Caitlyn Jenner done having sex with women

IANS | Los Angeles |

Reality TV personality Caitlyn Jenner says she will never have sex with a woman again.

The 67-year-old added that she might be willing to have sex with a man after undergoing gender reassignment surgery, which she first had in January.

In her new memoir titled The Secrets of My Life, Caitlyn — who famously transitioned from male athlete Bruce to female Caitlyn in 2015 — asserts that she has never considered sex a priority in her life, even as a man, reports radaronline.com.

Caitlyn writes: "Of the most important things in my life, sex is beyond the bottom; it has been that way for a long time. A future female companion? Yes, I do think about that. A future female sex companion? Not happening, at least for now, and perhaps not ever."

Though she has "never had the inclination" to have sex with men, Jenner admits she is open to the idea.

She added: "Maybe that attitude might possibly change if I have the final surgery. Maybe removing the last physical appendage of my maleness will make me feel differently."

Caitlyn's last relationship was with third wife Kris, who she divorced in 2015 after 14 years of marriage.

Not in talks to be Argentina coach: Diego Simeone

Speculation about a successor to Bauza has centred on Simeone and on Jorge Sampaoli.

IANS | Leicester |

Atletico Madrid chief coach Diego Simeone has denied any contacts with the Argentine Football Association about his taking charge of the national team.

"No, I haven't spoken with anybody from the AFA," he said on Monday in response to a question from reporters ahead of Atletico's Champions League quarter-final second-leg here against Leicester City, reports Efe.

The AFA dismissed coach Edgardo Bauza last week after Albiceleste — playing without the suspended Lionel Messi — lost a World Cup qualifier to Bolivia to fall out of the top four slots that ensure berths in the 2018 edition of the tournament.

Speculation about a successor to Bauza has centred on former Argentina captain and midfield star Simeone and on Jorge Sampaoli, currently coach of Sevilla, who sit just behind third-place Atletico in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid have won five trophies with Simeone at the helm, including the La Liga title and the UEFA Europa League. The club also reached the Champions League final in two of the last three seasons under Simeone.

IPL 2017: Never let success get into my head, says Mustafizur Rahman

Mustafizur displayed his variation of cutters in the Super 10 match against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens.

IANS | Kolkata |

Promising Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman — Fizz to friends — never lets success get to his head and says rather modestly that he would be happy to be remembered as a "good human being" if he does not make it to cricketing folklore, little realising he may have already reached there.

The shy, 21-year-old speedster who burst into limelight on debut in 2015 when India toured Bangladesh, is only the second player to have returned fivers in his first two One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

At 19, the wiry left-arm pacer with a tendency to thrive on off-cutters to reap dividends, made giant holes in the hallowed Indian batting line-up boasting of the likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane.

It was because of his 5-50 and 6-43 in his first two ODIs that once-minnows Bangladesh won those games and the three-match series, their first India haul.

Only Zimbabwe's Brian Vitori has two five-wicket hauls in his first two ODIs besides Fizz.

"I never let success get into my head. You guys keep asking me about being something big, great talent and so on… I am unfazed," Mustafizur told IANS during a one-on-one while plying his trade for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"If I cannot become a great cricketer, I will at least want to be remembered as a good human being," the soft-spoken, Khulna-born 21-year-old said.

In the World T20 last year, Mustafizur displayed his variation of cutters in the Super 10 match against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens, returning 5-22.

"In this format of the game (T20), you need variations. Every bowler will have his stock ball. But you need to vary your deliveries in order to get success," the off-cutter specialist said.

Known as a bowler who has a bagful of tricks and uses his variations tactfully, Mustafizur returned not the same bowler after shoulder surgery last August.

He wasn't impressive in New Zealand, where he got just one wicket, and was subsequently given a break, thereby staying out of action in the one-off Test against India in February.

"I was not fit for the series," Mustafizur promptly replied when asked whether he missed being part of the tie. Many reports have claimed that he was essentially not picked.

During Bangladesh's last tour of Sri Lanka, Mustafizur scalped eight wickets in two Tests, six in three ODIs and four in two T20 games.

"I am happy with my ODI bowling (against Sri Lanka). What I wanted was not happening and I could not get the ball in the right areas. The length was a problem too. In the last ODI, I was getting back my rhythm I thought, and T20s was fine I would say."

