Matt Damon’s worries for soon-to-be father George Clooney

PTI | London |

Actor Matt Damon has said that he is clueless about how George Clooney will cope with having twins, as the "sleepless nights" will be worse with two babies.

Clooney, 55, and his lawyer wife Amal are expecting a boy and a girl as twins, the actor's mother has confirmed.

During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Damon, who is a longtime friend of Clooney, said, "(George) said to me, 'Well, you have four.' And I said, 'Yeah, but not at once!' We did it one at a time. I don't know how anybody does twins. Those sleepless nights… and there's two of them? There's just no way. But we'll see."

Meanwhile, Damon, 46, previously admitted he "almost started crying" when his Ocean's Eleven co-star shared the happy news with him.

"I was working with him last fall and he pulled me aside on set and I mean, I almost started crying. I was so happy for him. And I was like, 'How far along is she?' And he goes, 'Eight weeks'."

Book to chronicle Dream Girl’s journey

PTI | New Delhi |

Dream Girl Hema Malini's incredible journey from an actor, a danseuse and filmmaker to a politician is being chronicled in a new book which will hit stores on her 69th birthday this October.

Billed as an authorised biography, "Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl" is penned by author-columnist Ram Kamal Mukherjee.

"In an industry where the male star has always driven the commercial success of films, Hema Malini was an exception, with her name alone sufficing to ensure a film's box-office glory," publisher HarperCollins India said.

A truly multi-faceted personality, Hema Malini has been a filmmaker and producer, directing films and television serials, a Member of Parliament from Mathura, and has also performed the classical dance ballets Draupadi, Radha Krishna and Durga.

This year she will be seen in Ramesh Sippy's unusual love story "Shimla Mirch" with Rajkumar Rao.

The book will be published on her birthday on October 16.

Speaking about the book, Hema Malini says, "As editor-in-chief of Stardust, Ram Kamal, had done a coffee table book on me almost 10 years ago. It was a beautiful pictorial representation of my career as an actor. I wish him all the best for his latest endeavour with HarperCollins in writing another book on me."

Mukherjee says this is the right time to revisit Hema Malini's life and achievement, since she has been extremely active as a stage performer, actor and a politician.

"My first book on Hema Malini was pictorial, but this time it will be more about her achievement as a politician apart from her sojourn as an actor, danseuse and filmmaker. It will offer a new perspective on Bollywood's first female superstar."

Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, executive editor, HarperCollins India, says, "For an entire generation in the 1970s and 80s, the name Hema Malini was synonymous with everything that was beautiful and glamorous. To get an inside look at the life of one of our greatest cinema icons is simply incredible.

UN condemns deadly terror attack on Sufi shrine in Pak

PTI | United Nations |

The United Nations Friday condemned the terrorist attack inside a crowded Sufi shrine in Pakistan's Sindh province that left over 75 people dead and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justices swiftly.

"We extend our condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Pakistan, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. We call for the perpetrators of this attack to be brought to justices swiftly," said a statement issued by the Office of the Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

The statement said that the UN supports the government of Pakistan in its fight against terrorism in full respect of international and human rights norms.

At least 76 people were killed and nearly 250 others injured when an Islamic State suicide bomber blew himself up inside the crowded shrine of revered Sufi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan town, some 200 kms northeast of Karachi.

The attack follows a suicide bombing at a rally in Lahore on Monday, and a suicide bombing on a government compound in the Mohmand tribal area and an attack on a government van carrying judges in Peshawar on Wednesday.

Rupee falls further, down 8 paise against Dollar

PTI | Mumbai |

The Rupee came down by a further eight paise to 67.15 against the US currency in early trade on Friday after importers chased the Dollar.

Dealers attributed the Rupee's fall to increased demand for the US currency, but the solid opening of the domestic equities coupled with the Dollar's losing ground against some currencies overseas put a lid on the losses.

On Thursday, the Rupee had dropped 17 paise to close at 67.07 on fresh Dollar demand from banks and importers despite weakness in the greenback globally.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rallied 424.99 points, or 1.50 per cent, to 28,726.26 in early session.

Zuckerberg expresses concerns on anti-globalisation trend

IANS | London |

Mark Zuckerberg has revealed deep-seated concerns that the tide is turning against globalisation.

In an interview with the BBC on Thursday, the Facebook founder said that fake news, polarised views and "filter bubbles" were damaging "common understanding".

He said people had been left behind by global growth, sparking demands to "withdraw" from the "connected world".

In a call to action, he said people must not "sit around and be upset", but act to build "social infrastructures".

"When I started Facebook, the mission of connecting the world was not controversial," he said.

"It was as if it was a default assumption that people had; every year the world got more connected and that seems like the direction things were heading in.

"Now that vision is becoming more controversial."

He told the BBC: "There are people around the world that feel left behind by globalisation and the rapid changes that have happened, and there are movements as a result to withdraw from some of that global connection."

Zuckerberg's interview comes alongside the publication of a 5,500-word letter he has written about the future of Facebook and the global economy.

In it, Zuckerberg quotes Abraham Lincoln who spoke of acting "in concert", and talks about "spiritual needs", civic engagement and says that many people have "lost hope for the future".

