Seven prominent media persons in Leh have accused the BJP of attempting to bribe them in a bid to get favourable news coverage for the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat that goes to polls on Monday.

In a complaint to the police on the letterhead of the Press Club, Leh, seven media persons have accused the BJP leaders of trying to bribe them by offering them cash at a press conference.

On the other hand, the state BJP chief, Ravinder Raina, on Sunday threatened to initiate defamation proceedings against these journalists if they did not issue a written apology for “defaming” the BJP.

The BJP candidate, Jamyang Namgyal, is fighting an intense battle with the Congress heavy-weight Rigzin Spalbar for the seat.

Ladakhi media persons, Morupt Stanzin, Tsewang Rigzin, Rinchen Angmo, Tashi Lundup, Stanzin Desal, Tsewang Paldan and Stanstrung Dorjay have filed a jointly signed complaint before the Station House Officer of Leh.

In the complaint, they have said, “We, the undersigned members of the Press Club Leh, would like to lodge a complaint regarding the press conference organised by BJP at Hotel Singay Palace on 2 May 2019 around 2 PM. After the press conference was over, BJP leaders, including state president Ravinder Raina and MLC Vikram Randhawa, tried to bribe the media persons by offering us money in envelopes in an attempt to use our platform to influence the outcome of elections. We didn’t accept the offer and rejected it outright and we showed our anguish at their attempt”.

The complaint further said, “Press fraternity of Ladakh strongly condemns this and we would like you to kindly register an FIR against Ravinder Raina and Vikram Randhawa for violating the Model Code of Conduct and also their attempt to bribe media persons in Ladakh. We would provide all necessary support when required in this regard”.