Picked in the auction last year by Sunrisers, Mustafizur is in his second season with the franchise.

"I don't have any target in mind. I always try to give my best and help my team win at the end of the day," he signed off.

17-year-old with heart defect gets new lease of life

IANS | New Delhi |

After years of struggle, 17-year-old Tushar, who was diagnosed with complex cyanotic heart disease when he was six, has now been successfully operated on at a hospital here, giving him a new lease of life.

The right side of his heart and the blood supply to his lungs were grossly abnormal. Moreover, he had a massive hole in his heart and the body was getting only deoxygenated blood, which is impure blood, Max Super Speciality Hospital at Shalimar Bagh said in a statement.

Under the guidance of Senior Cardiac Surgeon Dinesh Mittal, the team conducted CT scan and angiography to define the anatomy in details.

The surgery was highly complicated and time consuming. It took 22 hours to complete this complex procedure. After the surgery, Tushar's body received 100 per cent oxygen level. Though he was on ventilator for 15 days and took a month to recover fully, life has changed for the better for Tushar, the hospital added.

During the surgery, Tushar's breast bone was cut open and he was put on a cardiopulmonary machine. Gradually, the entire body was cooled down to 18 degree celsius. His abnormal arteries of lungs were re-fixed and blood circulation resumed.

The remaining procedure was completed on cardiopulmonary bypass. This technique temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery, maintaining the circulation of blood and the oxygen content of the patient's body, and is used during open heart surgery.

"Ninetyfive per cent of heart defects, especially in children, can usually be treated with medicine or surgery," Mittal said.

"Prevention is the best way to avoid a heart problem later in life," Mittal added.

Drake accuses club near Coachella of racial profiling

IANS | Mumbai |

Rapper Drake has accused a country club near Coachella of racial profiling, saying it was "the most offensive place" he ever visited.

The 30-year-old Hotline bling rapper took to Instagram on April 16 to lash out at The Madison Club, a private golf resort in La Quinta, reports people.com.

He posted a day after he made a surprise performance at the local music festival.

"The most offensive place I have ever stayed at in my life with staff who pick and choose who they are going to accommodate based on racial profiling #Coachella," Drake wrote in a post that has since been deleted.

The establishment issued an apology to Drake before he took down his post.

"We are trying to get this issue fixed as soon as possible," a representative for The Madison Club said in a statement.

"Customer satisfaction is our number one priority and for you to experience such a thing is embarrassing for us. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and we will be issuing out a formal apology to you and the public. We will also be investigating this as we do not tolerate racial discrimination."

Depopulate Kashmir Valley to curb protests: Swamy

IANS | New Delhi |

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday suggested that the troubled Kashmir Valley should be de-populated and Kashmiris sent to refugee camps in Tamil Nadu to curb protests in the state.

"Solution to (the) Kashmir Valley revolt is to depopulate as was done to Kashmir Valley Hindus. For a few years keep them in refugee camps in TN (Tamil Nadu)," Swamy tweeted, a day after university and college students across the valley clashed with security forces.

The valley has been on a boil and the government has ordered the temporary closure of all schools and colleges.

The fresh protests followed a sequence of recent poll-related violence in the state where eight people were killed in firing by security forces when people tried to storm polling stations in Budgam district.

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya arrested in London by Scotland Yard

Embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya was on Tuesday arrested by Scotland Yard in London. He will be presented before a court in Westminster.

Earlier in February, India had handed over a request for Mallya's extradition to the UK High Commission, saying it had a legitimate case against him in on charges of financial irregularities and loan default.

Mallya, who fled to Britain in March 2016 after being pursued in courts by banks seeking to recover about Rs.9,000 crore owed by his Kingfisher Airline, was charged with cheating and conspiracy by the CBI that filed a 1,000-page chargesheet against him.

New cells where HIV can persist identified

IANS | New York |

Researchers have identified a new type of cells in the body where HIV persists despite treatment, revealing a novel target for developing therapeutic intervention.

HIV cure research to date has focused on clearing the virus from T cells, a type of white blood cell that is an essential part of the immune system.

