Big Little Lies: Emotions running higher than ever!

Sushmita Kamrupa | New Delhi |

Series: Big Little Lies

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Laura Dern

Genre: Drama-Comedy

Director: Jean- Marc Valle

Episode 2: 'Serious Mothering'

As we peak into the lives of Monterey folks for the second week nothing has changed except for the fact that emotions are running higher than ever, terrains are marked more viciously and kids…are busy being kids.

The first episode ended with people questioning ‘So are we like seriously considering it murder’ and the second episode begins with Madeline staring out of her terrace into the beautiful coast-side view.

The second episode is named ‘Serious Mothering’ and delves into the hardcore ‘helicopter parents’ and their politics. As the episode develops the mean moms are brought onto the surface and propaganda wars are fought between exes and spouses. Childhood traumas are brought into the light. Bullies exist not just in school but in adult life too.

Amabella doesn’t invite Jane’s son Ziggy for her birthday party. Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) confronts Renata (Laura Dern ) about leaving out the child that could stigmatise him further and make the situation worse.

Renata stands firm on her decision and an inevitable showdown follows exasperating Madeline’s husband- Ed who finds his wife’s constant meddling into other people’s business.

While Madeline is busy fighting best PTA mom battle, Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) violent and disturbing relationship with Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) is revealed.

Abigail- Madeline’s older daughter obtains birth control pill with Bonnie’s help and there follows another of those Madeline’s showdowns.

Life gets even harder for young Ziggy after he is accused of hurting Amabella once again. It still isn’t clear whether the kids are hurting one another due to their kiddish actions or are they replicating what their parents are doing in their adult lives.

The power-packed star cast doesn’t disappoint but the young actors in their brief yet deciding scenes leave an impact. Amabella’s accusation though not proven as false yet, seems out of place, especially when Ziggy is accepted easily by each of his classmates.

Running on a much faster space as a mini-series, Big Little Lies’ second episode saw a deeper character development rather than the story itself.

The underlying persona of Madeline’s quiet husband saw the shades of someone with a difficult childhood. Perry’s character sees a more aggressive turn shows the traces of strained relationship with Celeste.

The unexplained sadness of Celeste comes to light in this episode. Madeline’s good person character is definitely underlined with the fact that she wants to be credited with all the goodness she does.

She likes to win, and when push comes to shove, she might go with winning rather than backing off for general peace.

It is only when Ed confronts her with the fact that she has made him a consolation prize rather than being with him because she truly believes that he is ‘the one’ for her.

Nothing major has happened for us to point out to the killer or the victim yet, but the intrigue and drama still continues for us to await the next episode.

Facebook to update suicide prevention tools for Live videos

IANS | New York |

With the surge in instances of people using Facebook Live to stream suicides, the social networking giant is including new options for people to report such videos.

According to a report in Abc News on Wednesday, Facebook said that it's in a "unique position," through personal connections people have on Facebook, to help connect those in distress with people who can support them.

Facebook is allowing users to report a live broadcast for an escalated response from Facebook.

That will trigger Facebook to reach out to emergency workers, if the person is in imminent danger.

"Separately, the person filming will also be shown a set of resources pop up on their phone screen, so they can contact a friend or a help line," the report noted.

The new tools extend to the Facebook posts also as the company is rolling out features to report posts about suicide or self-injury.

Those feeling depressed will have easier ways to contact crisis workers through Messenger.

Rupee rides on GDP numbers, up 6 paise in early trade

PTI | Mumbai |

The Rupee edged higher by six paise to 66.76 against the Dollar in early trade on Thursday after exporters and banks stepped up selling of the US currency.

Forex dealers said that a higher opening in the domestic equity market and robust GDP numbers for the December quarter also supported the Rupee.

However, the strength of the Dollar overseas on growing expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month, limited the gains.

Fed policymakers have been hinting at a rate hike at its meeting scheduled on March 14-15, irrespective of US President Donald Trump's budget plans. This has made the US markets soar to record highs of late.

On Wednesday, the Rupee had lost 13 paise to close at 66.82 against the Dollar.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex regained the 29,000-mark by surging 148.46 points, or 0.51 per cent, to 29,132.95 in early trade on Thursday.

People who threatened Gurmehar should be jailed, says Kabir Khan

PTI |

Filmmaker Kabir Khan says it is sad the way people behave on social media and feels angry over the treatment meted out to Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur.

