Luis Enrique takes entire blame for Barcelona’s defeat to Juventus

Enrique said he cannot erase first half woes out of his head.

IANS | Turin |

FC Barcelona chief coach Luis Enrique has taken the entire blame for the Catalan football giants' 0-3 defeat to Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-finals tie here.

Barcelona have been underwhelming this season losing to Malaga in the weekend and then conceding two goals by halftime against Juventus on Tuesday. Paulo Dybala scored both the goals with Giorgio Chiellini adding gloss to the scoreline with a third strike.

"It was a difficult first half, very similar to the one in Paris and the second was much better. If you gift the first half, then obviously you're going to have problems," Enrique was quoted as saying by Mediaset.

"A coach does everything to help the team and prepare them, but evidently I did not. We have to improve, learn from these mistakes, analyse the game carefully and realise where we went wrong.

"It's the second time this has happened. It's hard to think of a remuntada (comeback), but we'll try to get back on our feet and put in a good performance in the second leg.

"It's not good to pick on single players after a defeat. It's a defeat for the whole team, starting with the coach."

In the round of 16 tie, Barcelona lost 0-4 against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, only to win the return leg 6-1 and go through 6-5 on aggregate — the first time such a first-leg deficit had ever been overturned in the European Cup.

"The feelings as manager are lamentable and it's difficult to explain. Positioning was a shipwreck, I wasn't able to transmit it well," he admitted.

"I take responsibility 101 per cent. We had better positioning in the second half, but the rival also let us have the ball. We created clear chances, but when you're having a nightmare like we had today you don't have that spark needed to take them.

"I don't have any energy to think about it now, but tomorrow will be the moment to pick ourselves up again and thing about getting three goals to level the tie and four to win it."

Enrique said he cannot erase first half woes out of his head. "I can't get the first half out my head. It's a shame because I saw the players with the intention to compete and to fight for the Champions League, but we've once again made errors," he pointed out.

"It doesn't matter if I think the result is fair or not, it is what it is. It was the third half off Paris and leaves a lot to be desired.

"I have little appetite to talk about the future now. Even though I am optimistic, it's natural I also pass through moments when I grieve. I am 100 per cent responsible and that's difficult."

India must ask for copy of judgement on Jadhav: Jethmalani

PTI | New Delhi |

India must seek from Pakistan a copy of the judgement awarding death sentence to former navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav so the grounds on which he has been convicted is known, noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani has said.

“We want to know whether the sentence is right, and right as in, whether the conviction is right, then the question comes of what kind of punishment for that.

“Suppose he has been convicted on stupid evidence, then that makes a much stronger case for India,” he said.

The eminent criminal lawyer was speaking on the sidelines of a conference on 'Improving Indo-Pak Relations' at the India International Centre here which was also attended by Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit, its former foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri and senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar.

At the end of the conference last night, commotion prevailed briefly at the venue, as several members of the media mobbed Basit and Kasuri with a volley of questions, against the backdrop of widespread outrage in India over the death penalty to 46-year-old former officer on charges of alleged “espionage and sabotage” activities.

“Reactions are flying thick and fast from every side, and media is also reacting to it strongly. But, one must know on what evidence he has been convicted, first of all.

“I should read what is the charge and what is the evidence on which they (Pakistan) have acted, and why this death sentence. Death sentence is justified only in those cases in which you cannot imagine a more serious offence, that is the law, as far as I can see,” Jethmalani said.

The 93-year-old lawyer, who was born in Sindh province (now in Pakistan) of undivided India also urged media to exercise restraint while asserting both the countries must continue to engage peacefully to resolve outstanding issues.
“Today people are giving opinions on the case (Jadhav's) without reading the judgement. I have not read it, and I do not want to aggravate the situation. But, whole press seeking opinions, have they read the judgement, nobody.

“We have made our stand, but we want to see the judgement. So, we (India) must ask from Pakistan the certified copy of the judgement.. Before we burn bridges, we need to think properly,” he said.

Asked if Pakistan would be willing to share the copy of the order, he said, “Have we asked for it, that it has not been given.”

Former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) A S Dulat described the situation as “crazy”.

“The whole episode surrounding Jadhav's case is so crazy. I wonder if Pakistan would be willing to share anything,” he said on the sidelines of the event.

Dulat ran into Kasuri while he was entering the conference hall and left soon thereafter, after exchanging pleasantries.
During the event, some reporters had posed questions to Kasuri and Basit on the raging issue of death sentence awarded to Jadhav by a Pakistani military court. But both of them declined to answer.

