900 fowls culled in Bengaluru to contain bird flu

IANS | Bengaluru |

As many as 900 fowls were culled after the avian influenza virus was detected in a dead bird here, civic officials said on Wednesday.

“A chicken was found dead on December 29 at a chicken shop in (suburban) Dasarahalli area and it was confirmed after lab tests that the bird was infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus,” Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Joint Commissioner S. Nagaraju told IANS.

Samples from the dead bird were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal and had tested positive, he said.

“On orders from the Animal Husbandry Department, we have culled a total of 900 birds so far within the region where the infected bird was found,” he said.

H5N1 virus-infected birds spread the virus through their saliva, mucus and faeces. Although the virus does not usually infect people, it can cause fever, diarrhoea, respiratory illnesses in some affected people.

The Animal Husbandry Department had on Tuesday declared an area of 1km radius from where the bird was found dead as the “infected zone” and an area of 10km radius as the “surveillance” zone. It also ordered meat shops in the infected region to be shut down.

“Meat-selling outlets within 1 km radius from the site where the infected bird was found have all been sealed and we are also inspecting the area in a 10 km radius for any possible virus-infected birds,” Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Rajkumar Khatri told IANS.

Authorities have also put a check on the sale of eggs in Dasarahalli to prevent the spread of the virus.

“We are following all the government procedures while culling (requiring the fowls to be culled in the same region where the infection was detected) to make sure there is no spreading of the virus,” Khatri said.

The civic officials have also issued an advisory to Bengaluru citizens to avoid consuming uncooked chicken and eggs as a precautionary measure.

“We will be following up and holding inspections until we’re 100 per cent sure that we have eliminated the virus completely,” said Khatri.

Indian men’s hockey team’s national camp starts Thursday

After ending the year with a bronze medal at the Hockey World League (HWL) Final in Bhubaneswar, the Indian men’s team will report for a 10-day national camp, starting at the Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru, from Thursday.

IANS | New Delhi |

After ending the year with a bronze medal at the Hockey World League (HWL) Final in Bhubaneswar, the Indian men’s team will report for a 10-day national camp, starting at the Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru, from Thursday.

With a busy hockey calendar in 2018 that features Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April followed by the Hockey Champions Trophy at Breda in July, the Asian Games at Jakarta in August, Asian Champions Trophy in October and the much-awaited World Cup at Bhubaneswar in November, Hockey India has announced 33 players for this year’s first national camp.

Goalkeeper Krishan B. Pathak, part of the winning team of 2016 junior men’s World Cup, finds himself in the group along with Akash Anil Chikte and Suraj Karkera who had a promising outing at the Asia Cup and contributed to India’s success at the HWL Final. They will be joined by seasoned compatriot P.R. Sreejesh who is vying to find top form after nearly eight months of injury break.

Nilam Sanjeep Xess, the young defender from Bargarh, Odisha who led the Indian team to Under-18 Asia Cup win in 2016, has been elevated to the senior core group.

He will train alongside stalwart Sardar Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Dipsan Tirkey, Varun Kumar, Rupinder Pal Singh, Birendra Lakra, Surender Kumar, Gurinder Singh in the back line.

The line-up of midfielders remains unchanged with Manpreet Singh, Chinglensana Singh, S.K. Uthappa, Sumit, Kothajit Singh, Satbir Singh, Nilakanta Sharma, Simranjeet Singh, Harjeet Singh in the group.

Young forward Sumit Kumar, who featured in the junior team in 2016, has been included for the camp with seniors’ S.V. Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Gurjant Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Armaan Qureshi, Affan Yousuf and Talwinder Singh.

India will begin the season with the Four Nations Invitational Tournament in Tauranga and Hamilton, New Zealand which will see Belgium, Japan and the hosts in the fray.

“The camp will be short and we need to deal with the players who just played domestic matches which means we need to be careful in training considering we play eight matches in New Zealand,” chief coach Sjoerd Marijne said in a statement.

“Like always, the evaluation of the previous tournament needs to come from the players so that’s the first thing we do when we meet for this camp.

“I would like to understand what their experience was of the tournament and what they think needs to improve. For me, the HWL Final gave an insight into what is necessary to improve when we play higher ranked teams and I certainly believe we can do better in our 1 vs 1 defending.

“In the next tour this will be one of the key areas we would like to improve,” the 43-year-old Dutchman added.

Australia look to extend dominance in final Ashes Test

Australia will aim to extend their supremacy over a hapless England side when they face off in the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground here from Thursday.

IANS | Sydney |

Australia will aim to extend their supremacy over a hapless England side when they face off in the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground here from Thursday.

Having already regained the urn with an unassailable 3-0 lead, the hosts were further bolstered by the return of their pace spearhead Mitchell Starc after recovering from a bruised heel and skipper Steven Smith brushing off concerns about his fitness on the eve of the match.

