Pat Cummins replaces injured Mitchell Starc in Australian squad

Starc was forced out of the India-Australia series due to a stress fracture to his foot.

PTI | Ranchi |

Paceman Patrick Cummins has replaced injured Mitchell Starc in the Australian squad for the remainder of the Test series against India, Cricket Australia announced on Saturday.

Starc was forced out of the series due to a stress fracture to his foot.

Cummins has played only one Test in his career. Competing against South Africa in 2011, he took seven wickets, including six for 79 in the second innings to shape Australia's close two-wicket win.

"It's unfortunate to lose Mitch out of the squad in India. In selecting Pat, we were looking for a strike bowling replacement option," National Selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement.

"Pat has impressed in his return to cricket this summer with consistent performances in his ODI, Twenty20 International and Big Bash matches. He has also had a very good Sheffield Shield return for New South Wales, after six years off, where he made a notable Shield best 4-57 in the first innings, before bettering those figures in the second innings with 4-47 in his man-of-the-match performance," Hohns concluded.

Cummins will join the Australian squad on Saturday. The third Test begins on Thursday.

11 CRPF personnel killed in Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh

Eleven Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed on Saturday when Naxals ambushed a road opening party of the security forces in Maoist-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, police said.

Five jawans were also injured in the attack that took place in the dense forests of Bhejji police station limits at 9:15 am when a patrol party of CRPF's 219 battalion was out for a road opening task near Kotacheru village.

112 security personnel were part of the patrol party.

The Naxals also looted ten weapons and two radio sets from the killed men, officials said.

A senior official said that the road opening party (ROP) of CRPF's 219th battalion was on an operation to ensure security to a patch on the under-construction Injram-Bhejji road, around 450 kms away from the state capital.

While the ROP was passing through the forests between Bhejji and Kottacheru villages, Naxals opened indiscriminate fire on them, he said.

Officials said the security personnel were first trapped in multiple Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts followed by ambush with heavy gunfire.

Additional forces have been rushed to the spot and the bodies of the deceased are being retrieved, he added.

The injured have been air lifted and brought to the CRPF field hospital in Bheji.

A special CoBRA team has been rushed in as a reinforcement.

No question of Rahul stepping down, says Digvijaya Singh

SNS | New Delhi |

Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh on Saturday said there was no question of party Vice President Rahul Gandhi stepping down from the party's leadership, in the wake of poor showing in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

"There is no question of Rahul Gandhi stepping down," said Singh in reply to media queries about change in the Congress top leadership.

"The Nehru-Gandhi family is the greatest binding factor for the Congress and the leadership has to come to Rahul," he added.

With the BJP surging towards a decisive victory both in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Singh admitted that the Congress party needed to build regional leaders.

"I have said this earlier also that we need to build up new leadership in states. We have to take decisive action to build up the party where we do not have strong regional leaders," added Singh.

BJP has won with a massive margin in Uttar Pradesh of over 300, with the SP-Cong alliance trailing by just 70 seats. Many are touting this as Narendra Modi’s biggest win after the 2014 election.

Congress is however poised to win in Punjab, and is ahead in Manipur and Goa.

Adele defends Justin Bieber after her fans boos him

PTI | Sydney |

During the show at ANZ Stadium here in Australia, the 28-year-old singer asked if anyone would be attending Bieber's concert being held at the same spot next week when crowd started booing, reported Cosmopolitan magazine.

"He's only a kid. I can't say you'd do much better if you were famous at 12 years old, shut up. I don't know him, I just feel bad for him most of the time, because everyone boos him," Adele responded.

The "Hello" hitmaker kicked off her tour in February 2016 and has been doing shows in Australia since February 28 this year.

Indian Wells: Kyle Edmund sets up date with Novak Djokovic

Djokovic is hoping a return to California's hard courts, where has enjoyed success, will signal a revival.

AFP | Indian Wells |

Briton Kyle Edmund cruised into an Indian Wells ATP Masters meeting with three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic on Friday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Portugal's Gastao Elias.

Edmund, ranked 46th in the world, needed just 65 minutes to get past the 95th-ranked Elias and line up a third career meeting with Djokovic, a five-time winner at Indian Wells who is seeded second this year behind world number one Andy Murray of Britain.

"The things (Djokovic) does well are making a lot of balls and being quick around the court. It's tough to get the ball by him and break him down," said Edmund, who lost to the Serb star at the Miami Masters and US Open in 2016. "These are things that I've experienced the last two times I've played him. I'll try and use that on Sunday."

Djokovic is hoping a return to the hard courts of California — where has enjoyed such success — will signal a revival.

After a lacklustre end to 2016 that saw him surrender the world number one ranking to Murray, things appeared to be looking up with his victory in Qatar in January.

But a shock second-round exit at the Australian Open followed by a quarter-final loss in Acapulco have him back in rebuilding mode.

With 32 seeded players enjoying first-round byes, it was unseeded players jockeying for position on Friday.