Surrounded by a battery of reporters and camerapersons, Kasuri only said, “Even many civilians in Pakistan have been tried by military courts.”

During his talk at the conference, Pakistan's foreign minister said, both sides must not allow things to drift away and that it is in Islamabad's interest to have good relations with India.

At the same time, he admitted that things between the two neighbours are not looking good.

“Relationship is not normal right now. Rhetoric not particularly good on either side of the border. I must admit I was initially hesitant, but it is these times that we must persist and talk about peace,” he said.

India has warned Pakistan of the “consequences” Jadhav's hanging could have on their ties and vowed to go “out of the way” to save him amid pervasive outrage in the country.

HC sets aside environment nod for Tata’s Chandigarh housing project

IANS | New Delhi |

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday set aside the grant of various environment approvals given to the Tata Camelot Housing project near Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh.

A division bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw asked the Punjab government to reconsider all the approval granted by various state authorities for the housing project.

The court's order came on PILs seeking quashing of sanction and approval granted for the project in Kansal village near the lake, since, according to a survey the project falls within the catchment area of Sukhna Lake and it was declared a reserved forest area.

The Rs.1,800 crore venture was proposed on 53.39 acres of land, which would have around 2,100 flats in 19 towers, ranging between 12 and 35 storeys near the Chandigarh Capitol Complex.

The project site is about 123 metres from the Sukhna wildlife sanctuary, while the Sukhna Lake is just 1,500 metres away.

The pleas said if the land and its surrounding areas are allowed to be urbanised, "it will result in the degradation of the habitat and disturb thousands of migratory birds which come every year to the Sukhna Lake".

Darul Uloom head appeals clerics not to participate in TV debates

Statesman News Service | Meerut |

The Mohtamim of Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom of Deoband Maulana Mufti Abdul Kasim has appealed to Ulemas and Muslim clerics not to participate in debates on television channels on triple talaq, multi marriages, common civil code and other issues related to Muslims and called these debates an "unholy attempt" under the 'Shariyat' provisions.

Darul-Uloom of Deoband is one of the biggest Islamic Seminary of the World known for its fatwas. Its head, the Mohtamim is an authority and any words coming from him are expected to have a marked influence on Muslim Clerics.

Maulana Abdul Kasim issued a statement for Muslim clerics, Ulemas and Maulanas, in which he made a strong appeal, advising them not to make any appearance in TV debates whose topics are related to Muslims and their family issues. He said that an environment of confusion has been created due to the negative agenda of the national media and the attitude of courts as well as the government on Muslims, specially triple talaq and common civil code.

Besides being on the target of the government, the issues of Common Civil Code and triple talaq are already in the court of law. Yet such important religious issues related to Islam are being picked up by the media, especially, the news channels as topics of debate these days, said the Maulana.

"The only purpose of these debates is to make an unholy attempt to interfere in the undisputed decisions of the Shariyat and to have a bad influence on the common people. Such debates are never joined by strong Ulemas and neither should not participate. But some people representing Muslims portray a wrong picture in these debates and give a wrongful description of the Shariyat," the Maulana said.

The Maulana further advised that people who want to gain knowledge on issues related to Islam should =contact Madrasas across the country and the Darul–Ifta.

Pakistan, India cannot remain enemies forever, says Pak NSA

PTI | Islamabad |

Pakistan's National Security Adviser Nasser Janjua has said that the two neighbours “cannot remain enemies forever” and they need to engage and resolve their disputes.

Janjua's remarks comes against the backdrop of spike in Indo-Pak tensions over the death sentence awarded to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav by a military court and New Delhi's warning to Islamabad to consider the consequences on bilateral ties if he is hanged.

Pakistan's NSA claimed that the international community is overlooking Kashmir issue due to their own strategic interests related to India.

“Although India considers Kashmir a bilateral issue, it has defeated the spirit of bilateralism by defying any dialogue over it,” Janjua said while speaking to Canadian High Commissioner Perry Calderwood on Tuesday.

“Extreme thoughts are to be mitigated through a change of perception, by winning hearts and minds and not by use of force alone,” he said, referring to the situation in Kashmir.

“We need to engage with each other and resolve disputes,” Janjua was quoted as saying by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

“Pakistan and India cannot remain enemies forever,” he said, amid a strain in Indo-Pak ties.