"For a couple of decades, may be longer, people have really sold this idea that as the world comes together everything is going to get better," he said.

"I think the reality is that over the long term that will be true, and there are pieces of infrastructure that we can build to make sure that a global community works for everyone.

"But I do think there are some ways in which this idea of globalisation didn't take into account some of the challenges it was going to create for people, and now I think some of what you see is a reaction to that.

"If people are asking the question, is the direction for humanity to come together more or not? I think that answer is clearly yes.

"But we have to make sure the global community works for everyone. It is not just automatically going to happen," he said.

Trump’s pick for National Security Adviser refuses offer

IANS | Washington |

Vice Admiral Robert Harward has rejected US President Donald Trump's offer to be the new National Security Adviser, a media report said.

Sources close to the situation told CBS News that Harward and the administration had a dispute over staffing the security council.

Harward demanded his own team, and the White House resisted, they added.

Trump told Deputy National Security Adviser KT McFarland that she could retain her post, even after the ouster of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Harward refused to keep McFarland as his deputy, and after a day of negotiations over this and other staffing matters, Harward declined to serve as Flynn's replacement.

Harward, a 60-year-old former navy officer, served as deputy commander of US Central Command under now-Defence Secretary James Mattis.

He previously served as deputy commanding general for operations of Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Harward has also commanded troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan for six years after the September 2001 attacks. Under former President George W Bush, he served on the National Security Council as director of strategy and policy for the office of combating terrorism.

Flynn resigned from the post amid questions about his contacts with Russian officials, CBS News said.

Law enforcement sources confirmed earlier this week that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents had interviewed Flynn last month.

According to the Defence Intelligence Agency, Flynn's security clearance has been suspended as investigators look into his ties to Russian officials.

Fadnavis emerges as BJP’s face in Maha poll campaign

PTI | Mumbai |

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has emerged as BJP's face in Maharashtra civic bodies poll campaign-related publicity material, with a new video hitting the social media today that lauded the work initiated by him since assuming charge in October 2014.

The 2.43 minutes video titled "This is our Devendra" has been released in Hindi and Marathi and lists various developmental schemes under Fadnavis' leadership in the state, including those for women's security and employment.

Also out is a comic book like caricature strip, showing Fadnavis as the harbinger of water to drought-hit Latur last year, when the state government ran 'water trains' to the Marathwada town. The strip shows people of Latur thanking Fadnavis, who is seen peeping from clouds bringing rain.

There is also a Marathi audio jingle on local radio stations doing the rounds, which asks voters to remember the "surgical strikes by the Modi government and the good work by Fadnavis". The jingle is in the form of a powada, a kind of ballad written in an exciting style and used to narrate historical events in an inspiring manner.

Added to this are hoardings on city roads and memes and photos on social media.

Posters featuring Fadnavis and declaring "ha shabda maza ahe (this is my word)" have been put up all over the city to counter Sena posters, which claim credit for work done by the civic body. The BJP posters have the tagline as "parivartan tar honarach (change will happen)" denoting its resolve to dethrone the Sena in the BMC.

Besides the official BJP posters and social media accounts, animated videos depicting the Shiv Sena as a "corrupt tiger" being controlled by a "lion" are also making the rounds.

Europa League: Zlatan does the trick for Manchester United

The Red Devils' 'old man' shines yet again!

SNS | New Delhi |

Manchester United star Paul Pogba was up against his brother Florentin Pogba as the Red Devils hosted French side Saint-Etienne but it was Zlatan Ibrahimovic who stole the show in the Europa League clash on Thursday night with a hat-trick to put the English giants in command of the tie.

United trotted out in a strong line up, with Ibrahimovic starting up front with the likes of Pogba, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial in support. United’s number one goalkeeper, David de Gea, was rested and Sergio Romero started in his place.

The home side endured a few nervy moments before finding the opener, with Eric Bailly guilty of a few errors which almost contributed to an away goal.

Zlatan was fouled on the edge of the box and his subsequent free-kick got a wicked deflection off the wall, sending Stephane Ruffier the wrong way in the 15th minute as the Red Devils got off to the best start possible.

Martial was the other United player to put in a superb shift on the night, dragging defenders out wide before cutting in and shooting but could not find a way past Stephane Ruffier, who was having an immense game between the sticks.

The visitors threatened went close to getting the away goal they were desperate for, but could not apply the finish, much to the relief of the home crowd.

United manager Jose Mourinho introduced Marcus Rashford in the second half and the youngster’s introduction injected pace into the attack and he was the catalyst for United and Zlatan’s second. His cross-shot from the left was palmed by Ruffier into Zlatan’s path, who passed the ball into the in the 75th minute to confirm the result.

And the icing on the cake was set when Zlatan went down in the box in the 87th minute, with referee Pavel Kralovec pointing to the spot. The Swedish superstar made no mistake with his spot-kick, sending the keeper the wrong way to put United in pole position to make the last 16.

The second leg is scheduled for next Wednesday and barring an incredible comeback from the French side, United should be through.
