Winds whipped up the deep dark waters of the river Muri Ganga which stretches for four kilometres from the delta island of Sagar Deep (which means “sea island” in Bengali) to the first port on the mainland, called Lot Number 8.
From being centred at a distance of 460 km yesterday, the brewing cyclone Dana came as close as 150 km from Paradip and 250 km south of Sagar Island this afternoon.
With cyclonic storm Dana expected to make landfall later tonight, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is staying at the state secretariat, Nabanna, the whole night to monitor the unfolding situation from the control room there. Miss Banerjee disclosed this at a press conference at Nabanna today.

In light of the impending cyclonic storm Dana, Eastern Railway’s Howrah division too has implemented a series of precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of the storm and heavy rainfall.

A deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Asani' on Sunday after it moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 16 kmph, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
