Swiss Open: SH Prannoy crashes out in quarters

The mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy also suffered a 19-21 17-21 loss.

It was curtains for India at the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold after defending champion H S Prannoy was knocked out of the men's singles competition following a straight-game loss to China's Shi Yuqi in the quarterfinals of the $120,000 event here.

Fifth seed Prannoy, who had beaten Yuqi at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in 2016, failed to produce his best game and went down 19-21 11-21 to the second seeded Chinese, who had reached the finals at All England last week.

Earlier, fourth seeded Indian mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy also had suffered a 19-21 17-21 loss to fifth seeded Chinese duo of Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui.

The 21-year-old Yuqi, who had beaten Prannoy at the Indonesian Masters 2015, opened a slender 11-9 lead at the break of the opening game. The Indian then surged to a 18-13 advantage only to let the Chinese claw his way back to pocket the first game.

In the second game, Yuqi was more dominant as he broke off at 7-7 to distance himself from the Indian and eventually seal his place in the semifinals without much ado.

Ready to come out of the woods: Hillary Clinton

PTI | Washington |

Hillary Clinton has said she is ready to "come out of the woods" and help the "divided" nation find common ground, five months after her shocking defeat in the US presidential polls to Donald Trump.

"Our country seems so divided right now. I do not believe that we can let political divides harden into personal divides," Clinton said yesterday in her keynote address to the Society of Irish Women's 19th annual St Patrick's Day Dinner.

"And we can't just ignore, or turn a cold shoulder to someone because they disagree with us politically," Clinton said in her few public appearances after her defeat to Trump in the presidential elections.

In an apparent reference to the current political climate, the 69-year-old former Secretary of State said that it is difficult to watch news these days.

"I'm like a lot of my friends right now, I have a hard time watching the news," she said.

"I am ready to come out of the woods and to help shine a light on what is already happening around kitchen tables, at dinners like this, to help draw strength that will enable everybody to keep going," Clinton said in her key note address in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the home town of her father.

After her November defeat, Clinton has rarely made public appearances.

Media reports said she is expected to come out in public quite often in the next few months.

"What can we do to try to bring people together and to try to find that common ground, even higher ground, sister, so that we listen to each other again and we know that we can make a difference? I'm not sure it will come out of Washington yet, but I think it can come out of Scranton.

Let's find ways to do that," she said.

Fireworks as Basit denies Pakistan supports terror

IANS | Mumbai |

India and Pakistan need to start a new journey and work together to fight terrorism and bring peace in the region, Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit said on Saturday, toeing the usual line of denialism about terror camps in his country.

Basit, faced with a barrage of questions at the IndiaToday Conclave here over alleged cross-border terrorism, advocated India-Pakistan talks over Siachen, Kashmir and other pending issues between the two countries.

"The time has come to introspect and to see how can we be constructive in building good relationship," Basit said, during a discussion "India Pakistan — Love Story or Hate Tale".

Former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan G. Parthasarathy was face to face with Basit during the over 30-minute talk that turned out to be a heated exchange between the two.

"There are no terror-training camps in Pakistan. Terrorism is one issue which is a common challenge for both the countries. We also need to discuss Siachen, Jammu and Kashmir," Basit told the audience.

Parthasarathy countered Basit's denial, reminding him of Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, world's most wanted terrorist, who was found living close to a military cantonment in a palatial house in Pakistan.

"…and they deny backing terror groups."

The former Indian diplomat said ex US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had told Pakistan "you can't nurture snakes in your backyard and expect them to bite only your neighbours".

"When they talk about being hit by terrorism they should remember they are responsible for it."

Basit said India-Pakistan ties suffered from trust deficit that needed to be addressed.

"Dealing with terrorism requires cooperation between both the nations. We need to deal with the issue of terrorism as well."

Parthasarathy said for better ties with Pakistan, India needed "to be reassured that nothing happens in the future and so, the borders should be sealed" to prevent terror incursion from across the country.

"It is an open secret that it is the military which takes decision in Pakistan and not the democratically elected government. As long as the military establishment calls the shots, there will be trouble."

Basit was asked about delayed trial of 2008 Mumbai terror attack. He said the case was subjudice and hoped "things would move forward".

"For that to happen there has to be a conducive environment. We need to sit across the table and discuss things, we can't expect action in vacuum

"I would request my Indian friends not to jump the gun. We need to assist our court in order to give justice…," Basit said.

Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund edge Inglostadt

With the result, Dortmund move within three points of runners-up Leipzig.

IANS | Berlin |

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the lone goal as Borussia Dortmund overcame relegation-threatened Ingolstadt 1-0 in the 25th round football opener of the German Bundesliga.

Second from bottom, Ingolstadt were resilient against third-placed Dortmund on Friday. Yet, the visitors failed to snatch points on the road, as they continued to be wasteful in front of the target, reports Xinhua news agency.

"BVB" returned to winning ways from an early goal as Bundesliga top striker Aubameyang broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when he tapped in a cross from Marcel Schmelzer to score his 23rd goal of the season.

