The priority of the Ministry of Coal is to enhance domestic coal production to reduce the dependence on substitutable coal imports.

Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported production of 619.70 million tonnes up to February 2023 as compared to 542.38 million tonnes during the same period of the last fiscal, an increase of 14.26 per cent.
Coal production has increased from 730.87 MT (Million Ton) in 2019-20 to 778.19 MT in 2021-22, achieving a growth of 6.47 per cent.
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited continues to lead in its segment after producing 168 million tonne coal last year and recording new highs in all the three parameters, registering a growth of 17.5% in coal production.
Of the top 37 mines in coal production, as many as 24 mines produced more than 100 per cent and the production of five mines stood between 80 and 100 per cent.
