So when the ‘Hit Man’ got out cheaply in the first innings of the second Test, things would not have been different as apart from Sharma, the skipper, too, was trolled on Twitter, where the fans questioned the exclusion of the vice-captain from the team.

The cricket experts as well cricket lovers of India wanted Ajinkya Rahane back in the playing eleven.

Rohit Sharma averages 24.55 on foreign soil, while Rahane has a terrific average of 53.44 while batting in overseas matches.

Earlier, captain Kohli along with the team management and head coach Ravi Shastri was back-lashed for dropping star pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and including Ishant Sharma in the second Test.  After getting thrashed by 72 runs in the first Test, Virat had made three changes in playing eleven.

Wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel replaced Wriddhiman Saha, opener KL Rahul came in for Shikhar Dhawan, while pacer Ishant edged out Bhuvneshwar for a place in the playing eleven.

In the opening Test match of three-match series in Newlands Cape Town, Sharma scored a total of 21 runs in both the innings and India end up losing the match by 72 runs. In the first inning of second Test, Sharma once again disappointed the cricket fans, as he was sent back to pavilion at the score of 10 runs by South African pacer Kagiso Rabada.

Abbott Mount: Social media bringing footfalls to ‘haunted mansion’ of British era

Raju Gusain | Dehradun |

A remote place in Uttarakhand continues to remain in media glare for a ‘haunted house’. The interest of TV news and documentary filmmakers have made Abbott Mount, at Lohaghat in Champawat district, famous. Many term the house among the top ten unsolved mysteries. Now, social media has come in for aid of the ghost mansion and is helping people to fight the fear factor.

These days a big number of tourists visit Abbott Mount – that is home to over a dozen families. A sports field on the top of the village provides panoramic view of the Himalayas. But, among all the Abbott Mount is known for the mansion. Local resident Salim Javed says, “A hospital by Doctor Morris used to operate from the building in the past. My father, who passed away in 1985, used to tell us stories about the glory of the hospital. It was considered one of the biggest hospitals in entire Lohaghat area.”

It is believed that the Morris Hospital was established in early 1900s. The place has all the ingredients — a haunted hospital, a neglected church and a graveyard — to create curiosity. Villagers tell the tourists about the supernatural forces operating during the night. The ghost stories used to keep people away from the mansion! But, off late, tourists have started invading the spookiest place. Earlier, they used to watch the hospital from a distance, but now visitors enter the premises to make videos and take photographs.

The social media publicity has turned Abbott Mount a popular tourist destination with a large number of youth visiting the place on weekends. It has also helped the place break the fear barrier. Local resident Girish Kunwar says, “Big curiosity prevails among tourists about the building. With tourists posting videos and photographs on the social media, it has become famous.”

More than the hospital, Dr Morris became famous for conducting experiments on his patients suffering from fatal diseases. The Doctor from Abbott Mount established a special ward called ‘Mukti Kothri’ where he used to shift his seriously ill patients. Many say that Morris used to predict even the death of patients. There are many stories about the doctor and hospital of Abbott Mount.

English men John Harold Abbott established the hill station in the British era. He wanted a retreat from the tiresome life of the plains. Though this was established during the early part of the 20th century, but it has succeeded in keeping its identity till now. Abbott Mount is a hot spot among picnickers. Now even the Kumoan Mandal Vikas Nigam, a unit of Uttarakhand government, has recognised the tourism potential of the area and has established a guest house there. The guest house is likely to become operational soon.

Orange passport will be discriminatory: Oommen Chandy

IANS | Thiruvananthapuram |

Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Monday strongly condemned the proposed move by the Centre to come out with an orange colour passports for those who have not passed their Class 10 examination, calling it discriminatory.

“No way this proposal should go forward. This is creating two different types of citizens, one with education and one without, discriminating Indians based on educational qualifications,” said Chandy.

“If this becomes a reality, the moment an orange colour passport holder lands in a foreign country, he will be treated with disdain and it will have a telling impact on such people’s character and individuality. This should not happen at all.”

He said many of our countrymen toil hard in extreme conditions in various Middle East countries and it’s through their hard work and their remittances that help the state and the country to progress.

S. Irudayarajan, head of the migration department at the Centre for Development Studies here, also denounced the proposed move.

“If in Kerala, according to our studies, around 15 per cent of the 2.5 million Kerala diaspora haven’t qualified Class 10, in other big states it would be more than 50 per cent .

“Dividing citizens based on education is the last thing that should happen in our country and it should be dropped.”

12,000 flee as Philippines warns of volcano eruption

AFP | Legazpi (Philippines) |

The crater of a rumbling Philippine volcano was glowing bright red on Monday, with vulcanologists warning it could erupt within days, sending thousands fleeing from their homes.

