Go organic this Holi, play safe

Avoid using synthetic clours. Buy organic ones for this Holi celebration. Play safe, make merry and stay healthy.

Deepa Gupta | New Delhi |

One cannot imagine Holi without colours? Colours are the life and vitality of the festival. They are the most joyous part, making a beautiful rainbow sight and cheering up moods.

According to mythology, the colourful Indian God, Lord Krishna started the tradition of colours in the country. He was dark in colour and his soulmate Radha was very fair. Being jealous with her fair complexion, he started playing the game of applying different colours on her skin. Later, it turned out to be a full-fledged festival.

Holi is round the corner. You all must be set to buy colours. Beware of the chemical induced ones. They are health hazardous, sometimes even leading to death. Virtually making the participants unrecognisable by applying herbal colours is a good idea to exchange Holi greetings. Invest in branded sealed packets of herbal colours. Open the packet and smell it to check if it is contaminated with chemicals or not. The smell will easily tell you if it is not eco-friendly. Read the instructions and ingredients carefully before buying. Organic are definitely a safe option and conserve environment too. On the other hand, chemical induced colours are dark, strong and oil based. They may contain glass powder. Keep this poisonous powder or liquid away from you and your dear ones.

Ill effects of using chemical based colours:-

Skin: Allergy, rashes, redness, swelling, itching, irritation, skin discolouration, skin cancer etc.

Eyes: Allergy, redness, watering, soreness, puffiness, weakening eyesight, temporary or permanent blindness.

Hair: Scalp allergy, hair fall, hair dryness, itchiness etc.

Other health issues: Mental retardation, risk of miscarriage, ill effects on fetal growth, paralysis, bronchial asthma, weak bones, fever,  bad effects on metabolism function etc.

Say no to these harmful chemicals and make your own herbal colours at home

Red: Dry pomegranate peel and rose petals. Process them together in powder form. Use dry as colour with lovely fragrance or mix in water.

Yellow: Dry marigold petals and process in powder form. Mix them along with besan, sandalwood powder and little amount of turmeric powder. Your aromatic colour for Holi is ready. Mix it in water to make it coloured.

Green: Mix mehendi powder with little flour. Use it as dry herbal green colour. You may dissolve it in water too.

Orange: Dry orange peels. Process in powder form and use as colour for playing Holi.

Majanta water: Grate beet root in water and boil for few minutes. Leave for five to six hours. Strain and use to play Holi splashing safe coloured water on each-other.

Green water: Process green leafy vegetable like spinach, mint etc. into fine paste and mix in water. Get ready to drench in it safely.

Saffron water: Boil Palash flowers in water. Leave for few hours. Strain and use to make the environment more romantic.

Be cautious on Holi. Play safe and stay healthy. Splash herbal colours and water, after all  ‘BURA NA MANO HOLI HAI’.

I owe my life to Karan Johar: Sahil Vaid

Ankita Chakravarti |

Actor Sahil Vaid, who has won the hearts of his audience with his roles in films like Bittoo Boss and Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, is back to create magic on screen with Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which made its way to the theatres on Friday.

In an exclusive interview to thestatesman.com, Sahil Vaid poured his heart out on his experience in Bollywood, the camaraderie he shares with Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan and a lot more.

“My journey in Bollywood started while I was still studying in Whistling Woods. I got a film called Happi starring Pankaj Kapoor, which was never released, after which I got a leading role in Fauji 2 which was produced by Redchillies. That too never could saw the light of day.

"I started voice acting and dubbing to make ends meet, I even drove cabs between Mumbai and Pune for a couple of months, my first film that ever released was Bittoo Boss, starring Pulkit Samrat, I loved working on it but it did not do well at the box office. It was Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania that put me on the map and got me my break, and now Badrinath ki Dulhania is releasing. It's been a rollercoaster ride" said the Whistling woods alumnus on how he got his break in Bollywood.

In Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Sahil shares the screen space with two most sought after Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. "Shooting with Varun and Alia is like going on a fun trip with a bunch of friends, a memorable trip which should never come to an end. They are both lovely people and amazing actors, I love working with them," said Sahil, who plays the role of Varun's friend in the film.

Reminiscing about the time spent during the shoot of Badrinath Ki Dulhania, the actor said, "When I look back on my journey through this film, I feel really sad that it's over, it started on a very low note for me, I had lost my father and my grandpa in the same week. This was not just a film for me. It was a reminder for me how my family made sacrifices for me, being on this film actually helped me recover from my loss much faster.

"Varun, Alia, Shashank, Raaj Mehta our associate director, my buddy Gaurav Pandey and every member of the crew have been such a sweetheart that this journey had become like a beautiful memory and I will cherish those days forever."