The new research, published in the journal Nature Medicine, showed that the virus can persist in HIV-infected macrophages.

Macrophages are large white blood cells found in tissues throughout the body including the liver, lung, bone marrow and brain.

"These results are paradigm changing because they demonstrate that cells other than T cells can serve as a reservoir for HIV," said lead author Jenna Honeycutt from University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US.

"The fact that HIV-infected macrophages can persist means that any possible therapeutic intervention to eradicate HIV might have to target two very different types of cells," Honeycutt said.

Macrophages are myeloid lineage cells that have been implicated in HIV pathogenesis and in the trafficking of virus into the brain.

For the experiment, the researchers used a humanised myeloid-only mouse (MoM) model devoid of T cells.

"This is the first report demonstrating that tissue macrophages can be infected and that they respond to antiretroviral therapy," Honeycutt said.

"In addition, we show that productively infected macrophages can persist despite ART (antiretroviral therapy); and most importantly, that they can reinitiate and sustain infection upon therapy interruption even in the absence of T cells — the major target of HIV infection," Honeycutt added.

The rsearchers said they next want to find out where in the body persistently infected macrophages reside during HIV treatment and how macrophages respond to possible therapeutic interventions aimed at eradicating HIV from the body.

Chris Brown accused of punching photographer

IANS | Miami |

Singer Chris Brown is under investigation by police for allegedly punching a photographer who was documenting his nightclub appearance in Tampa, Florida.

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter is believed to have been involved in a fight at nightclub Aja Channelside in the early hours of Monday, and was embroiled in the scuffle when the venue's in-house photographers kept trying to take pictures of him.

Potable water from air may be possible

IANS | Bengaluru |

New research promises a potential new technology for sustainable harvesting of drinking water — from air.

The atmosphere contains an estimated 13,000 trillion litres of water — equivalent to nearly 10 per cent of all fresh water present in lakes worldwide — that has remained untapped.

Now, a team of researchers in the US, including two of Indian origin, have developed a device that extracts potable water from ambient air using only sunlight as the energy source.

The solar-powered water harvester works even when relative humidity (RH) is as low as 20 per cent, the level common in arid areas and deserts of the world, the researchers report.

"This is a major breakthrough in the long-standing challenge of harvesting water from the air at low humidity," Omar Yaghi, chemistry professor at the University of California-Berkeley and one of the corresponding authors, told Nature India.

"The key development in our demonstration is that we used only ambient sunlight, with no electricity needed," Yaghi said. "This is a major improvement over most other air-water harvesting devices which require energy input and therefore are economically not viable."

"I believe this device will work well in most areas of India," Yaghi said. Largescale use of this device "can change the landscape of water utilisation in India, where sunlight is abundant", added co-author Sameer Rao, a post-doctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The heart of the new device — constructed at MIT — is a metal-organic framework (MOF) that belongs to a class of unique materials exhibiting extremely high porosity that Yaghi's team had pioneered in the 1990s at Berkeley.

"They have high affinity to water molecules to pull them out of ambient air, but do not hold on to them too tightly so that water can be concentrated and released with a slight temperature change (induced by sunlight)," Yaghi said. The adsorbed (as a thin film) water thus released is then stored by the device in a condenser.

The adsorption-desorption experiments performed in a RH-controlled chamber in the laboratory found the device was able to pull 2.8 litres of water from the air over a 12-hour period at RH levels as low as 20 per cent using one kilogram of MOF. Rooftop tests at MIT confirmed that the device works equally well outdoors.

The scientists found the experimental data to be in "good agreement" with a theoretical framework they had developed.

Yaghi said the daily quantity of harvested water can be scaled up by finding better MOF materials "with enhanced sorption capacity and high intra-crystalline diffusivity" that could absorb more water. The current MOF can absorb only 20 percent of its weight in water.

An official statement released about the solar water harvester said that while Yaghi and his team at Berkeley are at work improving their MOFs, Evelyn Wang, the other corresponding author who led the team at MIT, "continues to improve the harvesting system to produce more water".

It quoted Wang as saying: "We wanted to demonstrate that if you are cut off somewhere in the desert, you could survive because of this device."

Its developers hope their device, when commercialised, could help every household obtain the drinking water it needs out of the air using only the power of the sun.