US 19-year-old Taylor Fritz dispatched France's Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-2 to line up a meeting with third-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic.

Fritz, a Southern California native, kept his focus as injury contributed to some erratic play from Paire.

"My focus was just to serve, serve well, kind of just manage my service games, because I felt like I would get chances on his serve and I would just have to take them," said Fritz, who saved the only break point he faced in the 65-minute match.

"It was just a weird match, because the ankle or foot injury or issue he had in the beginning — sometimes he'd move really well, sometimes he wouldn't. Sometimes he would just double fault, sometimes he'd hit an ace."

A whirlwind 2016 saw Fritz climb as high as 53rd in the world last August, but he was slowed by a late season knee injury and arrived at Indian Wells ranked 136th in the world.

In addition to adjusting to full-time life on the tour, Fritz has been through momentous personal changes. He's a married father of an infant son, still trying to map his burgeoning career.

While he finds time spent with his son "amazing," Fritz is the first to admit that his wife, Raquel, is doing the heavy lifting when it comes to childcare.

"I'm not very hands-on at all, to be honest," he said.

Fritz, who broke a 13-match losing streak against top-50 opponents with his win over 40th-ranked Paire, was already turning his attention to former US Open champion Cilic.

"We're both pretty serve dependent," he said. "So I will be focusing on the key parts of my game, which is the serve and just staying aggressive, attacking, but not giving him too many free points."

In other matches, France's Stephane Robert defeated Israeli Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4 to book a meeting with ninth-seeded Roger Federer, a four-time Indian Wells winner who is riding high after capturing his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

Britain's Daniel Evans cruised past German Dustin Brown 6-1, 6-1 to secure a meeting with fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan.

Fish eyes may help find cure for blindness

IANS | New York |

Scientists have discovered a chemical in the zebra fish brain that helps reveal how it regrows its retina, a finding that can potentially cure blindness in humans.

The findings showed that the levels of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter, best known for its role of calming nervous activity — drop when the unique self repair process kicks in.

Thus, blocking the chemical (GABA) could lead to new treatments for AMD (age related macular degeneration), the most common cause of blindness and and retinitis pigmentosa.

The structure of the retinas (the light sensing tissue at the back of the eye) of fish and mammals are basically the same and a reduction in GABA might be the trigger for retinal regeneration, the researchers said.

"Our theory is that a drop in GABA concentration is the trigger for regeneration," said James Patton, Professor at Vanderbilt University, in Tennessee, US.

"If we are correct, then it might be possible to stimulate human retinas to repair themselves by treating them with a GABA inhibitor," Patton added.

In the study, when the scientists injected drugs that kept GABA concentrations in the retinas of newly blinded fish at a high level, they found it suppressed the regeneration process.

After injecting an enzyme that lowers GABA levels in normal fish, they found that the Muller glia (retinal cells) began changing and proliferating, the first stage in the regeneration process.

The Muller glia (which in fish play a key role in regeneration) is a special type of adult stem cell.

When regeneration is triggered in zebrafish, the Muller glia begins proliferating and then differentiating into replacements for the damaged nerve cells.

UP voters rose above caste for BJP win: Jitendra Singh

IANS | New Delhi |

Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh on Saturday said the BJP's cruising to victory in Uttar Pradesh was an indication that voters in the state have risen above caste for the first time.

"The most important consequence of this is for the first time we are seeing voters rising above caste and creed considerations and voting for development. This also reflects that voters have moved away from the feudalistic mindset which has influenced voters for generations," said Singh.

Taking a jibe at the Congress, Singh said the party needed to come out of its dynasty politics to stay relevant.

"The country's youth, our voters are coming of age. They are growing wiser than many of the politicians.

"Sooner or later the Congress itself will realise that in order to play a substantial role in politics, to stay relevant, it will have to come out of dynasty politics.

"The results today are a clear and loud message that crisis of leadership is a natural consequence of dynasty politics which has now lived its life. The Congress has stuck to dynasty succession irrespective of the merit and aptitude of the succeeding generation," added Singh.

Pakistan summons Indian envoy over Swami Aseemanand acquittal

IANS | Islamabad |

Pakistan on Saturday summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner to express concern over the acquittal of RSS leader Swami Aseemanand in the 2007 Ajmer Sharif blast case.

JP Singh was summoned on Friday night, Dawn news reported.

On Wednesday, a special court acquitted Swami Aseemanand and six others in the 2007 Ajmer Dargah blast case, giving them the "benefit of doubt". The bombing killed three people and left at least 15 others injured.

Aseemanand is also accused of masterminding the deadly 2007 Samjhota Express bombing that killed 68 people, most of them Pakistanis.

"Swami Aseemanand had publicly confessed that he was the 'mastermind' of Samjhota Express terrorist attack of February 2007," the statement released by the Foreign Office said on Friday.

The statement added that Pakistan "expects India to take steps to bring to justice all those involved in the heinous act of Samjhota Express terrorist attack".
