Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on key areas like trade, connectivity, banking and energy, officials said.

“Civilizational connect, contemporary context! PM @narendramodi welcomed President of Iran Dr. Rouhani to India,” tweeted Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

“Both leaders held substantive & productive discussion on cooperation in trade & investment, energy, connectivity, defence & security & regional issues,” he said.

Prior to his meeting with Modi, Rouhani met EAM Sushma Swaraj and the duo held detailed discussions on strengthening cooperation in education, culture and people-to-people contact.

“A close friend in our extended neighbourhood! EAM @SushmaSwaraj called on President of Iran Dr. Hassan Rouhani. Strengthening cooperation in energy, connectivity, IT, education, culture and people-to-people contact came up for discussion,” tweeted Kumar.

Earlier in the day, Rouhani paid floral tributes at Rajghat, after arriving in the national capital late Friday night

After receiving ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rouhani headed to Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial to lay a wreath and pay homage to father of the nation.

Later in the day, Rouhani will meet President Ram Nath Kovind as well.

On a three-day visit to India at the invitation of Modi, Rouhani addressed Muslim leaders and scholars in Hyderabad on Thursday night and also visited Qutub Shahi tombs, a historic site.

The visiting dignitary later offered prayers at historic Makkah Masjid in the old city and addressed the congregation.

This is the first visit by Rouhani, who is the seventh President of Iran, after taking charge in August 2013.

India and Iran have collaborated on many key projects with the most notable being Chabahar port in southeastern Iran that was inaugurated on December 3, 2017 by Rouhani.

The port bypasses Pakistan, opening up a new strategic transit route between Iran, India and Afghanistan.
