In a rare display of honesty, an employee of Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) returned bag containing cash and valuables worth Rs 6 lakh to its rightful owner.

The bag belonged to a Delhi based family who reached Dharamshala on Saturday to enjoy weekend in the lap of nature.

The guard at Dharamshala bus stand in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, around 240 km from here, had found the bag lying abandoned on a chair.

The Delhi based family had accidently left the bag because of the heavy luggage and other stuff they were carrying.

“It was only after two hours when we reached our relatives place, I searched for my phone and realised that my wife’s purse carrying gold jewellery, two mobile phones and cash was missing,” Rajinder Mann, a 31-year-old engineer from Delhi told The Statesman.

He said they immediately rushed back to the bus stand while fearing worst.

However, 45-year-old guard Sanjeev Kumar found the bag and kept it in his office almirah for safe-keeping.

“I counted the money after finding the purse, jewellry and phones in the bag. I asked the people about the bag but no one claimed it,” Kumar said.

Mann family, which came searching for the bag after two-three hours, appreciated the honesty of Sanjeev Kumar and said the experience had made their visit even more memorable.

“His honesty has left us speechless at the time, when we hear news of thefts and robberies almost every day,” Mann said.

The family expressed their gratitude to Sanjeev Kumar and rewarded this honest HRTC worker with Rs 2,000.
