Stressing that people approach the police “not for sympathy but empathy”, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday asked trainee police officers to maintain professional and intellectual integrity.

Addressing probationer officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (NPA) in Hyderabad, Rajnath said police should focus on being a civilised force and not a brute force.

“People will come to you not for sympathy but empathy. You should maintain good conduct and behaviour during your service. You will have to maintain professional and intellectual integrity while serving for the country,” he said.

“The police should not be a brute force but it should be a civilised force,” he added.

The minister further said that there was a need for modernisation of police forces.

“We need to work towards modernisation of police forces… Recently the government has allocated Rs. 25,000 crores for police modernisation in the country,” he said. The minister also announced a grant of Rs.5 crore to NPA’s welfare society.

Rajanth also asked the officers to “maintain” the momentum against terrorism and Left wing extremism.

“The world today is faced with many challenges pertaining to security which includes terrorism, cyber terrorism and radicalization… The government has registered certain gains in the recent times against terrorism and Left Wing Extremism. You need to maintain that momentum,” he said.
A total of 136 officer trainees including five officers each from Bhutan and Nepal, four from Maldives and 22 lady officers have completed their training at NPA, Rajnath informed.
