Many Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators and councillors including a cabinet minister were detained by the police on Friday when they staged a protest outside the Urban Development Ministry office at Nirman Bhavan against the “steep hike” in Metro fares.

Led by the AAP Delhi convener Gopal Rai, the party functionaries gathered at Udyog Bhavan metro station and later marched with dozens of volunteers to Nirman Bhavan where they raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi whom they blamed for the Metro fare hike.

However, after the AAP workers refused to leave the place, the police deployed there swung into action and detained many AAP lawmakers including Delhi Social Welfare minister Rajendra Pal Gautam. All the detainees were released later.

Addressing the protestors, Rai accused the BJP government at the Centre for overnight doubling the Metro fares.

“The citizens of Delhi are in a fix and cannot afford this sudden uncalled hike but the BJP government is absolutely impervious to the demands of the citizens,” Rai said.

Rai, who also holds a cabinet post in the Delhi government, said AAP will not be deterred by the use of police force by the Central government and will continue its ‘Satyagraha’ to get justice for the citizens of Delhi.

Rai said in the coming week AAP volunteers will hold peaceful protests in front of the houses of the 7 BJP MPs from Delhi and will appeal to them to stand up for the rights of the citizens who voted for them.

“AAP volunteers will present the BJP MPs with roses and ask them why are they silent when the Delhi citizens who voted for them and sent them to Parliament are suffering,” he said.
