Man gunned down in Delhi gang war

IANS | New Delhi |

A 30-year-old man who was buying some food items from a shop near Rohini Court, was gunned down on Monday by four attackers, police said, terming the incident part of a “gang war”.

Police said the incident occurred at around 2 p.m in Prashant Vihar area of Rohini in north Delhi when Ravi Bhardwaj, along with his friend, had come to meet a lawyer in Rohini court.

“Bhardwaj later came out from court with his friend and went to take food items from a shop in Prashant Vihar area. While he was packing the food, four unknown attackers in a Honda City car stopped near him and started firing indiscriminately at him,” a senior police officer said.

“The attackers only stopped firing after being satisfied he was dead. They also fired into the sky before escaping from the spot. Bhardwaj’s friend informed the police and he was taken to nearby Ambedkar hospital where doctors declared him dead.

“On the statement of his friend, a case of murder has been registered against a ganster, Gogi and three unknown persons. The entire crime was recorded in CCTV footage and efforts are on to ascertain the identities of accused attackers,” he added.

“Prima facie it appears to be a possible case of ongoing gang-war between two active gangs ‘Tillu gang and Gogi gang’ over some previous animosity in west Delhi. Bhardwaj had good contact with Tillu gang. His friend, in his complaint, named Jitender alias Gogi of being involved in the murder him with his three other accomplices,” the officer added.

ONGC chopper crash: Seventh body found, police lodge accident case

IANS | Mumbai |

Police on Monday registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the Pawan Hans helicopter crash of Saturday which killed five senior ONGC personnel besides two pilots, a police official said here.

Meanwhile, on the third day of search in the high seas, the rescuers located the last remaining body – of the missing pilot, an Indian Coast Guard spokesperson said today.

Earlier the rescue teams of Indian Navy and the Coast Guard had recovered six bodies on Saturday, including the five ONGC deputy general managers who perished and one of the pilots.

ICG ship Samrat found the pilot’s body while ONGC vessel Samudra Sevak in the crash site recovered more debris of the crashed Dauphin helicopter, including rotor blades, main gearbox, tail gear box, both engines, emergency locator transmitter and other items from the Arabian Sea.

A high-level ONGC team met top Coast Guard officials to assess the situation arising out of the tragedy and formulate a further strategy for the recovery of the debris of the crashed chopper and parts of the victims’ bodies, if any.

After registering a case at the Santacruz Police Station, it was transferred to the Yellowgate Police Station in south Mumbai for further action, said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Port Zone, Rashmi Karandikar.

She said that after the detailed investigations are complete, Mumbai police will submit its probe report to the central and state governments.

Officials said though the helicopter took from Juhu Airport which is under the jurisdiction of the Santacruz Police Station, it has been transferred to Yellowgate Police which exclusively handles investigations into all sea-related cases and off-shore incidents.

On January 13 morning, the PHL chopper crashed after it went missing from the radars barely 15 minutes after take-off from Juhu Airport while on a regular sortie to ferry the ONGC personnel to the Bombay High gas-oil fields, around 175 kms from here.

According to available information, the chopper had been recently inspected and was carrying more than three hours of fuel onboard when it took off at 10.14 am.

As per established procedures, the pilots changed their radio contact from Juhu ATC to a control manned from the ONGC oil rig at around 10.25 am, and remained in touch with the oil rig control for about two minutes or 10 kms before the chopper lost all contact with surface when it was around 55 kms from Mumbai over the high seas.

The chopper was expected to land at one of the oil platforms around 11 am, which it never did.

Netanyahu visit: Indian-Israeli delegates bond over ‘Ichak dana bichak dana’

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

While many in India may have forgotten the popular Hindi song of 1955 ‘’Ichak dana bichak dana’’ from the Raj Kapoor directed ‘Shri 420’, it is still extremely popular in Israel.

The song was one of the music items played at the luncheon banquet hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in honour of his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and the latter’s delegation at the Hyderabad House.

