.

In a hard-hitting letter, he said the convention had not been called with permission of the national president and so all decision taken there were illegal.

Although Mulayam warned that participation in the convention will be taken as indiscipline and action will be initiated against those attending it, almost all senior leaders who had been longtime associates of Mulayam shared the dais with Ram Gopal and Akhilesh.

Addressing the convention, Akhilesh said he respected his father more than ever and that he would stand against those conspiring against the party while Ramgopal attacked Shivpal for working in an "arbitrary" manner, alleging tickets were being given to those who are not even members of the party.

The convention also authorised Akhilesh to constitute a national executive, parliamentary board and various state units, as required, and inform the Election Commission of the developments at the earliest.

The fresh developments which almost left both Mulayam and younger brother Shivpal isolated in the party came a day after SP revoked the expulsion of Akhilesh and Ramgopal amid the running bitter turf battle in the Yadav clan which threatens to affect its prospects in the upcoming Assembly election.

In more signs of defiance, Akhilesh appointed MLC Naresh Uttam as the new state president, replacing Shivpal.

Mulayam retorted by expelling national vice president Kiranmoy Nanda and general secretary Naresh Agarwal from the party for taking part in the convention.

Soon after the appointment of the new state unit president, supporters of Akhilesh laid siege to the state SP headquarters here in the high security VIP zone and forcibly wrenched out the nameplate of Shivpal to vent their ire.