Having done two most important films of his life with Dharma Productions, Sahil feels that Dharma is instrumental in shaping his life in a certain way.

"Dharma Productions is the best place to work, they look after their cast and crew. Dharma knows how to make films and keep the team motivated, I just told Karan Johar on the trailer launch that I owe my life to Dharma Productions, to him and I meant it," the actor signed off.

Celebrations break out at UP BJP office, silence at SP office

IANS | Lucknow |

Overjoyed BJP workers, leaders and supporters hugged each other, broke into brief jigs and raised victory slogans in the BJP office here as counting trends indicated a comfortable victory for the party in the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly elections on Saturday.

In contrast there was no activity at the ruling Samajwadi Party's office.

The Bharatiya Janata Party office is just across the road of the sprawling Vidhan Sabha building.

BJP workers raised slogans like "Chappa Chappa Bhajpa", "Kahan pade ho chakkar mein, koi nahin hai takkar mein" and "Modi Modi".

Some were also carrying posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who most feel acted as the game changer in BJP.

The imminent victory is set to end the BJP's 14-year exile in the state which the party said has been "ruined" by the BSP and the SP in the last decade.

There was no activity at the ruling Samajwadi Party's office at Vikramaditya Marg, which is located just next to the house of former party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, with counting trends indicating a drubbing. The sprawling BSP office near the Annexe, the power centre of Uttar Pradesh government, also wore a deserted look.

Congress office at Mall Avenue, which saw limelight return to it after the party entered into alliance with the ruling SP, also was deserted with almost negligible visitors.

I am non-violent person in real life: Taapsee Pannu

IANS | Mumbai |

Taapsee Pannu, who has been portraying strong characters in her films, says in real life she is a non-violent person.

"I can't even slap someone in real life. Naturally, I am quite a hyperactive girl because I was into sports in my school days. So, because of that, my attitude seems like that only. Otherwise, I am a non-violent person in real life," she said at the launch of training video of the new song "Zinda…" from "Naam Shabana" on Friday.

After delivering a powerful performance in the critically acclaimed "Pink" last year, Pannu is back with another intense film "Naam Shabana", in which she plays the no-nonsense and fearless spy Shabana.

Speaking about the filmm she said: "I had to practise a lot for action sequences. Sometimes I had to take physiotherapy because I felt stiffness in muscle and joints became weak because of action stunts. Mentally and physically this character is really very tough for me because it is not at all related to my personality."

On being asked, as the film is a spin-off of the hit film "Baby", is there any pressure for her, she replied: "We have the same star cast in the film but Akshay is in a cameo. Also, there are Manoj Bajpai and Prithviraj Sukumaran who are also outstanding actors in their own way.

"However, playing the title role isn't a pressure for me because Neeraj (Pandey) and Akshay sir supported a lot. I am not in a pressure but I am excited to learn that if being a two-film-old actress, I can play the central character in the film, then the usual idea about the industry, which says it is tough to get the lead for a new actor, is proven wrong."

The action spy thriller is directed by Shivam Nair and produced by Neeraj Pandey. It is a prequel/spin-off from the 2015 film "Baby" and also features Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa and others. The movie is scheduled to release on March 31.

Live assembly election 2017 results: Manipur headed for hung assembly

SNS | New Delhi |

As reports from morning suggested a neck-and-neck fight between the BJP and the congress in Manipur, political analyst failed to notice the surge in independent votes.

'Others’ turned out to be decider in this poll with massive 11 seats.

BJP at 21 and O Ibobi-led Congress at 27 now depend on the mercy of the independents to form government in the Northeastern state.

Others’ continued to show impressive improvements from morning itself and secured a well deserved 11 seats.

Of 60 assembly seats, Manipur which has gone under counting for 59 seats does not have a single-majority party and is totally dependent on the independents to form government in the state.

Manipur economic blockade, talks of creation of new districts and strong anti-incumbency against the ruling congress seem to have marred the prospects of Ibobi government to seek another term.

BJP has been successful in making mark in the state with no-presence and dominated by Congress from past 15 years. Strong voters’ turnout and support of Hindu community ‘Meitis’ have also gone to help the saffron party in the state.

Earlier, an expected see-saw battle between activist Irom Sharmila and the incumbent chief minister O Ibobi turned out into a damp squib with the former posing no fight to Manipur CM with mere 90 votes.

Sharmila was also reported saying never to contest election again after the embarrassing defeat.

Meanwhile, after a good show by the BJP, the Textile Minister Smriti Irani tweeted; BJP's electoral gain in Manipur is a reiteration of support by the people of the North East for PM @narendramodi ji's 'Act East' policy.

Apart from good show in Manipur BJP also routed its way to gain complete majority in the UP and Uttarakhand and came almost near to win Goa. Congress could find solace in Punjab only.

