Brazilian goalie Bruno Fernandes convicted of murder ordered to return to jail

The 32-year-old's career has included spells at Atletico Mineiro, Corinthians and Flamengo.

IANS | Rio de Janeiro |

Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered footballer Bruno Fernandes to return to jail for the murder of his former girlfriend.

Bruno, as he is known in Brazil, was granted a writ of habeas corpus in February after serving less than seven years of a 22-year sentence for killing Eliza Samudio, reports Xinhua news agency.

A panel of judges voted to overturn the decision on Tuesday, citing "the hideous" nature of the crime, in which the goalkeeper is accused of mutilating Samudio's body and feeding it to dogs.

Bruno resumed his playing career in April, signing a two-year contract with Brazilian Serie B team Boa Esporte, just two weeks after his release from prison.

Bruno's habeas corpus – and his subsequent return to football – caused outrage in Brazil and raised questions about the country's justice system.

The 32-year-old's career has included spells at Atletico Mineiro, Corinthians and Flamengo. In 2009 he was captain of the Flamengo team that won the Serie A championship.

Modi to set poll pitch for BJP in HP

Archana Phull/SNS | Shimla |

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Shimla on 27 April will set the pitch for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run up to assembly polls, scheduled by the year end in Himachal Pradesh.

Modi will lend energy to BJP cadres at a crucial juncture, when there is much anxiety and confusion in ruling Congress over the ongoing investigation into corruption cases against chief minister(CM), Virbhadra Singh.

It’s Modi’s first party rally in state capital Shimla, and second in HP, after becoming the Prime Minister in May 2014.

He would address the rally on historic Ridge after launching ‘Udan’, a regional air connectivity scheme at Jubbarhatti airport.

Every time, Modi comes to the state, the BJP workers are excited. Like former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who considered HP as his second home, Modi too has an emotional bondage with this hill state, they feel.

The party men share that HP had brought a turning point in political life of Modi, who became CM of Gujarat after his successful stint as party incharge in the hill state from 1997 to 2001.

His strategies as party incharge in HP had made the BJP wrest power from Congress in 1998 despite tough situation then.

But what are the expectations?

“We don’t have to ask PM Modi for anything. He knows the pulse of Himachal and has already showered much concern on the state. He will do whatever he finds fit for the state,” said state vice president of BJP, Ganesh Dutt.

He lists Modi government’s major step to re-consider HP as special category state with finding in 90: 10 pattern, the liberal financial help in 14th finance commission, declaration of more than 50 national highways to improve road networking, air connectivity for tourism and grant of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as some important initiatives.

State Congress Chief, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, however, was critical of Modi’s performance. “What has Modi done for the state except for announcements? Where is his promise to increase import duty on apples and what about the Manali-Leh rail project? In HP, Modi is answerable to the purchase of land worth Rs 12 Crore by the state BJP in different districts for offices, including Shimla and Hamirpur (which already had BJP offices) just before de-monetisation,” he said. He said Modi’s rally would not have any impact in HP people here know the truth.

The state BJP chief, Satpal Singh Satti was however, said Modi’s visit will activate BJP cadres in the run up to polls. “His programme for ‘Udan’ was sudden, but the party wanted to make full use of it in view of elections ahead, so we kept a rally in Shimla,” he said.

In HP, all the four Lok Sabha MPs are of BJP.

Newly discovered ants species named after Radiohead

To honour their contributions to music and conservation efforts, a new species of ants has been named after English rock band, Radiohead.

Ana Jesovnik and Ted R Schultz of Washington's Smithsonian Institution's Ant Lab discovered three species of ants, while collecting data for a study in the Venezuelan Amazon, reported The Independent.

One of the species, Sericomyrmex radioheadi, was named after the upcoming Glastonbury headliner, as noted by Phys.org.

“We wanted to honour their music. But more importantly, we wanted to acknowledge the conservation efforts of the band members, especially in raising climate-change awareness,” said Jesovnik.

Earlier this month, a species of shrimp was named after Pink Floyd as the Synalpheus Pinkfloydi.

IPL 2017: Need to manage bowlers’ workload, says MI coach Shane Bond

Shane Bond gave the example of Sri Lanka's out-of-form pacer Lasith Malinga.

PTI | Mumbai |

Former New Zealand pacer and Mumbai Indians' bowling coach Shane Bond has said it is necessary manage the workload of bowlers considering the tight schedule of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

The former Kiwi seamer, who was one of the fastest bowlers of his times, gave the example of Sri Lanka's out-of-form pacer Lasith Malinga.

“There is a lot of discussion between myself, (MI coach) Mahela Jayawardane and (team) management about managing him (Malinga) through a tighter schedule (of the) IPL this year,” Bond told PTI here.

“We are aware about all our bowlers and (need) to manage workload, and in particular for the guys (players) who have come back from injury.

“Even though Mali (Malinga) hasn't had the best of times, there were going to be games he was to be pulled out because we wanted to make sure he is fresh and rested,” added the 41- year-old from Christchurch.

An out-of-form Malinga, who has been a champion bowler for Sri Lanka and MI, has been leaking runs this IPL season.

“This is a long tournament and we want guys all fit and fine at the back-end of the tournament. We have got good back-up in Mitch (Mitchell) Johnson and Tim Southee. So that's the challenge for us now, who to play, because we have got a good bowling stock,” said Bond.

Table-toppers Mumbai Indians have so far played eight games at the Wankhede stadium and their bowling attack has been so far impressive.

DFB-Pokal: Frankfurt in final, beat Monchengladbach on penalties

Custodian Lukas Hradecky defused 2 penalties to secure Frankfurt a final berth for the 1st time since 2006.