"The social impact of this in India would be far-reaching," said Rao.

"It would enable greater success for government's grassroot level programmes seeking to increase literacy and education of women and children in villages" because they would be freed from the everyday job of fetching water for cooking and drinking.

How much would the solar water harvester cost?

"We have made the significant first step by building the demonstration model combining chemistry and engineering to show how it works," Yaghi said, adding: "The economic aspects as well as the production of these materials and devices are the obvious next step."

Accidental insurance cover to all residents of Haryana

Ranjeet Singh | Chandigarh |

In a major policy decision, the Haryana government on Tuesday has decided to provide accidental insurance cover to all residents of Haryana in the age group of 18 to 70 years under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana’ (PMSBY) Scheme. The premium would be reimbursed by the state government.

A decision to this effect was taken at the Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The sum insured would be Rs.2 lakh each in case of accidental death, and, in case of total and irrecoverable loss of both eyes or loss of use of both hands or feet or loss of sight of one eye and loss of use of hand or foot due to accident.

Similarly, it would be Rs.1 lakh in case of total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one eye and loss of use of one hand or foot due to accident. The scheme would be an accident insurance scheme with one year cover, renewable from year to year, offering accidental death and disability cover. The scheme would be offered through banks and administered through public sector general insurance companies and other general insurance companies.

All resident of Haryana having Aadhaar seeded saving bank accounts, in the age group of 18 to 70 years, would be entitled to join the scheme. Aadhaar would be the primary KYC for the bank account and insurance coverage. The cover would be for one-year period stretching from June 1 to May 31. Consent form to join, pay, auto-debit from the designated savings bank account on the prescribed forms will be required to be given by the beneficiary by May 31 of every year. However, applicants may give an indefinite or longer option for enrollment or auto-debit.

In the first instance, the premium of Rs.12 per annum will be deducted from the account holder’s savings bank account through ‘auto-debit’ facility in one instalment on or before June 1 of each annual coverage period under the scheme, which, in turn, will be reimbursed by the state by direct credit to the beneficiary account on receipt of information from bank.

The accident cover for the member would terminate on attaining the age of 70 years or closure of the account with the bank or insufficiency of balance at the time of renewal to keep the insurance in force.

Similarly, if the insurance cover is ceased due to any technical reasons, the risk cover will be suspended and reinstatement of risk cover will be at the sole discretion of insurance company. Participatory banks will deduct the premium amount in the same month when the auto-debit option is given, preferably in May of every year, and remit the amount due to the insurance company in the month itself.

With implementation of the PMSBY, the existing ‘Rajiv Gandhi Parivar Bima Yojana’ will have ceased from March 31, 2017. The date of commencement of the scheme will be June 1, 2016 and beneficiaries who have enrolled themselves during the year, that is, June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017, will be entitled to get the reimbursement of premium. The next annual renewal date would be each successive June 1 in subsequent years.

Indians can enter Russia’s far east without visa: Medvedev

IANS | Moscow |

Citizens of India are eligible to visit Russia's far east without visas, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said.

According to a TASS report, Medvedev said on Monday tourists and businessmen from 18 nations — India, the UAE, Algeria, Bahrain, Brunei, Iran, Qatar, China, North Korea, Kuwait, Morocco, Mexico, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Tunisia, Turkey and Japan — can visit the Russian far east without visas.

"I have approved the list of countries whose nationals can take advantage of the preferential regime. Businessmen and tourists will not need to undergo the traditional procedure of Russian visas receipt," the Prime Minister said.

It will be enough for foreigners "to enter their data on a special website in the internet," Medvedev said.

"We are proactively forming the modern infrastructure and creating special regimes in the Far East. The law on visits to the Vladivostok free port was approved in March," Medvedev said.

Cancellation of visa procedures for tourists and businessmen "will promote growth of investment and tourist attractiveness of the far east," he said.

The region will earn more money from tourist traffic growth, the Prime Minister added.

Eighteen countries from various regions selected by the reciprocity principle were included into the list, Medvedev said.

"This is not because these states are situated at a closer or longer distance — we are appropriately introducing bilateral agreements on visa-free travel for those ready to use such an approach for us," he was quoted as saying by TASS news agency.
