The farmers unions in Punjab are all set to join the national level protest against Union government in New Delhi from 23 February seeking debt waiver and implementation of Swaminathan commission’s report.

The farmer leaders have alleged that the NDA government has failed to implement Swaminathan report as it has already filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court (SC) citing its helplessness.

The farmer unions associated with ‘Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh’ (National Farmers Federation) have accused the NDA government for not fulfilling its promise on farmer’s debt waiver and fixation of minimum support price (MSP) to ensure 50 per cent profit for farmers.

“The Finance minister in his budget has again played a hoax with the farmers by announcing that Minimum Support Price (MSP) will be raised 1.5 times the input cost and has tried to play a bluff game with the farmers,” Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Kadian) president, Harmeet Singh Kadian said in a Press conference.

“The working of Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) is very unclear and its calculations are far from reality and purely theoretical. The farmers should be included in skilled labrourers and be given the all benefits they are entitled for,” he said.

Kadian further added that the farmer unions across the nation will sit on protest against the union government. “The union government has miserably failed to fulfill the promises made to farmers in the manifesto.

The present government has taken 22 anti-farmer decisions including Goods and Service Tax (GST) on agriculture implements. The Prime Minister during his election campaigns had made several announcements but nothing has been done so far,” he alleged.

Five farmer unions from Punjab such as BKU Ekta Sidhupur, BKU (Kadian), Doaba Sangharsh Committee, Punjab Border Farmers Union and Patiala based International Kisan Union will also join the movement against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led union government.
