Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Monday. During the meeting, the Chief Minister apprised her of the financial situation of Himachal Pradesh and urged her to increase the state's borrowing limit. He informed the Union Minister about the massive losses incurred due to recent heavy rains and flash floods and requested the Centre’s assistance. CM Sukhu reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline but appealed to the Centre to take a sympathetic view of Himachal’s unique geographical and climatic challenges. The meeting comes at a crucial time, as the state has suffered major losses in Mandi district during the current monsoon, while still recovering from last year’s rain-induced disasters. It marks another step in the state government’s ongoing efforts to secure central assistance to stabilize finances and accelerate recovery from climate-induced damage. According to data from the State Emergency Operation Centre, the state has suffered losses amounting to ₹751.78 crore due to damage caused to property and infrastructure between June 20 and July 11. So far, 92 lives have been lost. Additionally, 844 houses, 631 cowsheds, and 164 shops have been damaged. Road connectivity has been severely hit, with 247 roads, including NH-21 (Mandi-Kullu) and NH-003 (Mandi-Dharampur via Kotli), still blocked.
During his visit on Wednesday to the severely affected areas of the Seraj Assembly constituency in Mandi district, the Chief Minister met with victims of the recent cloudbursts and torrential rains.
The chief minister also took feedback from the teachers regarding various issues and practical problems they were facing.
The initiatives primarily focus on strengthening education infrastructure and improving access to higher learning, especially for students from rural and remote areas.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu questioned the anouncement of ceasefire with Pakistan by the Centre, alleging that the annoucnement was made without consulting armed forces.
Presiding over a high-level meeting here on Friday, the Chief Minister took detailed feedback from all DCs and SPs regarding the prevailing situation in their respective districts.
The government is also taking steps to prepare rootstocks for apple plants within the state although it is not enough considering the huge demand, he said.
He was speaking in an annual prize distribution ceremony of St. Bede’s College.
The pending post codes include 295 posts for Post Code 939 (JOA IT), 82 posts for Post Code 903 (JOA IT), Copy Holder Post Code 982, Workshop Instructor Post Code 992, Psychologist Post Code 994, and Workshop Instructor Post Code 997.
