According to the Meteorological Department, the fog in Uttar Pradesh has increased due to an anticyclone over western India and surrounding areas and the active western jet stream in the upper atmosphere.
Under its influence, the Tirupati and Nellore districts would receive heavy rains accompanied by squally winds up to 60 kmph, before the deep depression is likely to fizzle out gradually on Tuesday.
Earlier on Thursday, the deep depression intensified into a cyclone and has been christened ‘Dithwa’, as suggested by Yemen and it refers to the Detwah lagoon on Socotra island, known for its distinct coastal ecosystem.
However, the red alert for the Tiruvallur, adjoining Chennai, and Ranipet districts remains with heavy rainfall forecast for nine districts, including Chennai and the neighbouring Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts.
The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri after heavy rains triggered severe waterlogging and a fatal landslide in Vikhroli. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh’s monsoon death toll has climbed to 257 amid landslides, flash floods, and road blockages.
The National Capital remained on red alert amid a persistent heat wave, with the mercury soaring to 43.9 degrees Celsius and the minimum going down to 30.7 degrees Celsius, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Thursday.
Moreover, the weather office has issued a ‘red alert’ for Thursday and a yellow alert for Friday with no immediate respite forecasted from the scratching heat.
