Get the smear out before cervical cancer conquers you
One should not be shied away from talking about cervical cancer, the fourth leading cause of deaths in women from cancer.
IANS | January 20, 2018 1:46 pm
Representational Image (Photo: Istock)
According to WHO, cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of deaths from cancer in women worldwide and India accounts for a third of the deaths globally, with two women dying every 15 minutes.
Photo: Istock
Cancer, which affects the opening of the uterus, can be treated effectively if detected early.
Cervical cancer is commonly caused by an infection with specific high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Photo: Istock
Even with such glaring numbers, Indian women have shied away from talking about cancer, or taking precautions, or getting themselves tested.
Every year, nearly 2,000 women in India are diagnosed with the last stage of cervical cancer and 1,200 women are diagnosed with early stage of cancer.
According to a 2015 article in the International Journal of Women’s Health, it is the second-most common cancer in women aged between 15 and 44 years.
Photo: Istock
The reason for more women succumbing to cervical cancer is due to lack of awareness, early marriage, multiple sexual partners, multiple pregnancies, poor genital hygiene of both men and women, poor healthcare facilities, lack of testing facilities in rural areas, smoking and the like.
These factors have attributed to the increase in cervical cancer amongst women in India.
Even though there are vaccines which have been introduced that are effective, they are unfortunately still not part of India’s National Immunisation Programme.
The reason why people are not proactive is lack of awareness of the health implication of the disease across all classes of society, whether poor or affluent or well-educated.
Even though the disease poses a threat to life, not many parents would think about getting their daughters vaccinated for cervical cancer during their teens.
Cervical cancer does not reveal any symptoms during its early phase. Only later does it begin to show symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, discharge of watery or thick and foul odor, pelvic pain, increased need to urinate, pain during urination and the like.
Photo: Istock
Cervical cancer can be screened through a pap smear test in which a sample is collected through a routine pelvic examination.
A lighted microscope is used to examine the external surface of the cervix. Any abnormal area that is noted is scraped and the sample is sent to a pathologist to look for precancerous or cancerous changes.
The next level of the confirmatory test is HPV test which is prescribed if any abnormality is found in the pap smear.
The same sample is used to check for the presence of human papillomavirus.
A Pap smear is recommended for women between 21 and 29 years once every three years. In case a woman is between 30 and 65, a pap smear+HPV test is recommended once every five years.
It is important that there should be larger campaigns and education imparted to increase knowledge and awareness about HPV-associated cancers nationwide.
This can promote prevention through vaccination of the adolescent population.
This will help reduce HPV infection and cervical cancer-related stigma, enabling successful implementation of screening and vaccination programmes which can help to reduce the burden and mortality caused by cervical cancer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed his delight as the five-day Ramayana Festival got underway in the national capital ahead of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit that begins on January 25.
In a series of tweets, Modi said: “Delighted to know that the Ramayana Festival, with participation of all ten ASEAN countries, begins in Delhi today. This celebrates India’s deep civilizational and historical relations with the ASEAN region.”
“An important part of a series of events to commemorate 25 years of India-ASEAN relations, the Festival is a fitting prelude to the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit on 25th January,” he added.
“Troupes from ASEAN countries will display our shared heritage also at Lucknow, Ayodhya, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Hyderabad,” Modi said further.
The Indian epic saga Ramayana, which is also a popular theme for theatre presentation in ASEAN countries, has been conceptualised into a festival in a bid to further enhance India-ASEAN ties.
The fest is being organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and will see participation of 10 countries — Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
Their performance will reveal the assimilation, indigenisation and re-interpretation the epic has undergone in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.
After their performances in Delhi, Ramayana groups from across the globe will also be performing in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya and Lucknow, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Gujarat’s Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile, the largest so far ASEAN-India business and investment summit is slated to be held in New Delhi on January 25 which will be attended by all the 10 leaders from South-East Asia.
The summit to celebrate 25 years of partnership will be followed by the presence of all 10 leaders as chief guests at India’s Republic Day on January 26.
Snap Inc, the parent company of popular photo-sharing platform Snapchat, has laid off two dozen employees — mostly editors — across divisions within the company.