As per the trends available at 6:30 pm:

Parties Leads Won
Congress 27
BJP 21
NPP 4
Others 7

If the existing trend is to be followed, Manipur is clearly staring at hung assembly.

The majority mark in the state is 31.

Eva Mendes works out five days a week in summer

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actress Eva Mendes works out five days a week when she wants to get in shape for the summer or for a star-studded event.

The 43-year-old, who has daughters Esmeralda, two, and 10-month-old Amada with her partner Ryan Gosling, has ditched her 45-minute steady cardio sessions for interval training and will work out almost every day in preparation for an event or for the warmer months, although she will reduce her fitness regime down to three days during her off-season period, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"I love doing intervals, like running and sprinting, and I see great results with that versus the 30 or 45 minutes of steady cardio I used to do on the treadmill," Mendes told Shape magazine.

"Between intervals, I lift weights. I'm off-season right now, so I work out three days a week. But when I'm getting ready for an event or in the summer, it's five days a week. I don't exercise more than that though, because I see better results when my body has a rest period," she added.

The "Hitch" actress will always have eggs for breakfast, and will eat the same meal for her lunch and dinner because she is a "creature of habit".

"I usually start my day with eggs. I think they're like magic – you can do so much with them. I mostly keep it simple and have scrambled eggs and a piece of Ezekiel toast for breakfast. For lunch, I usually have salmon and rice or quinoa, and I try to include a salad. I'll eat the same thing for dinner. I'm a creature of habit in that way. I don't get bored with food. I try to think about it as fuel for my body," she said.

Singing helped Emma Watson in acting

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actress Emma Watson says she has continued singing lessons following her role as Belle in the live action film "Beauty and the Beast".

"I've found it (singing) actually really helps my acting, and my speaking voice. It's great for my breathing and a discipline that I really like," Watson told dailymail.co.uk

Watson, who shot to fame as Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" franchise, had to show off her singing voice to director Bill Condon to get the part. But she only agreed to do it if he got her a draft of the script so she could ensure her character Belle was imbued with a sense of "adventure, wanderlust and heroism" in keeping with her feminist beliefs.

Talking about her audition, she said: "I had three hours in a recording studio. It was really raw but Bill was pleased. And Disney was pleased."

But Watson still found the audition process nerve-wracking as it has been years since she last had to sing.

"I hadn't sung since I was about 12. This was something I'd always wanted to do, but I thought, 'is my voice still there?' I just hadn't used it, but it was a very pleasant surprise to find it was still there. I just had to kind of unearth it," she told dailymail.co.uk.

Watson declared that Belle is "one of my absolutely favourite Disney characters" and she was delighted to land the part in the story.

"She's book smart, emotional, sweet and romantic. It's not like she's cut off from that part of herself because she has a brain. I think Belle is one of those characters who really turns the feminist, man-hating thing on its head.

"It's not that she doesn't want to get married because she hates men. She doesn't want to get married because she wants to explore the world; and she wants to have adventures; and wants her independence. So she wants to be with someone who will enable and empower her, as opposed diminish her. She wants it on her own terms."

"Beauty and the Beast", a live-action remake of Disney's 1991 film of the same name, is releasing in India on March 17.

Assembly election results 2017: BJP takes strong lead in UP, Uttarakhand

The BJP on Saturday took winning leads in both Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand while the Congress raced ahead of the AAP in Punjab as officials counted votes polled in assembly elections.

In Goa, the Congress was leading in eight constituencies to the BJP's three.

Bharatiya Janata Party candidates led in 190 of the 277 seats in Uttar Pradesh after one hour of counting, with party leaders saying that the BJP could win as many as 250 of the 403 seats if this trend continued.

In contrast, the alliance of the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Congress led in 64 constituencies, followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 23.

Election Commission officials said the BJP was leading in most major cities including Allahabad, Lucknow and Kanpur.

Even in Amethi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP's Garima Singh had forged ahead.

The story was no different in neighbouring Congress-ruled Uttarakhand where BJP candidates led in 27 of the 33 seats where counting trends were available.

The Congress was in the lead in five seats and the BSP in one seat.

In Punjab, defying most exit polls which had projected a neck-and-neck outcome, the Congress had forged ahead in 50 of the 86 seats followed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 22.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine led in 13 seats.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, 89, was leading from his Lambi seat over his rivals Amarinder Singh (Congress) and Jarnail Singh (AAP).

But his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal trailed to AAP's Bhagwant Mann in Jalalabad.

Counting of votes for the 117 Punjab assembly seats as well as the by-election to the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat was on. The Amritsar Lok Sabha seat was vacated by Amarinder Singh in November.

A party needs 59 seats to gain a simple majority in Punjab.