Many in the Israeli delegation immediately pointed out to members of the Indian delegation that they knew the song and keep hearing it regularly back home in Israel. ‘’Several Israeli delegates immediately recognised the track and the Indians present there marvelled at this shared cultural experience,’’ according to Vijay Gokhale, Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry who would soon take charge as Foreign Secretary.

Indian movies were a regular fixture in Israel in early days. They were often dubbed in Hebrew or Russian.

In view of the popularity of Bollywood films and songs, Israel also signed with India a pact for cooperation in film production. MEA officials said the pact was ‘exploratory in nature’ for mutual cooperation in filmmaking.

During his ongoing India visit, the Israeli PM will also be visiting Mumbai to meet top Bollywood directors, producers and actors for exploring the possibility of co-production of films.

Hyderabad beat Bengaluru to claim maiden title in PBL

Mixed Doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Pia Bernadet put up a dominant display in the last match of the encounter to clinch the the title.

PTI | Hyderabad |

Hyderabad Hunters overcame a fighting Bengaluru Blasters 4-3 in a thrilling summit clash to claim their maiden title at the third Premier Badminton League (PBL) here on Monday.

Mixed Doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Pia Bernadet put up a dominant display in the last match of the encounter to clinch the the title and the winners’ prize purse for the Hunters.

Cheered on by a packed house and a vociferous team at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Satwik and Pia beat Kim Sa Rang (Korea) and N Sikki Reddy (India) 15-11, 15-12.

The tall Satwiksairaj unleashed an array of powerful strokes to set up a well-deserved victory for the home side.

The five-match duel turned out to be a pulsating affair with the Blasters’ World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen and the Hunters’ Olympic champion Carlina Marin winning their respective matches to make it 3-3 after the first four matches.

The Hunters began on the back foot, with their men’s doubles pair of Markis Kido and Yoo Yeon Seong failing to get into their groove and losing the first point.

They found the Blasters’ Mathias Boe and Kim Sa Rang too hot to handle and gave in 0-2 without much of a fight. The stout Kido, who had controlled the game from the back of the court, just couldn’t make his powerful smashes work.

It didn’t help that his understanding with his partner Yoo Yeon was not top notch, allowing their opponents to exploit vast open spaces in the court.

The Hunters came back into the tie strongly, with their Trump player Lee Hyun Il coming up with a near immaculate game. The Korean was calm personified, dictating the pace and tone of the match to beat Subhanker Dey 2-0.

Lee Hyun, a southpaw, defended brilliantly, receiving everything that Subhanker threw at him. He kept the rallies going long until he found the perfect shot to finish off the point.

He shot away to a 4-2 and 8-5 lead even as Subhanker was trying to figure him out. Lee Hyun rode on the momentum to take the opening game 15-7.

The Korean fell behind at the start of the game, making a few unforced errors. He, however, fought back from 0-2 and 1-4 down to jump into the lead at 6-4.

He seemed to be cruising at 9-6 but his concentration wavered and he gave away a couple of easy points.

Subhanker took advantage of the lapses to catch him at 10-10. Lee Hyun inched ahead 12-10 but saw him by his side at 13-13 again. The experienced shuttler then produced two winners to seal the game and match 15-13.

Axelsen then demolished Sai Praneeth to win his Trump match and give his side a slight edge. He played with authority to win the third match 15-5, 15-10.

The Blasters were 2-1 (3-2) on points at the midway stage. But former World No. 1 Marin promptly regained the initiative for the Hunters, winning the women’s singles match against Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour 15-8, 15-14.

Marin played a smart and controlled game and staved off a major scare when Kirsty had fought back from 4-8 down to make it 11-9 at one stage. She stayed cool and regained the lead, and kept her nerve over the next few points to win the clash.

U19 World Cup: Easy victories for England, Bangladesh

Batting first, Namibia could only manage a modest 196/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

IANS |

England and Bangladesh registered comfortable victories in their respective Group C matches at the ICC U19 World Cup on Monday.

England rode on superb batting by Will Jacks and Harry Brook to thrash Namibia by eight wickets at the Queenstown Events Centre here.

Batting first, Namibia could only manage a modest 196/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Jacks and Brook then produced a 130-run partnership to help England overhaul the target in just 24.1 overs.

