At least 30 people have been killed and scores of other injured in the violence that erupted after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was held guilty of rape by a special CBI court in Panchkula, news agency IANS has reported. There was no official confirmation about the loss of lives, however, reports said death toll can go up.

Dera followers clashed with security personnel and targeted mediapersons at will.

There were reports of largescale violence in Sirsa, Barnala and Malout towns as well. Dera followers resorted to arson to vent their ire.

Several mediapersons were beaten up and the outside broadcasting (OB) vans of some TV news channels were damaged by angry Dera followers.

The police used tear gas shells, and water cannons to control the situation. A fire engine was also set on fire. As soon as the verdict was pronounced, Army — which was on standby — was called in to prevent any untoward incident following the conviction of the Dera chief.

Meanwhile, curfew has been clamped in three Punjab towns —Mansa, Bathinda and Ferozepur.