Volcanic earthquakes and rockfalls have shaken the summit of Mayon over the last 24 hours, after a number of steam- driven eruptions, scientists said.

More than 12,000 people have been ordered to leave a seven-kilometre (four-mile) evacuation zone, and there are warnings of destructive mudflows and toxic clouds.

“It is dangerous for families to stay in that radius and inhale ash,” Claudio Yucot, head of the region’s office of civil defence, told AFP.

“Because of continuous rains in past weeks, debris deposited in the slopes of Mayon could lead to lahar flows. If rain does not stop it could be hazardous.”

Lahar is the technical term for volcanic mudflows.

The volcano, a near-perfect cone, sits around 330 kilometres southwest of Manila.

Steam-driven eruptions and rockfalls began over the weekend, and the crater began glowing on Sunday evening, in what the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said was a sign of the growth of a new lava dome.

Lava last flowed out of Mayon in 2014 when 63,000 people fled from their homes.

“We think the lava now is more fluid than in 2014. This means the flow can reach further down (the slopes) at a faster rate,” Phivolcs head Renato Solidum told AFP.

“We see similarity with eruptions where the first phase of the activity started with lava flow and culminated in an explosive or hazardous part. That’s what we are trying to monitor and help people avoid.”

The 2,460-metre (8,070-foot) Mayon, has a long history of deadly eruptions.

Four foreign tourists and their local tour guide were killed when Mayon last erupted, in May 2013.

In 1814 more than 1,200 people were killed when lava flows buried the town of Cagsawa.

An explosion in August 2006 did not directly kill anyone, but four months later a typhoon unleashed an avalanche of volcanic mud from Mayon’s slopes that claimed 1,000 lives.

Rajnath lauds security forces for killing 5 JeM terrorists in J-K

SNS | New Delhi |

Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday congratulated the security forces for gunning down six terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector.

“I congratulate our security forces,” Rajnath Singh told reporters as militants from JeM’s suicide squad were killed near the Line of Control (LoC) in a joint operation by Jammu and Kashmir Police, army and paramilitary forces.

Defence spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said a group of militants was spotted infiltrating from Pakistan into India near Dulanja area of border town Uri — some 120 km from here.

The infiltrating militants opened fire at the forces, ensuing into a fierce gun battle that left five militants dead, Col Kalia said.

Director General of Police SP Vaid tweeted about the operation and said four “suicidal JeM terrorists were killed in Dulanja while infiltrating, in a joint operation by (Jammu and Kashmir) Police, army and (central armed police forces) CAPF”.

“Keep up the good work,” he lauded the forces.

Police sources here said all the slain militants were Pakistan nationals.

Jane Austen desi-style: A Pakistani perspective on ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and more

IANS |

Title: Austenistan

Author: Laaleen Sukhera (editor)

Publisher: Bloomsbury India Publishers

Pages: 288

Price Rs 350

The heroines, living (or aspiring) to settle into stately homes in the class-conscious society of Regency Britain, as we meet in classical literature, may seem far distant in time, space and social mores to their contemporary counterparts in metropolitan Pakistan. But what if they turn out to be sisters under the skin?

Could Elizabeth Bennet (of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”), or even her mother, have their equivalents in Islamabad, or Lady Susan (the heroine of Austen’s eponymous novel) be as likely to be found in Lahore as London? And then to be gender-balanced, can Darcy Fitzwilliam only thrive in English climes?

Quite possibly, for “it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”. Pakistani women — and their mothers and close friends — know this truth very well, as Laaleen Sukhera and her Pakistani (and one Sri Lankan) collaborators show in this anthology.

The reason for Austen’s global popularity is not so difficult to ascertain given she was writing about women’s dependence on an advantageous marriage for social standing and economic security, but also not negating love fully — which can be seen in patriarchal societies, like in the South Asian subcontinent.

As Caroline Jane Knight, a descendant of Jane’s brother and founder of the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation, notes, in the foreword, that in “some countries readers experience similar predicaments to the women in Jane’s novels, with limited rights, independence and earning opportunities”. “Others can relate to the social norms and family expectations around the finding of a suitable husband!”

While these are universal sentiments that readers may find familiar, credit goes to Sukhera, a Lahore-based media professional and founder of the Jane Austen Society of Pakistan, for adapting these immortal classics to “desi” conditions and sensibilities.

“Pride and Prejudice” takes the lion’s share, inspiring five of these seven stories — identified for readers who have not read or forgotten Austen, with a telling quote from the work in question. Also, Sukhera and the others also work in digital devices, social media, and other appurtenances, that life now seems incomplete without, to evoke a modern sensibility.

