Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Monday.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister apprised her of the financial situation of Himachal Pradesh and urged her to increase the state’s borrowing limit.
He informed the Union Minister about the massive losses incurred due to recent heavy rains and flash floods and requested the Centre’s assistance.
CM Sukhu reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline but appealed to the Centre to take a sympathetic view of Himachal’s unique geographical and climatic challenges.
The meeting comes at a crucial time, as the state has suffered major losses in Mandi district during the current monsoon, while still recovering from last year’s rain-induced disasters.
It marks another step in the state government’s ongoing efforts to secure central assistance to stabilize finances and accelerate recovery from climate-induced damage.
According to data from the State Emergency Operation Centre, the state has suffered losses amounting to ₹751.78 crore due to damage caused to property and infrastructure between June 20 and July 11.
So far, 92 lives have been lost. Additionally, 844 houses, 631 cowsheds, and 164 shops have been damaged.
Road connectivity has been severely hit, with 247 roads, including NH-21 (Mandi-Kullu) and NH-003 (Mandi-Dharampur via Kotli), still blocked.
