A Dalit was killed in the fresh violence involving people from lower and upper caste in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur on Tuesday. The police have arrested at least 24 people. There situation was tense but under control, it is learnt. The government has stepped up security in the area.

The clashes between Dalits and upper caste members, which began on 5 May, erupted again on Tuesday after BSP supremo Mayawati had visited the area on Tuesday.

According to reports, a group of Dalits allegedly threw stones at the houses of a few Rajputs before Mayawati's rally, leading to the violence in which a Dalit man died while several others were injured.

The incident occurred when a truck carrying Dalits back to their village from the rally was attacked allegedly by Thakurs.

The BJP strongly objected to Mayawati visiting the violence-hit area and urged her not to not promote caste politics and help the Yogi Adityanath administration to maintain harmony in the state.

The violence erupted on 5 May after some Dalit residents in Shabbirpur raised objections to Thakurs’ procession in which loud music was being played. Following this, around 25 houses belonging to Dalits were torched. Over a dozen people were injured.

The situation worsened when the district administration didn’t allow the Dalits to hold a 'mahapanchayat' on 9 May.