Lahore-based magazine editor and freelance journalist Mahlia S. Lone starts with a close approximation of “Pride and..” in “The Fabulous Banker Boys” which has, as its heart, a family matriarch’s attempts to arrange suitable matrimonial alliances for her brood. The point of view shifts to her second daughter Elisha, who has “bucket-loads of independence, spirit and a strong personality”, at a high-profile wedding they are attending where the targeted suitor, the proud-seeming Faiz Dar (the name is indicative) steps in to save her young sibling from an unsavoury situation.

“Pride..” also underlies “Only the Deepest Love” of Lahore-based freelance journalist Sonya Rehman, with some typical — and not so typically exclusive — Pakistani motifs and a range of twists down till the end. It also inspires the poignant “The Autumn Ball” by Sri Lankan scientist Gayathri Warnasuriya, which moves closer to Austen territory by including a ball instead of the Bollywood-bhangra dances in the rest, though the event doesn’t go the way its protagonist Maya may have liked.

Pakistani-American Nida Elley’s “Begum Saira Returns” is a sensuous adaptation of “Lady Susan”, with bittersweet motifs of loneliness and second opportunities for love for a not-so-old widow, and so is economist Mishayl Naek’s “Emaan Ever After”, a take on “Emma”.

But standing out — and both “Pride..”-inspired — are barrister Saniyya Gauhar’s hilarious but heart-warming “The Mughal Empire” about a high society doyenne left in the cold when her brother’s best friend (whom she had her eye on) marries a social climber, and Sukhera’s own “On the Verge”, which takes a society event blogger into Austen’s own territory — a English manor house — where she meets a “Prince Charming” she never expected.

Packed with high society weddings, supportive friends (both male and female), manipulative relatives and rivals, and a gamut of bon mots on contemporary Pakistani life, like “socialising in Islamabad is dead by boredom” and “Being thirty-two and divorced in Karachi requires your dermatologist and personal trainer on speed dial”, this is a work that is not only a tribute to Jane Austen, but literature at its most inspired. Thus, it will not only appeal to more than just her fans or romance aficionados.

Palestinian president calls Trump peace offer ‘slap of the century’

AFP | Ramallah (Palestinian Territories) |

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas denounced US President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace efforts as the “slap of the century” on Monday after the White House recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Abbas also said Israel had “ended” the landmark Oslo peace accords of the 1990s with its actions, while branding the US ambassadors to the UN and to Israel, Nikki Haley and David Friedman, a “disgrace”.

“We said ‘no’ to Trump, ‘we will not accept your project’,” Abbas said at the start of a key meeting of Palestinian leaders on how to face Trump’s declaration.

“The deal of the century is the slap of the century and we will not accept it,” he added, referring to Trump’s pledge to reach the “ultimate deal” — Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Abbas made his comments at the opening ceremony of the meeting taking place today and tomorrow in a marathon speech that lasted some two hours.

The meeting was called in the wake of Trump’s December 6 declaration on Jerusalem that deeply angered the Palestinians.

Abbas had previously said the United States could no longer play any role in the Middle East peace process after Trump’s move.

Today, he said the Palestinians were calling for an internationally led process in which the United States was not the mediator.

He said the Ramallah meeting must take decisions on how to move forward.

“I am saying that Oslo, there is no Oslo,” Abbas said, referring to the agreements that led to the creation of the Palestinian Authority and envisioned a final resolution to the conflict.

How to work on loopholes of destination wedding

Destination weddings are getting popular, but there are a few things that can spoil the idea before you actually plan for it.

IANS | New Delhi |

Destination weddings are getting popular, but there are a few things that can spoil the idea before you actually plan for it, say experts.

Aashmeen Munjaal and Meha Bhargava, list down some aspects to keep in mind while planning a destination wedding.

* Communication: If you are planning a wedding in Italy, France, Japan, Spain or Germany, then communication with native people can be a limitation. To break that, have a mediator.

* Cuisine: If you are planning a wedding in India or abroad, choosing the right cuisine is a limitation that needs to be taken into consideration. For example, if the wedding is outside India and you would like to have traditional cuisine, then you have to take the vendor from India (depending on where you are going) and have to do all necessary arrangements.

In India, if you would like to have all the cuisine from different states of India, you have to call the experts from all over India and do the necessary arrangement for them and take necessary permissions from the local authorities, if required.

* Designer: Choosing the right designer is important. There are a lot of designers who can customise the outfit according to various occasions. You have to choose the right one to give the best outfit in your budget.

* Make-up: Make-up is another factor for destination wedding. You have to be very selective while choosing your make-up artist, picking a look according to the weather conditions and deciding on the make-up that suits you well.

* Unfamiliarity with the wedding destination: If you have always adored the idea of having a wedding in a specific way, and you are not ready to negotiate on that dream at all, it is important to know everything about the destination.

* Cost factor: You should expect a lot of guests to back out due to the commuting cost. It is not just about the cost only, but the distance and time they have to invest in travelling. So, there are chances that they might back out at the last moment. Be prepared for it.