Kaur, the daughter of army martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, had started a campaign 'I am not afraid of ABVP', following violence at Ramjas College. The campaign went viral on social media and received a massive support from students of various universities.

However, the 20-year-old student on Tuesday withdrew from her social media campaign after allegedly receiving threats from the members of the RSS-backed outfit.

When asked for his reaction on the issue, Kabir told reporters, "You feel really angry. The way we are supposed to conduct ourselves in the society has completely broken down over this social networking.

"It is unbelievable that someone can issue such threats to a 20-year-old girl and get away with it. It's criminal. The only way to counter this is to throw those guys in the jail," he said.

The director was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Colors Khidkiyan, a five-day theater festival organised by Bollywood casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

Last week, Delhi University's Ramjas College witnessed large-scale violence between members of AISA and ABVP workers.

The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on Culture of Protests which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the ABVP.

FA Cup: Manchester City thrash Huddersfield to reach quarters

A trip to Middlesborough awaits Pep Guardiola's side after their impressive win!

SNS | New Delhi |

Manchester City on Wednesday recovered from an early blip to rout Championship side Huddersfield Town 5-1 in their FA Cup fifth round replay at the Etihad Stadium, booking quarterfinal date with Middlesborough in the process.

After a drab goalless draw had been played out at the John Smith’s Stadium, the replay at the Etihad had promised goals and it delivered, much to the delight of Sky Blues support.

Manager Pep Guardiola was keen to avoid an embarrassing upset, sending out a strong starting XI which had young Aleix Garcia as the only unfamiliar player in the line up.

City should have scored the opener early on, but Leroy Sane’s thundering cross was touched onto the post by Raheem Sterling to give the visitors a reprieve. And they took full advantage of that when Harry Bunn finished between Claudio Bravo’s legs after a rapid Huddersfield counter attack had left City reeling.

While Guardiola’s strategy of playing Bravo in cup ties is admirable, this was another goal which perhaps Willy Caballero could have saved had he been in the starting XI. The Spanish manager has a pretty straightforward choice since Caballero is clearly the better keeper of the two, but his strange policy is clearly hurting City at the moment.

From that moment on, it was all one-way traffic in the expensively-assembled Manchester City’s favour, as they looked to get back among the goals as quickly as possible.

Fernando and Kevin De Bruyne went close, but were denied by some last-ditch defending but a City goal felt inevitable considering the intense pressure they were applying.

It was Sane who opened City’s account on the night, arriving at the right time to turn in Sterling’s cross from close range in the 30th minute. And City took the lead for the first time in the tie when Sergio Aguero emphatically dispatched a penalty five minutes later. Nicolas Otamendi was the recipient of some rough treatment by Jon Stankovic and match official Paul Tierney pointed to the spot after a second’s hesitation.

Aguero could have had a second minutes after his first but while his low shot in a one-on-one with Joel Coleman had the Huddersfield keeper beat, it grazed the post to deny the prolific striker.

Aguero then turned provider for City’s third goal, laying it off for his fellow Argentine Pablo Zabelta in the 38th minute. The striker’s booming shot came back to him and he chose to pass to the veteran full-back as the home side went in to the interval firmly in the driver’s seat.

Huddersfield had the first major chance of the second half, with Joe Lolley heading just wide after finding himself unmarked in the City box, with the home side looking a little sluggish in the opening exchanges.

However, City then made sure of the result when Aguero’s first-touch finish off Sterling’s cross in flew past Coleman in the 73rd minute to quell any hopes of a Huddersfield comeback.

Substitute striker Kelechi Iheanacho then added gloss to the scoreline in the 91st minute, his deft touch on a Jesus Navas cross deceiving Coleman.

City travel to Middlesborough on the 11th of March for a quarterfinal tie and Guardiola has an excellent chance of winning a trophy in his maiden season in charge of the cash-rich club.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated the defence scientists for successfully testing the interceptor missile and said that it was a proud moment for the entire country.

"With this, India joins the select group of five nations with such capability – a proud moment for the entire country," the Prime Minister said in a tweet.

India on Wednesday successfully test fired the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) Missile, the second level of two-tier interceptor missile system that can destroy hostile ballistic missiles.

The latest test comes less than a month after India successfully tested the Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) interceptor missile on February 11.
