Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has written a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urging Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader to leave the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) “undisturbed”.

The Congress leader’s letter was a response to a controversy over the NDA government’s plans for a museum for all prime ministers in the Teen Murti complex. The NMML is located in this complex. The Congress has alleged that the government is trying to wipe out Nehru’s legacy.

In his letter, Singh wrote that the NMML is dedicated to the memory of India’s first Prime Minister and “prime architect of the Indian nation-state”.

He warned that “no amount of revisionism can obliterate” the role and contributions of the former Indian PM “who left behind an indelible imprint on our country and indeed on the world”.

Recalling the praise showered on Nehru by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Singh said the departed BJP giant never made any attempt to change the nature and character of the NMML and the Teen Murti complex in any way during his six-year tenure.

“Sadly, that seems to be the part of the agenda of the Government of India now,” he wrote in an accusatory tone.

“The NMMKL must remain a centre of first-rate scholarship and professional excellence. The museum itself must retain its primary focus on Jawaharlal Nehru and the freedom movement,” wrote Singh.

He said that by keeping Teen Murti undisturbed the government will be respecting both history and heritage.

According to reports, the former PM had earlier written to President Ram Nath Kovind asking him to caution Modi from using “unwarranted, threatening and intimidating language” against leaders of the Congress or any other party.