Jacks remained unbeaten on 73 runs, with 12 boundaries an a six studding his 44-ball innings. Brook was not out on 59, hitting 12 boundaries over the course of his 48-ball stint in the middle.

The Namibia batsmen did reasonably well against the strong England bowling.

Their openers Jurgen Linde and Lohan Louwrens gave them a steady start before solid knocks from Sam Fouche, Petrus Burger and Nicol Loftie-Eaton helped overcome stagnation in the middle order.

But Namibia’s inability to capitalise on a reasonable start proved costly in the end.

Leg-spinner Luke Hollman was the most successful among the England bowlers with figures of 3/41 in his 10 overs. Brook and Tom Scriven bagged two wickets each.

England had a steady start to their chase with their openers Savin Perera and Tom Banton scoring 55 runs between off eight overs.

Fast bowler Gerhard Lottering rekindled Namibian hopes with two wickets in back to back overs.

Banton was the first to go when he a delivery onto his stumps. Perera was dismissed in Lottering’s next over when he mistimed a pull and was caught at square leg.

Brook and Jacks then came together to produced some attacking batting and carry England to victory.

The duo found the boundary in almost every over while the Namibia bowlers did not exactly help their team’s cause by giving away 19 runs as extras.

Meanwhile in Christchurch, Bangladesh defeated Canada by 66 runs.

Batting first, Bangladesh rode on a century by Towhid Hridoy to post 264/8 in their 50 overs before dismissing Canada for 198.

Off-spinner Afif Hossain spearheaded the Bangladesh bowling with figures of 5/43.

Asked to bat first, Bangladesh endured a rocky start as Canada pacer Faisal Jamkhandi sent back opener Pinak Ghosh and skipper Saif Hassan within the first eight overs.

Hridoy then strode in and proceeded to take control of the situation with a steady 122 off 126 deliveries, hitting nine boundaries and a six along the way.

He produced a partnership of 62 runs with opener Mohammed Naim Sheikh, before the latter was dismissed by Canada off-spinner Rommel Shahzad.

Hridoy then added 111 runs along with Afif Hossain to put Bangladesh on a firm footing.

In reply, Canada were off to a slow start before losing wickets at regular intervals.

A steady 108-ball 63 by Arslan Khan was the lone bright spark in the Canadian batting effort as the rest of their batsmen failed to get going.

Brief scores:

Namibia: 196/9 in 50 overs (Shaun Fouche 44, Nicol Loftie-Eaton 36; Luke Hollman 3/41, Tom Scriven 2/30, Harry Brook 2/32) vs England: 198/2 in 24.1 overs (Will Jacks 73 not out, Harry Brook 59 not out; Gerhard Lottering 2/33).

Bangladesh: 264/8 in 50 overs (Hridoy 122, Afif 50; Jamkhandi 5/48) vs Canada: 198 in 49.3 overs (Arslan Khan 63; Afif Hossain 5/43).

Vandeweghe has ‘banana drama’ at Australian Open

After going down in the first set 6-7 (4-7) in a gripping tie-break, Vandeweghe requested some courtside fruit.

IANS | Melbourne |

Fiery American tennis player CoCo Vandeweghe had a bizarre moment during her straight sets loss to Hungary’s Timea Babos in the women’s singles first round at the Australian Open here on Monday.

The women’s World No.9 received a time violation for waiting “too long” for a banana mid-way through the match, reports.

After going down in the first set 6-7 (4-7) in a gripping tie-break, Vandeweghe requested some courtside fruit.

“I asked for a banana at the end of the set and they didn’t have any on court,” she said.

“So I tried to wait for it but the chair umpire deemed that it was not a good enough reason to wait and he gave me a time violation for trying to wait for a banana.”

When the match resumed, Babos dominated play and took the second set at 6-2.

Although the first round exit was considered a huge shock after the 26-year-old made the semi-finals of the tournament last year, Vandeweghe explained she had been suffering from illness in the lead up to the match.

“I’ve had the flu since about (last) Sunday,” Vandeweghe said.

“It’s the first time I have been out of bed in four days. I tried my best… but she played really well.”