Ingolstadt reacted with furious attacks, but were unable to beat the hosts' goalkeeper Roman Buerki who protected the narrow lead by defusing Mathew Leckie's header on target in the 19th minute.

The visitors worked out another opportunity but Alfredo Morales pulled wide from a promising position eight minutes later.

On the other hand, Thomas Tuchel's men remained dangerous on fast breaks but neither Christian Pulisic nor Erik Durm were able to finish off counter-attacks around the half-hour mark.

Ingolstadt should have restored parity before the break but for the fact that custodian Buerki was on guard to deny both Almog Cohen and Sonny Kittel from close range.

After the restart, Ingolstadt continued to press for the equaliser. However, despite a number of chances, the "Schanzer" were unable to overcome Dortmund's defence, especially goalie Buerki.

With the result, Dortmund move within three points of runners-up Leipzig while Ingolstadt remain on the 17th place, which is a direct relegation spot.

On Saturday, Werder Bremen host second-placed Leipzig, Cologne encounter Hertha Berlin, Wolfsburg see last-placed Darmstadt, Augsburg face Freiburg, Hoffenheim clash with Bayer Leverkusen and Frankfurt take on Hamburg.

New Zealand vs South Africa: Keshav Maharaj spins Proteas to 8-wkt win

Maharaj came up with figures of 6/40 to bundle New Zealand out for a meagre 171.

IANS | Wellington |

A career-best Test haul by slow left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj helped South Africa thrash New Zealand by eight wickets within three days of the second cricket Test at the Basin Reserve here on Saturday.

Maharaj came up with figures of 6/40 to bundle New Zealand out for a meagre 171 post the tea session in their second innings after the visitors earned a vital 91-run lead in the first essay.

In response, the Proteas lost little sweat to chase down the paltry 80-run target with Hashim Amla (38 not out) and Jean Paul Duminy (15 not out) forging a 35-run unbeaten third wicket stand.

The South Africans, however lost the opening duo of Stephen Cook (11) and Dean Elgar (17) in their chase.

Earlier, New Zealand's top order again struggled, slipping to 90/5, the last five wickets were whisked away for 16 runs in 36 deliveries.

The Kiwis' weakness to spin once again came to the fore after the middle and lower order batsmen succumbed to the slow left-armer's guile and spin on a ground not famed for the role of the slower bowlers.

While pacer Morne Morkel claimed two wickets in his opening spell, including Kane Williamson (1) for his second failure of the match, before Maharaj removed Henry Nicholls (7) and James Neesham (4) in the space of five deliveries with New Zealand still a run behind.

Opener Jeet Raval, who made a gusty career-best 80, got three lives before he was finally stumped by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.

Raval and stumper B.J. Watling (29) provided some resistance with a 65-run sixth wicket stand until tea but post that it was Maharaj's one-man show all the way.

South Africa's chase was without much difficulty although Cook completed two lean Tests when he edged to the slips while Elgar top-edged a swipe against Neil Wagner moments before the extra half hour was taken, leaving Amla and Duminy to complete the formalities and give the Proteas a 1-0 lead before heading to Hamilton.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 268 and 171 (Jeet Raval 80, B.J. Watling 29, Keshav Maharaj 6/40) lose to South Africa 359 and 83/2 (Hashim Amla 38 not out) by eight wickets.

Trivendra Rawat is the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand

SNS | New Delhi |

A long-time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist Trivendra Singh Rawat on Saturday took oath as the ninth chief minister of Uttarakhand in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah in the state capital Dehradun.

Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul administered the oath of office .

Rawat took oath along with seven cabinet ministers and two state ministers.

A day ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Rawat met state Governor KK Paul and claimed support of 57 MLAs to form government.

Rawat was on Friday elected the leader of the BJP Legislature Party. He along with BJP MLAs and senior leaders reached Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form government in the state.

A former associate of PM Modi, Rawat was the Agriculture Minister in the previous BJP government in Uttarakhand.

Rawat, an organisational man of the BJP and party in-charge in Jharkhand, won Doiwala seat by defeating Congress' Hira Singh Bisht by over 24,000 votes.

Rawat is the fifth BJP chief minister in the state. The party formed its first government in the state in 2000 with Nityanand Swami as the first chief minister.

The Rawat cabinet is dominated by Congress rebels- who joined the BJP before the state assembly polls.

Satpal Maharaj, Harak Singh Rawat, Yashpal Arya and Subodh Uniyal were among the four ex-Congress leaders to get ministerial berths.

One Congress rebel Rekha Arya obtain state minister post. Three BJP leaders — Prakash Pant, Madan Kausik and Arvind Pandey — figured in the cabinet list.

Earlier speculation was rife that Satpal Maharaj will not accept the cabinet minister post. But, Maharaj surprised all by accepting the post. He was a frontrunner to the CM’s post this time. Even in 2014 when Congress decided to remove Vijay Bahuguna and make Harish Rawat the Chief Minister, Satpal objected to the party decision.
