Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday took a dig at PM Modi after a fire broke out at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi.

The 48-year-old Gandhi’s jibe came even as the BJP continued to fire at him after he said that he will apologise to the Supreme Court for incorrect attribution of a remark.

“Modiji burning files is not going to save you. Your day of judgement is coming,” Gandhi said in a tweet while retweeting a news update about the fire in the building which houses several government departments.

Gandhi has been accusing the PM of corruption, especially in the Dassault Rafale deal case. The Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions calling for a review of its December 2018 order giving a clean chit to the government.

Shastri Bhawan houses the Ministries of Law, Information and Broadcasting, Corporate Affairs, Chemicals and Petrochemicals, and Human Resources Development.

According to reports, the fire at Shastri Bhawan broke out on the sixth floor and was doused within a few minutes. The cause of fire has not been established.

Earlier today, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi told the Supreme Court that Gandhi has only expressed regret in the incorrect attribution case even as he “deliberately” put words in the mouth of the court.

“Law is clear in contempt cases the line starts with an unconditional apology,” Lekhi’s lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said.

Rahul Gandhi’s counsel, responding to the accusation, said that the Congress president will apologise for “wrongly attributing the ‘chowkidar chor hai’ remark to the SC”.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress president will file a fresh affidavit with an apology by 6 May. The Supreme Court will now hear the matter on May 6.
