The ruling NDA coalition is likely to decide a presidential candidate before Prime Minister Narendra Modi' s visit to the US and the shortlisted candidate will file nomination on 23 June, sources said on Wednesday.

According to reports, senior BJP leaders Venkaiah Naidu and Rajnath Singh have briefed PM Modi about the upcoming presidential elections.

In the run-up to the elections, two names are doing the rounds– Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan for President and Thawarchand Gehlot for vice president's post.

BJP chief Amit Shah earlier formed a three-member panel of Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley to decide on the presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, 17 parties from the Opposition will meet on Wednesday to decide a candidate for presidential elections.

The leaders of JD(U), TMC, RJD, DMK, NCP, CPI, CPI(M), and some other smaller regional parties are expected to meet to decide on the candidate.

According to the Election Commission notification, the election will be held on 17 July, while the last date for the nomination is June 28.