“Most of the layoffs were in Snap’s content division, which includes editors who curate user-submitted videos for breaking news and other events,” tech website Cheddar reported late on Friday.
The content division is responsible for working with more than 70 publishing partners including NBC and BuzzFeed to produce original videos for the app.
“A handful of employees in New York and London were also asked to relocate to the company’s Los Angeles headquarters and some layoffs also took place in Snap’s engineering and partnership teams,” the report added.
A Snap spokesperson, who confirmed the job cuts to Cheddar, did not comment further.
Since September, Snap has laid off approximately 30 employees as it tries to rejig its business and find new opportunities for revenue growth, according to Fortune.
Snap Inc, that recently revamped Snapchat, received flak from the users who found its new look and feel confusing.
The design overhaul has not been received well by its initial users in countries such as Britain, Australia and Canada, with up to 83 per cent of reviews on the Apple App Store being negative.
Snap Inc. has also come under fire after announcing slowing user growth.
India vs South Africa: Proteas to gun for series whitewash against Virat Kohli’s men

In the on-going three-match Test series, between India and South Africa, Faf du Plessis’ side had taken the unassailable 2-0 lead with their consecutive Test win over Virat Kohli’s boys.
In the first match, the strong line up of India had been rattled by South Africa seamers as they lost the match by 72 runs. In the second match, the saga continued as Du Plessis’s side thrashed India by 135 runs.
The South African pacer Kagiso Rabada has revealed that their side is looking for the complete whitewash of the series.
“Obviously we know how to play fast bowling and we’ve got respect for their attack. Every game you go into, you want to win. So obviously we want to get a whitewash against India,” Rabada said.
The African pacer also further said that the tourist batting line-up is too much reliant on their captain Virat Kohli as the skipper had fought a lone battle in Centurion with his 153 run knock.
“I think they do rely on him. But it is just like we rely on a couple of players too. I’m not saying India doesn’t have any quality players, they do. But it’s just a fact – Kohli scores most of their runs,” added Rabada.
“It is really enjoyable bowling to the likes of him. He was named ICC Player of the Year (sic), so it’s quite cool to go up against the best,” Rabada said.
When Rabada was asked about tourists’ lack of preparation for the series, he said, “I don’t know what’s going on in their preparation. That’s not something we want to look at really.”
“We’ve got no concern with their preparation. We’re concerned with how we want to get them out and how we want to win against them. I’m not going to diagnose their problems,” said Kagiso Rabada.
While talking about India’s competitive spirit, Rabada praises India’s batting and bowling.
“Playing against the Indians is extremely challenging. They are known for their great batsmen and they’ve got really good bowlers as well. So they are very competitive, they’re throwing everything they have at us, and their batsmen want to make a statement.
“They’ve made a statement everywhere else in the world, and they wanted to come here and really beat us. So things are going to get a bit messy out there. But that’s just the nature of it, with two quality sides coming against each other. Off the field, we’re friends,” he added.
The South African pacer also talked about Lungi Ngidi who had taken 6 wickets for 39 in the second inning of the second Test and said, “Lungi and I, we played together in the Under-19. We even toured India I remember, but he got injured unfortunately and his trip was cut short. But we played together at school and we have a history. So it’s just nice to play with your friend, from when you were a teenager.”
“Hopefully long may it continue, and we can form a great partnership. I know he has enjoyed bowling with the likes of Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander as well,” he added.

Mamata Banerjee also announced plans to recruit 89,000 teachers soon
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to declare birth anniversaries of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as national holidays.
Banerjee in a tweet said, “Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose are national and international icons. I have written a letter to the PM urging the GOI to declare both their birthdays (Jan 12 and Jan 23) national holidays”.
Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose are national and international icons. I have written a letter to the PM urging the GOI to declare both their birthdays (Jan 12 and Jan 23) national holidays
Swami Vivekananda’s 155th birth anniversary was celebrated on 12 January and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose birth anniversary will be celebrated on 23rd January.
Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January, 1863 and his original name was Narendra Nath Datta. He was the chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna and a key figure in introducing the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. The spiritual leader became famous in the western world after his powerful speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.
