Congress condemns FIR against Tribune, reporter Rachna Khaira

SNS | New Delhi |

The Congress on Sunday condemned the lodging of an FIR against The Tribune daily and its reporter Rachna Khaira over Aadhaar data breach story.

After a January 3 news report by Punjab-based newspaper, The Tribune, over breach in Aadhaar data with a headline “Rs 500, 10 minutes, and you have access to billion Aadhaar details”, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has registered an FIR against the newspaper and reporter Rachna Khaira.

The FIR was lodged with the Cyber Cell of the Crime Branch by  UIDAI under IPC sections 419 (cheating under impersonation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery), 471 (using a forged document) and also under sections of the IT Act and the Aadhar Act.

The FIR also names Anil Kumar, Sunil Kumar and Raj (all of whom were contacted by the Tribune reporter as part of the story), according to media reports.

The Congress party said it was Narendra Modi government’s “arrogance of power” at its worst and their intention on privacy was thoroughly exposed.

“Intent and Intentions of Modi government on privacy were thoroughly exposed when it had proclaimed that no citizen can have an absolute right over his/her body,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala on Twitter.

“In Supreme Court, Modi government had accepted Aadhaar data leak! Now instead of investigating, an evasive Modiji shoots the messenger!” he added.

Earlier, he tweeted: “Shoot the messenger, Ignore the message! This typifies the culture and character of BJP government.

“FIR against The Tribune reporter is arrogance of power at its worst,” said Surjewala.

He also said: “Every Indian must condemn this mindless act of Modi government and UIDAI.”

A case of ‘misreporting’

Earlier, in a statement, UIDAI had responded to the news report as a “case of misreporting”.

“The reported case appears to be instance of misuse of the grievance redressal search facility. As UIDAI maintains complete log and traceability of the facility, the legal action including lodging of FIR against the persons involved in the instant case is being done,” said the authority.

The Aadhaar database “remains fully safe and secure with highest encryption at UIDAI and mere display of demographic information cannot be misused without biometrics”, said UIDAI.

“Claims of bypassing or duping the Aadhaar enrolment system are totally unfounded. The UIDAI Data Centres are infrastructure of critical importance and is protected accordingly with high technology conforming to the best standards of security and also by legal provisions.”

The data breach report

The Tribune report, which was widely shared on social media sites, claimed that it took just Rs 500 and 10 minutes for the newspaper to get an access through an “agent” to every detail of any individual submitted to the UIDAI, including name, address, postal code (PIN), photo, phone number and email.

The newspaper said it paid another Rs 300, for which the “agent” provided “software” to facilitate the printing of the Aadhaar card after entering the Aadhaar number of any individual.

The Tribune also claimed to have found in its investigation that the racket may have started around six months ago when some anonymous groups were created on WhatsApp.

These groups targeted over three lakh village-level enterprise operators hired by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (ME&IT) under the Common Service Centres Scheme (CSCS) across India, offering them access to UIDAI data.

CSCS operators were initially entrusted with the task of making Aadhaar cards across the country but were withdrawn later. The service was restricted to post offices and designated banks to avoid any security breach in November last year.

Being known as Salman’s brother has more pros than cons: Arbaaz

PTI | Mumbai |

He is born to veteran screenwriter Salim Khan and has superstar Salman Khan as his big brother, but Arbaaz says the stardom of his kin has not overshadowed his career.

The 50-year-old actor-director said getting recognised as Salman’s brother does not bother him and it only acts as an advantage.

“I don’t think (it has bothered me) ever. There are only advantages of being Salim Khan’s son, Salman Khan’s brother and coming from a known family,” Arbaaz said.

The actor said the fact that “I could never make it to the level that I should have was because I was under pressure or under the shadow of my father or brother. I think those are just excuses.”

Arbaaz said he is aware that there is a certain baggage of expectations when a person comes a famous family but he has taken it in his stride.

“There is a pressure. People look at you differently. But you’ve got to move on. I look at all that has happened to me because of my family as an advantage rather than disadvantage.

It has more pros than cons.”

