Fresh Saharanpur caste clash claims another life, 24 held

A Dalit was killed in the fresh violence that erupted again in Saharanpur on Tuesday night shortly after the visit of BSP supremo Mayawati. Unidentified miscreants attacked a group of Dalits near Ambheta Chandpur village when they were returning after attending Mayawati’s rally. Ten others were injured in the incident.

The victim has been identified as Ashish ​of Suankheri village in Sarsawa area of the district, who reportedly succumbed died of bullet injuries. He was cremated in the village on Wednesday morning amid tight security.

The death sparked off tension in the nearby villages and police started a search operation and arrested more than 24 suspects.

Confirming the arrests Saharanpur SSP Subhash Chandra Dubey said raids were still on to arrest the suspects.

A compensation of Rs. 15 lakh has been announced for the family of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for each of the injured, Saharanpur District Magistrate NP Singh, claiming the situation was under control.

The top officials from Meerut and Lucknow, including Secretary (Home), ADG (Law and Order), Meerut ADG are camping in Saharanpur to monitor the situation.

A group of Dalits was attacked by some unidentified people with sharp weapons and gunfire. The injured were rushed to hospital and four critically injured were referred to a Meerut hospital.

In retaliation, Dalits protested in the adjoining Badagaon and Nanauta villages where they damaged a few shops, leading to closure of markets in both the towns.

During her visit BSP Chief Mayawati had appealed people of all the castes and communities to maintain peace and harmony. She had also met victims of the 5 May clashes.