Janjua and Calderwood discussed regional dynamics and bilateral ties, Pakistan's role in eradicating terrorism, counter-terrorism cooperation, the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) and Pakistan-India relations with reference to the US' offer for mediation.

Janjua also underscored the need for a non-discriminatory approach while considering Pakistan's membership for elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

Acting is not my life: Nargis Fakhri

IANS | Mumbai |

Actress Nargis Fakhri says being in films is not her only aim in life and she wants to pursue
other things as well.
The 37-year-old actress says she wants to meet new people and learn new things.
"Acting is not the only thing… I want to do a lot in life. When you are on sets you are always acting you are not
interacting with people in life and not learning anything new.
There is so much more to learn and do different things in life. I want to balance things by doing acting and other
things," Nargis told.
The actress says she enjoys being a public figure but travelling and exploring different places is her passion.
"I am a different person. I like to cook, plant flowers and travel. I like to live life. I want to explore
other things but not related to cinema as such. I would want to be a public personality on television or do something
different," she adds.
After doing back to back films like Azhar, Housefull 3 and Banjo last year, the actress has now decided to go
slow.
"Last year I did four films and it's damn tiring. I will never do that again. I will go slow now on. One film a
year will be amazing."
Nargis, who launched her own app last evening, says there are both pros and cons of being on various social media
platforms.

"The positive side is you see you are so popular. I did not know I was so popular. I felt I am like a regular person
and nobody likes me. But when I see social media and the good comments and when I go out and people talk sweet things to me, I feel overwhelmed. There is a negative side as well."

Kerala HC directs CBI to probe actor Mani’s death

IANS | Kochi |

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the CBI to begin a probe, within a month, into the death of actor Kalabhavan Mani.

The family of Mani approached the court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

Mani, 45, who acted in 200 films in Malayalam and other languages, was admitted in a hospital here on March 4, 2016 as he said to be suffering from a liver ailment. He died two days later.

A police probe team has, even after more than three months, not been able to make much headway even as forensic experts said an insecticide (chlorpyrifos) was found in the actor's body.

Mani was staying at a 30-acre farmhouse near Chalakkudy, away from his home where his wife and daughter reside.

After his death, hospital authorities reported the presence of a chemical in the body, leading to speculation that he may not have been died a natural death.

Since then, the family has been demanding a probe to ascertain the real cause of the death. The Kerala government last year too sought a CBI probe, but the agency had not taken it up.

Earlier this month, Mani's brother RLV Ramakrishnan met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and repeated the family's demand that the real truth come out only through a CBI probe.

BJP welcomes people committed to Modi’s leadership: Pradhan

IANS | New Delhi |

Accused of working to split the Odisha's ruling BJD, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday said the BJP will welcome “clean and strong” leaders from other parties if they show commitment to the Prime Minister.

“We want to strengthen our party. Whoever is committed to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah are welcome to join us. We will welcome clean and strong leaders,” Pradhan, a key BJP leader from Odisha, told reporters.

There have been reports, fuelled by war of words between some BJD leaders including Lok Sabha members, that a section of its leaders is inclined to split the party to join the BJP, which has emerged stronger in the state following the local body polls.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had met the party MPs in Parliament during a visit to the national capital and trashed split talks, blaming the BJP for fuelling such “false” reports.

The BJP has instead blamed internal discord within the regional party and maintained that it has no role in it.

AMU students’ union seeks total ban on cow slaughter

PTI | Aligarh (UP) |

The President of the AMU Students' Union has demanded a complete ban on cow slaughter across the country.

Addressing protesters at a rally organised by the AMUSU at the District Collectorate today, its president Faizul Hasan said, "We would support any move made by the Central government to impose such a ban keeping in view the sentiments of Hindu brethren."

Hasan said he would also support a "complete ban" on the closure of all export-based slaughterhouses and a total ban on all import and export of bovine meat, including buffalo meat, because it was leading to an unnecessary internal tension between different communities in the country.

Transport of buffaloes to slaughterhouses has become a cause of communal friction since so-called cow vigilantes are continuously taking law in their own hand at highways in different parts of the country, he said.

The AMUSU later presented a memorandum addressed to President Pranab Mukherjee to the Additional City Magistrate demanding fast track court trials of the cases of violence involving cow vigilantes.

The memorandum stated that country needs to "take urgent notice of non-State actors spreading terror" and threatening the peace of the land in the guise of cow protection.

It also demanded framing of a new law to prevent acts of cruelty against minorities and other weaker sections.

Earlier, the students' union took out a procession to press their demands.
