Highlighting India’s “tradition” of worshipping women, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said even gods bless the land where women are worshipped.

Speaking in lucknow, Adityanath said: “We have a tradition of worshiping women, it’s believed wherever they’re worshiped ‘devtas’ (gods) bless and where they aren’t, that part of land is never safe.”

Earlier in the day, Yogi in a series of tweets greeted the women folk on the occasion of International Women’s Day and credited them for building a new India.

“On the occasion of International Women’s Day, hearty congratulations and best wishes to all women,” he tweeted.

“Women power is marching towards building a new India,” he added.

Around the world, March 8 is a day when women are recognised for their achievements irrespective of the field they represent, cutting across national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political spectra.

While the idea of International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements early 20th century in North America and across Europe, the Charter of the United Nations, signed in 1945, is said to be the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men.