Starc, who claimed 19 wickets in the first three Tests to help Australia wrest back the Ashes, missed the drawn Boxing Day fourth game in Melbourne before confirming his fitness on Wednesday.

Confirming the playing XI with the inclusion of Starc as the only change in place of Jackson Bird, Smith said he would be leading his side out on Thursday despite missing training on Tuesday because of a bad back.

“It’s a little bit stiff but nothing I haven’t dealt with before. I’ll have a good hit and a good catch today and I’ll be fine tomorrow,” Smith told reporters here.

“I love batting out here at the SCG, it’s my home ground and I’ve made a few good scores. So hopefully I can continue the run,” added Smith, who has accumulated a series-leading 604 runs so far.

In contrast, the visitors will hand a debut to leg-spinner Mason Crane after all-rounder Chris Woakes was ruled out of the match with an injury, captain Joe Root confirmed on Wednesday.

Woakes pulled up a side strain after the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which was rated as “poor” by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The 27-year-old’s enforced absence will be the only change to a struggling English side, which will aim for a turnaround in fortune in the new year.

Woakes’s injury has probably resulted in a reprieve for out-of-form all-rounder Moeen Ali, who had been expected to make way for 20-year-old Crane.

Crane, who played at the SCG for New South Wales last year during a highly successful stint with the Gordon club, will become the youngest England spinner to make his Test debut for 90 years.

Teams:
Australia: David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (Captain), Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (WK), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon.

England: Mark Stoneman, Alastair Cook, James Vince, Joe Root (Captain), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow (WK), Moeen Ali, Mason Crane, Tom Curran, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.

Sharing a story from the film’s set, he said: “Genelia didn’t speak to me for the first two days during the shoot of the film because my father was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra then. The first thing Genelia asked me was ‘Where is your security?’. I replied ‘I don’t have any’.”

UP govt cuts holidays alloted to madrassas in new calendar

PTI | Lucknow |

The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government has reduced the number of holidays alloted to state-recognised madrassas in the calendar for the year 2018, drawing flak from Islamic institutions.
According to the calendar issued by UP Madrassa Board Registrar Rahul Gupta, the holidays during several non-Muslim festivals like Christmas, Diwali, Dusshera, Mahavir Jayanti, Buddh Purnima and Raksha Bandhan have been increased.
On the other hand, 46 holidays given on Ramazan have been reduced to 42. Besides, 10 holidays at the discretion of madrassa managers have also been scrapped.
With the new arrangement, number of holidays in madrassas have now been reduced to 86, as compared to 92 earlier.
Protesting against the decision, the Teachers’ Association of Madaris Arabia today wrote a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, demanding that he reconsider the move.
“As per the new calendar, holidays will be given two days before the start of Ramzan. Earlier, it was given 10 days before Ramzan. It will create difficulties for madrassa students and teachers to reach their homes in time for the festivities,” Diwan Sahab Jaman, general secretary of the association, said.
Contending that the new move would send a wrong message, he said, cancellation of 10 discretionary holidays given by madrassa managers should be reconsidered.
The Teachers’ Association of Madaris Arabia also demanded 10 days special holiday and 47 days holiday on Ramzan.
Meanwhile, justifying the changes in the new calendar, state Minority Welfare Minister Chowdhury Lakshmi Narain said the changes apply to all boards, universities and madrassas.
He said the intention of the Yogi Adityanath government was to educate the students about iconic personalities and not just declare the days as holidays.
“The new calender applies to all boards, universities as well as madrassas. This decision is in the interest of students,” the minister added.

IANS | New Delhi |

In a bid to provide real time train information, the government plans to install GPS devices on over 2,700 electric locomotives by December 2018, Parliament was told on Wednesday.

“Railway Ministry in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is implementing Real-Time Train Information System (RTIS) which involves tracking of train by placing GPS/GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation System) based devices on locomotives,” Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

“In Phase one, the RTIS project will cover about 2,700 electric locomotives in which the GPS device will be installed. This phase is planned to be completed by December 2018,” he said.

He also said that in remaining locomotives GPS will be installed in subsequent phases.

According to railways, the trials for this system have been done on the New Delhi-Guwahati and New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani trains on six electric locomotives.

“A reliable and high level, of about 99.3 per cent of real time reporting of arrival departure timing updates has been observed, which is considered adequate to meet the RTIS requirements,” the minister added.

Monaco loan out Kongolo, Meite

The 23-year-old Dutch defender joined from Feyenoord in the last transfer window, before featuring for Monaco six times so far. He will wear the No. 5 jersey in Huddersfield until June 30 this year, reports.