The government in 1984 declared that his birth anniversary will be observed as the National Youth Day.
Subhas Chandra Bose, who was also referred as Netaji, was born 23 January 1897 in Bengal constituency (now Odisha state) in India. He was a Indian Independence movement activist and a member of Indian National Congress Party. He became the party president in 1938. Netaji left India after he had a falling-out with Mahatma Gandhi and later approached Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan to assist in making India an independent country.
Netaji died from third-degree burns on 18 August 1945 after his overloaded Japanese plane crashed in Japanese-ruled Formosa (now Taiwan). His death has been mired in controversy, as the circumstances of his death were not accepted by his supporters.
I can only chase my characters, not my actors: Abhishek Kapoor
SNS | Mumbai | January 20, 2018 1:32 pm
Abhishek Kapoor has been in news for his forthcoming film Kedarnath, wherein the filmmaker has roped in newcomer Sarah Ali Khan who will be seen romancing Sushant Singh Rajput. When asked the director on how did Kedarnath happen, he shared,“In my house, spirituality has been a guiding principle. I am a big believer of Shiv ji and the cosmic forces that oversee us.There are two kinds of people in the spiritual world. Those who are Believers, n and those who are seekers. A believer has trust in the universe and a seeker is one who isn’t but is trying to gain that trust.”
“I have made many trips to Vaishnodevi, and I have seen people trekking up mountains on these pilgrimages, on these arduous trips to find God. What I have observed is that on their journeys to seek God, they usually experience God at some point along the way.”
He further added, “The incident of the floods in 2013 also could not leave my mind, due to the stories that came out of it – devastating and remarkable in equal measure. I had to go ahead and develop a film set against that backdrop. I believe it is one of the most important stories I can tell for modern India.”
Abhishek shares a special equation with newcomers, the filmmaker in the past has delivered successful newcomers like Farhan Akhtar, Sushant Singh Rajput and now is working with Sarah Ali Khan. To this Abhishek adds, “Newcomers have an infectious energy and unpredictability and give the audience a surprise. Having said that, it’s not that I mind working with established actors provided they are as excited about portraying the characters that I would like to see brought to life.I am bringing to life. I can only chase my characters, not my actors. Sometimes it is not possible to do both.”
The Kai Po Che director sets out to be an industry insider but refrains from being spotted with a particular camp, when quizzed him on this, Abhishek said, “Yes, it’s true, when I was growing up my mother’s brother Jitendra was a major Hindi movie star, and we do know a lot of people from the movie business, but as with everyone, the decision to be in films and my journey in film was my own, and has been a fairly challenging one too. Knowing people is not an automatic all-access pass to success. Very early on I saw a lot of failure, so any sense of entitlement I may have had about my place in the business was quickly knocked out of me.”
He further adds, “I have gone through my share of struggles and have understood that it does not matter whether you start as an “Insider” or as an “Outsider”. What matters is who you are and what you bring to the table in terms of your creativity and your work ethic.”

Four members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) were arrested in connection with the brutal killing of a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Kannur in Kerala.
All four had fled to Wayanad after allegedly committing the crime.
The arrests came a day after Shyam Prasad was hacked to death in Kommeri while on his way home to Koothuparamba on his motorcycle in the evening. A gang accosted him in a car. The around 24-year-old Prasad was brutally hacked as he tried to escape the attackers.
Though locals rushed him to the government hospital at Koothuparamba, he died on the way. Prasad was a student of the Kakkayangad ITI.
The ABVP has accused the Popular Front of India (PFI) for the murder. (The SDPI is the political wing of the PFI.) The BJP has called for a 12-hour hartal on Saturday. Only vehicles have been exempted from the hartal.
Calling for a ban on the outfit, ABVP state secretary Shyam Raj said that the murder has exposed the “terror” face of the PFI.
Kannur has been the hotbed of political violence in Kerala. The city boasts of a dubious statistic of killing of members of both the BJP-RSS and the CPI(M), which is in power in Kerala.
According to NDTV, at least 45 CPI(M) activists and 44 BJP activists have been killed in the district since 2000.

