Within a few hours of unilateral ceasefire by the Centre, a 23-year-old boy identified as Hilal Ahmad Parrey was found killed in an orchard in North Kashmir’s Hajin area of Bandipura. Police have begun an investigation.

A BSF jawan was among two persons injured when Pakistan Rangers shelled about 15 Border Out Posts and civilian areas along the International Border (IB) in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu on Thursday.

The firing and mortar shelling along the IB in Samba district started around 2 am, while it started at around 10 PM last night in Kathua’s Hiranagar sector. 

While, one BSF jawan suffered injuries in Samba, a civilian identified as Dost Ram suffered injuries in Hiranagar, police said. 

BSF troops strongly retaliated and the exchange of fire was continuing when reports last came in, a BSF officer said.

Schools in five km area along the IB have been closed by authorities in the wake of the shelling, officials said. An officer said, “Pakistan Rangers violated the ceasefire and resorted to heavy and unprovoked mortar shelling and firing along the IB on 10 to 15 BoPs in Samba and Kathua districts since last night”.

In the exchange of fire, a BSF jawan suffered injuries and has been hospitalised.

The areas hit in the cross-border firing and shelling included Regal, Chalyari, Chachwal, Maguchak, Suchetgarh, Bobiya, Londi, Karol Katav, Manyari, Chann Lal Din of twin districts.

Authorities have activated safe shelters and other facilities and have alerted police for evacuation in case of escalation in the exchanges of shelling and firing.

On Tuesday, a BSF jawan was killed as Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire by opening fire on forward posts to help infiltrators cross the International Border (IB) in Samba sector on. Troops also foiled four infiltration bids along the IB since Sunday.