IANS | Paris |

French Ligue 1 outfit Monaco have loaned out Terence Kongolo to newly-promoted English Premier League side Huddersfield for the remainder of the season, while Souahilo Meite joined Bordeaux on loan until the end of the season on the second day of the winter transfer window of the major European leagues.

The 23-year-old Dutch defender joined from Feyenoord in the last transfer window, before featuring for Monaco six times so far. He will wear the No. 5 jersey in Huddersfield until June 30 this year, reports.

“Terence is a top player who we’ve followed from his time at Feyenoord. His big summer move to Monaco put him out of our reach at the time, but we’re delighted we can bring him in on loan now.

“He is a high-quality young center back and will provide us with a great option for the rest of the Premier League season,” Huddersfield head coach David Wagner said on Tuesday.

“Terence has qualities that will really suit our style of play. He’s athletic and mobile and he plays on the front foot in the way he defends and uses the ball. I’m excited to work with him during the course of the season,” Wagner added.

Defensive midfielder Meite, 23, was also recruited by Monaco in the summer of 2017, with his current contract lasting until June 2022.

He played three times this season for the defending champions in the French top flight.

Scott Derrickson reveals racist, sexist side of Hollywood

SNS | New Delhi |

Apart from the glam and fame of Hollywood that we normally see, there lies a world of racist and sexists people that affect the way movies are cast.

Scott Derrickson, the director of the famous movie Doctor Strange, has been revealing such talks between him and other studio heads on his twitter handle that prove that Hollywood is not all fame and fortune. He has had a trail and a past of being a vocal critic of US president Donald Trump and was also known to stand against sexual harassment in the industry.

The first tweet came on December 31, in which his tweet explains the exchange that happened between him and Bob Weinstein when Bob had disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein’s business partner and brother, who called him to ask him for some last-minute help with a movie. Bob wanted Derrickson, who has made several horror movies such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister, to rewrite the film Dracula 2000 just two weeks before it was supposed to begin filming.

His second tweet came on January 2. In it Derrickson describes a conversation he had with an unnamed studio boss, who wanted him to make a movie about the Salem Witch Trials, but in which the witches were real. Derrickson paused and responded with a legit question that made the studio boss withdraw from the conversation.

The third tweet came on January 3. This time, Derrickson told a ‘true story’ about casting, and how a studio head shot down his suggestions – Hilary Swank, Laura Linney and Benicio del Toro in the most defamatory way. According to Derrickson, the boss refused to cast Del Toro in the film because, “he’s dirty, he smells.” The studio boss’ reasons for not casting Linney and Swank who were both Oscar winners were weighed down by the use of vulgar comments.

In all his tweets he mentioned a hashtag – TrueStory; which almost makes up for its authentic value in a word to mouth way. These tweets with insider contents in the world of Hollywood are sure to make a lot question it’s working.

Inevitable for Karnataka to get share of Mhadei water: Goa CM Parrikar

IANS | Panaji |

Taking on critics of his controversial letter to Karnataka BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa over the Mhadei river interstate dispute, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said it is inevitable for Karnataka to get its share of the river water.

He added that those who think otherwise were living in a fool’s paradise.

While addressing a press conference at the State Secretariat in Panaji, Parrikar also said that Goa’s main contention at the ongoing Mhadei Water disputes Tribunal was that Karnataka could not divert water from the already-deficit Mhadei basin to the Malaprabha river basin, which was against law.

“If someone thinks that water cannot be taken by Karnataka, he is living in a fool’s paradise. He doesn’t understand law. (If) a river flows through Karnataka, how can you deny water to them? But they cannot take the water to some other area. They have to drink it or they have to use it in that area,” Parrikar told reporters.

Mhadei, also known as the Mandovi river, is termed as a lifeline in the northern parts of Goa. It originates in Karnataka and meets the Arabian Sea at Panaji in Goa, while briefly flowing through the territory of Maharashtra. While the river runs 28.8 km in Karnataka, it is 52 km in length in the state Goa.

The southern state has demanded that Goa should allow the transfer of over seven TMC water to the Malaprabha river basin to tide over its irrigation and drinking water needs.

In its case presented before the Tribunal, Parrikar said that the Goa government, along with documentary evidence, had argued that nearly 115 TMC (thousand million cubic-feet) water was available in the Mhadei basin, whereas the actual requirement of water in the basin in all three states, namely Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa is about 145 TMC.

“The river basin is negative on requirement. Therefore, water cannot be drawn from the river and taken to some other river. That is the point before the Tribunal,” Parrikar said.

Responding to criticism of his letter written in December to Yeddyurappa, where Parrikar had agreed “on humanitarian grounds” to consider the southern state’s demand for drinking water in North Karnataka, the Goa Chief Minister said that the critics were misinformed and that his letter had taken into account the interests of Goa.