IANS | Berlin |

Eintracht Frankfurt overcame Borussia Mönchengladbach 7-6 on penalties to secure their ticket for the DFB Pokal final here.

Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky on Tuesday defused two penalties to secure Frankfurt a berth in the final for the first time since 2006, reports Xinhua news agency.

Mönchengladbach came from behind but were unable to turn their dominance into a tangible reward in extra time.

The Eagles started with their foot on the gas pedal to open the scoring just 15 minutes into the game as Taleb Tawatha hammered home Timothy Chandler's cross from 16 meters into the top left corner.

Mönchengladbach lacked in the creativity and accuracy needed to overcome Frankfurt's well-positioned defence.

However, the Foals were able to shock the visitors out of the blue as Jonas Hofmann tapped home Andre Hahn's assist to restore parity just before the break.

After the restart, both sides exchanged offensive actions but neither Mönchengladbach nor Frankfurt were able to grab the lead in the second half.

In overtime, Mönchengladbach pressed for the winner while Frankfurt focused on defense to force the hosts into a penalty shootout.

A goalless overtime meant a penalty shootout had to bring the decision.

Both teams converted six penalties before Frankfurt goalie Hradecky denied Andreas Christensen from the spot. Frankfurt had the chance to seal the deal with the next penalty but Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved Guillermo Varela's shot on target.

Hradecky was again on guard and parried Djibril Sow's shot before Branimir Hrgota slotted home the 7-6 shootout victory from the spot.

"I am very proud of the team. They never gave up and kept their nerves in the penalty shootout," Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic said.

With the result, Frankfurt become the first team to reach the German Cup final. Dortmund and Bayern will meet on Wednesday to battle for the second final ticket.

Turnbull to meet Donald Trump, reaffirm alliance

IANS | Sydney |

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said that he will meet US President Donald Trump on May 4 in New York and reaffirm their alliance, following rumours of a tense relationship between the two leaders.

Turnbull on Tuesday said the meeting would give him opportunities to "reaffirm our alliance and the US' engagement with the Asia-Pacific" region, EFE News reported.

The visit was officially announced by White House spokesperson Sean Spicer in Washington on Tuesday.

The Australian Premier will meet Trump on May 4 aboard the USS Intrepid museum in New York to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, a major naval battle during World War II.

In the battle, the American and Australian Navy clashed with the Japanese Imperial Navy in 1942.

The meeting comes after Vice President Mike Pence visited Australia last week.

Turnbull also visited Iraq and Afghanistan where he visited Australian troops and discussed with US Defense Secretary James Mattis the future of Asian region.

The two will also address the situation on the Korean peninsula as the region is facing "a serious threat from a reckless and dangerous regime" due to its recent weapons tests.

After taking office, Trump had a tense telephone conversation with Turnbull regarding the refugee deal signed during former President Barack Obama's administration. Since then, rumours have surfaced that the two leaders are not in a good relation.

Trump called the agreement "dumb" and reportedly accused Australia of wanting to export "the next Boston bombers", referring to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing

Meanwhile, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said that he expects better "chemistry" between the two leaders, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I think there is something of chemistry when two people meet face-to-face, which is probably not present over a phone call," Joyce said on Wednesday.

India’s proposed coal plants could imperil global climate goals

IANS | New York |

The world is unlikely to meet global climate goals if India carries through with plans to construct nearly 370 coal-fired power plants, new research warns.

If all the proposed coal plants are run to their potential, India will not be able to meet its Paris climate agreement commitments in the coming years, said the study published in the the American Geophysical Union journal Earth's Future.

The choices that India, or any country, makes with regard to its energy consumption may have global consequences, according to the reearchers.

"India is facing a dilemma of its own making," said study co-author Steven Davis, Associate Professor of Earth System Science at University of California, Irvin in the US.

"The country has vowed to curtail its use of fossil fuels in electricity generation, but it has also put itself on a path to building hundreds of coal-burning power plants to feed its growing industrial economy," Davis said.

Further, by developing all of the planned coal-fired capacity, India would boost the share of fossil fuels in its energy budget by 123 per cent.

India has pledged to the international community to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released per unit of gross domestic product by as much as 35 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030 and to increase renewable energy in its power grids.

The construction of 65 gigawatts' worth of coal-burning generation facilities with an additional 178 gigawatts in the planning stages would make it nearly impossible for India to fulfill those climate promises, the researchers said.

"We've done calculations to figure out that India's Paris pledges might be met if it built these plants and only ran them 40 percent of the time, but that'd be a colossal waste of money, and once built, there'd be huge incentives to run the plants more despite the nation's contrary climate goals," Davis said.

In addition to spewing harmful soot and other types of air pollution coal-burning power plants are the largest source of carbon dioxide on Earth, accounting for 41 per cent of all CO2 emissions in 2015.

The researchers pointed out that choices that individual countries make in regard to their energy mix have planetwide consequences.

"India's proposed coal plants will almost single-handedly jeopardise the internationally agreed-upon climate target of avoiding more than 1.5 degrees Celsius of mean global warming," Davis said.

Researchers from CoalSwarm – a project of US-based non-profit Earth Island Institute – also contributed to the study.

Tiwari's remarks came as the BJP was headed to sweep the three municipal corporations.

On Monday, 25 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed in one of the deadliest Maoist attacks in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district.

Shobu Yarlagadda, 46, took to Twitter last night where he described how the staff of the Dubai-based air carrier mistreated the team when they were on their way to Hyderabad after promoting the film in Dubai.

“Flying to Hyderabad on @emirates EK526. Airline staff at gate B4 were very rude and harassed our team unnecessarily! Bad attitude and service! ”I think one of the @emirates staff was being racist… I fly @emirates regularly and this is the first time I have come across this kind of attitude,” wrote Shobu.