After an acting career of more than a decade, Arbaaz ventured into film production between 2009 and 2014. He took a sabbatical from acting as he produced films like Dabangg, Dabangg 2 – which he also directed – and Dolly Ki Doli.

He, however, said acting is something he enjoys the most.

“For me, acting is something I am passionate about. I am someone who wants to be known for who I am. If I wanted to just make money, I would’ve chosen some other profession.

“I know there are insecurities in being an actor. There are certain compromises you need to make, but they are all worth it. The perks of being recognised are something else,” he said.

Arbaaz is currently awaiting the release of his next Nirdosh, in which he plays a cop investigating a murder.

The thriller, directed by Pradeep Rangwani and Subroto Paul, also features Manjari Fadnis, Ashmit Patel, Maheck Chahal and Mukul Dev.

Nirdosh is scheduled to be released on January 19.

Vowed not to speak unnecessarily, says Alphons

IANS | Kochi |

Union Tourism and IT Minister K.J. Alphons, who has trolled on social media over his comments on various issues, on Sunday said he had vowed not to speak unnecessarily.

“I have now decided that I will speak only to issues related to me and will not speak on other issues, as I have been mocked for no reason by twisting what I said. I have had enough as it has become difficult to even crack jokes,” he said while taking part in a discussion on a TV channel.

Ever since his induction into the Narendra Modi ministry last September, Alphons turned out to be the punching bag as whatever he spoke turned out to be hugely trolled, especially his reaction on beef-eating, rising petroleum prices and so on.

A former bureaucrat, he had been a Left-supported legislator in Kerala from 2006-11 before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2011.

Goalkeeper Aditi eyes return to Indian team for Asian Games

PTI |

Back from England after playing two seasons with West Ham United Ladies Football Club, goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan is hopeful of regaining her spot in the national women’s team for the Asian Games later this year.

Aditi is anticipating a better show from the team at the Asian Games to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

“I am coming back from an injury and this year. The Asian Games are taking place in August. So my target is to return to the senior team and represent my country in Indonesia,” Aditi told a select group of media persons here.

Aditi, daughter of Inspector General of CRPF, Jammu, A V Chauhan, is the only Indian woman footballer who played for the top English club for two seasons from 2015.

West Ham Ladies are currently in the Football Association’s (FA) Women’s Premier League Southern Division, a league in the third level in the women’s football structure in England.

She is here to spend time with her parents and is leaving for Delhi next week to resume her training ahead of the national camp for the Asian Games.

“We still have a long way to go but I am confident that the team will do better this time (in the Asian Games) compared to last year.

“Last time, it was little bit unfair also as in our pool there were teams like China and Korea. They are ranked much higher than India so we were unlucky in that aspect,” she said.

Brimming with confidence after her experience with the West Ham, Aditi said she would work harder to ensure her selection in Asian Games-bound squad.

“I had gone for studies and landed in London for internship through my course. There are opportunities, no matter what level you are playing and there is a football club in every corner,” Aditi said.

“Basically, I wanted to test myself that if I am the first goalkeeper of the national team back in the country and if I have that calibre where does it puts me in England.

“I gave a trial in Mill Wall club but because I was on student visa I could not play professionally for that club.

But their goalkeeper coach was also the West Ham coach and suggested me to give a trial there. After the trial match and two training sessions, I was selected,” she said.

About her experience in England where she completed her post graduate degree in sports management from Loughborough University, she said it was very difficult as the level of their sport is much higher.

“We have to accept the fact that the history of football in Europe is very old while the football culture in our country is new. It is very unfair to compare the two.

Football is their main sport and it will take time to match their standard,” she said.

Interestingly, this is first time in four year that he failed to make an impression in his first innings of the calendar year (2018).

New Delhi |

Virat Kohli went on to add an ‘unwanted’ record in his already stellar career after India was bundled-out for 209 in their first inning of the opening Test match against South Africa at Newlands Cape Town on Saturday.

Indian batters failed to capitalise after Proteas were bowled out at 286 runs. Visitors lost their top order within 28 runs including Indian skipper Virat Kohli (5).

Interestingly, this is first time in four year that he failed to make an impression in his first innings of the calendar year (2018).