“If you (critics) try to speculate out of my letter, that is not my concern. I am sorry. I am very clear about this, that I have written a perfectly valid letter in the interest of the State,” Parrikar said, while accusing the media of wrongly slandering him and the Goa government.

Parrikar’s letter has now triggered a divide in the state cabinet and has also resulted in protests across Karnataka, with Congress and BJP criticising each other for being unable to resolve the stand-off.

In his own cabinet, Parrikar now faces opposition, with Fisheries Minister Vinod Palienkar, who belongs to Goa Forward, a regional party, vehemently opposing Parrikar’s offer in the letter to Yeddyurappa.

Another ruling ally, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party has also demanded a status quo on the dispute with Karnataka.

Asked to respond to an assurance given by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.N. Ananth Kumar, who while responding to a Zero Hour notice raised by Karnataka MP S.P.

Muddahanumegowda, that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has already written to Yeddyurappa for outside negotiations to resolve the matter, Parrikar said: “Have I made a statement? If they bait each other what do I do? I am not responsible for demands someone else makes. I explained my stand to you clearly time and again.”

India cancels $500 ml defence deal: Israeli arms firm

PTI | Jerusalem |

A top Israeli arms firm has confirmed that India cancelled a USD 500 million deal to develop Spike anti-tank guided missiles and expressed “regret” over the decision just ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s first visit to the country.

“Rafael has now received an official notification from India’s Ministry of Defence concerning the cancellation of the Spike deal,” Ishai David, a spokesman for the Rafael Advance Defence Systems Ltd, told PTI here.

Spike, in use by 26 countries around the world, is said to have been selected by India after a long and rigorous process and after complying with all the defence procurement regulations.

“It should be emphasised that the cancellation was made prior to the signing of the contract and despite Rafael’s compliance with all the demands,” the company said in a statement.

“Rafael regrets the decision and remains committed to cooperating with the Indian Ministry of Defence and to its strategy of continuing to work in India, an important market, as it has for more than two decades, to provide India with the most advanced and innovative systems,” it added.

The company did not give a reason for the cancellation of the deal.

The cancellation comes days before Netanyahu’s four-day visit to India starting January 14 and is likely to be taken up for discussion. Rafael’s CEO would also be accompanying Netanyahu.

The company recently inaugurated its facilities in Hyderabad where the project was to be executed but company sources said that it is “designed to accommodate a number of other projects Rafael is engaged in with its Indian partners”.

As per the original proposal, India had planned to acquire the ATGMs for the Army at a cost of USD 500 million.

The Indian defence ministry has been strongly pushing for transfer of technology in procuring various weapons and other platforms from foreign defence majors as part of its broad policy initiative to encourage domestic defence industry.

Official sources in New Delhi had earlier indicated that the proposal to acquire the missile system faced hurdles when Israeli side apparently expressed reservations in ensuring full transfer of technology as per the provisions of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

ASI proposes capping of visitors to Taj Mahal at 40K per day

SNS | New Delhi |

The  Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has suggested restricting the visitors’ daily footfall to 40,000 and capping of visiting hours to three hour per ticket, in a bid to preserve the heritage site, according to media reports. However, there’ll be no cap on foreign visitors.

The decision to limit visitors comes a week after five people were injured in a stampede at one of the entry gates of the 17th-century Mughal monument.

Currently, daily visitors go up to 70,000 on many days.

According to media reports, during the first slot (sunrise to 12 pm) 20,000 visitors would be allowed and another 20,000 in the next (12pm till sunset). Prices would be hiked from Rs 40 to Rs 50. There would be separate Rs 100 tickets for the main crypt.

There would be no cap on Rs. 1,000 tickets meant for foreigners, which means Indians too can secure entry if they buy the tickets meant for foreign nationals.

Recently, the SC lashed out at UP and refuse, once again, to let it construct a multi-level parking lot near the Taj Mahal.

Decision taken by ASI, CISF and Agra district administration

Culture Secretary Ravindra Singh held a high-level meeting with ASI officials and representatives of Agra district administration and officers of the Central Industrial Security Force, where the decision was taken.

Ministry officials said that the sale of tickets – both online and offline – will be stopped at the 40,000 mark.

As of now, there is no restriction on the number of people entering the iconic monument complex at any point of time. The average footfall at the monument has increased at a rate of 10-15 per cent per annum.

The ASI is also likely to introduce a system to issue “zero-value” tickets to children below the age of 15 years, enabling them to keep a count of the number of such visitors, whose entry will remain free.

The ASI had in 2012 commissioned the National Environmental Engineering and Research Institute (NEERI) to prepare a report on the monument’s load-bearing capacity.

The decision to limit the number of visitors has been based on the final recommendation in the report submitted by NEERI, the officials said.

The Taj Mahal is considered one of the finest specimens of the Mughal architecture. In 1983, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.”
