BASIRHAT, 17 AUG: Sumila Bibi (name changed), a 20-year-old victim of the menace of dowry, from the village of Swarupdaha, Basirhat, North 24 Parganas is waiting for justice to be delivered for the past few months notwithstanding the regular threats from the accused perpetrators and alleged procrastination of police.
Sumila Bibi was married to Laltu Sardar a year and half ago and soon after marriage, he and his family started torturing her for more money and other things. He accused her of having an extramarital affair and her husband allegedly started beating her up on a regular basis with pieces of cloth stuffed inside her mouth to prevent her from shouting which would have alerted the neighbours.
She lodged an FIR with the Swarupnagar police station, Basirhat, North 24 Parganas on 21 May this year. Police arrested her in-laws but her husband Laltu, the main accused, remains at large till date.
Sumila Bibi accused that police asked her to figure out the whereabouts of Laltu Sardar and hand him over to them. It has even been alleged by Sumila Bibi and her family that police asked for money in order to apprehend the main culprit. When contacted, Mr Prasun Mitra, Officer-in-Charge of Swarupnagar Police Station, brushing aside the allegations, saying, he was not fully aware of the case as he had just joined, but he confirmed that three of her in-laws have been arrested and produced before Basirhat Court.
When asked about the case, Mr Arindam Goldar, Sumila’s lawyer, blamed police for not being able to apprehend the main accused.