A local court on Saturday awarded death sentence to six people in the 2013 Sonai honour killing case in which three Dalit youths were killed in Ahmednagar district.
Judge R R Vaishnav sentenced the six to death and also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 each on them for killing the Dalit youths, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told reporters here.
The three youths were brutally killed in Sonai village on January 1, 2013, and their mutilated body parts were found in a septic tank.
The judge on January 15 had convicted Popat alias Raghunath Darandale (52), Ramesh Darandale (42), Prakash Darandale (38), Ganesh alias Pravain Darandale (23), Ashok Navgire (32) and Sandeep Kurhe (37), all residents of Ahmednagar district, under various sections of the IPC.
The six were convicted on various charges including murder and criminal conspiracy for killing Sachin Gharu (24), Sandeep Thanvar (25) and Rahul Kandare (20).
According to police, the killings were prompted by an intercaste love affair between Gharu and a girl from the Maratha community.
Facebook will use public survery to prioritise trustworthy news: Mark Zuckerberg
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Zuckerberg said it’s important that News Feed promotes high-quality news that helps build a sense of common ground.
IANS | January 20, 2018 1:21 pm
After tweaking its News Feed to allow users to see more updates from family and friends than posts from businesses, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has now announced to prioritise news that is trustworthy, informative and local.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Zuckerberg said it’s important that News Feed promotes high-quality news that helps build a sense of common ground for its over two billion users.
Here’s how this new update, starting in the US from next week, will work.
“As part of our ongoing quality surveys, we will now ask people whether they’re familiar with a news source and, if so, whether they trust that source,” the Facebook CEO said.
The idea is that some news organisations are only trusted by their readers or watchers, and others are broadly trusted across society even by those who don’t follow them directly, he added.
“To make sure the news you see, while less overall, is high quality. I’ve asked our product teams to make sure we prioritise news that is trustworthy, informative, and local.
“And we’re starting next week with trusted sources,” Zuckerberg added.
According to him, the new update will not change the amount of news people see on Facebook. It will only shift the balance of news they see towards sources that are determined to be trusted by the community.
The earlier News Feed update to show more updates from family and friends will result in less public content, including news, video, and posts from brands in your News Feed, he noted.
“After this change, we expect news to make up roughly four per cent of News Feed — down from roughly five per cent today. This is a big change, but news will always be a critical way for people to start conversations on important topics,” the Facebook CEO said.
He said that Facebook has got a feedback from the community that public content — posts from businesses, brands and media — is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.
The impact will vary from Page to Page, driven by factors, including the type of content they produce and how people interact with it.
Pele’s adviser denies reports he collapsed, was taken to hospital
“A round trip to London would have been even more exhausting. He’s fine,” Pepito said.

A close adviser to Brazilian football legend Pele has denied a report indicating he was taken to a hospital this week after collapsing due to exhaustion.
“I don’t know who invented that news. He went to and from Rio de Janeiro this week by car and it was stressful, a tiring trip. He didn’t feel bad. He’s at home doing physical therapy,” Jose Fornos Rodrigues, known as “Pepito,” told EFE.
Pele, a three-time World Cup champion who is regarded by many as the greatest player of all time, canceled a scheduled trip this week to London because he was fatigued after arriving in Sao Paulo from Rio.
“A round trip to London would have been even more exhausting. He’s fine,” Pepito said.
Pele’s family members also said when approached by Brazilian media that they were unaware the former football great had been hospitalised.
Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital, where Pele undergoes routine tests and evaluations, denied the ex-player had been admitted this week.
England’s Football Writers’ Association issued an “important notice” on Friday indicating the 77-year-old football icon had collapsed and undergone a series of tests that appeared to suggest he was suffering from “severe exhaustion.”
“In the early hours of Thursday morning, Pele collapsed and was taken to hospital in Brazil where he has undergone a series of tests which appear to point to severe exhaustion. He remains on fluids while doctors monitor his recovery,” the notice said.
“Thankfully, there is no suggestion of anything more serious than exhaustion and everybody at the Football Writers’ Association wishes Pele a swift and full recovery,” it added.
“Understandably, his medical situation prevents him from traveling to London for the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Night on Sunday evening at The Savoy.”
