New Delhi, 22 September
Fleeing from police custody while going for medical examination to hospital proved costly for a 25-year-old Nepali national after he was mowed down by a high speeding truck in Hari Nagar area of west Delhi last night.
Ravi was mowed down by the truck when he jumped off the police bike and tried to flee. He was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital by a cop.
"Ravi landed in police net from west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area on 20 September, after he failed to reveal the purpose of his visit to the Capital. He could not establish his proper identity when quizzed by the cops after spotting him in suspicious condition," said the police.
Ravi was arrested for his alleged involvement in carrying out suspicious activities in residential areas in night. He was first caught by the local residents who then handed him over to the police, complaining he was hunting for vehicles to steal.
Police said that late on Saturday evening, the Delhi Police constable, identified as Kuldeep, took him to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital in Hari Nagar for medical examination. After they reached near the main gate of the hospital, Ravi, jumped off the police bike and began to flee.
"As Ravi was running frantically to evade his arrest, he could not notice a high speeding truck coming from the back side and came beneath the wheels, causing his death on the spot," said the police. His body has been preserved for postmortem.
The truck driver, identified as Nafe Singh, was arrested. The two policemen have also been sent to the district line for dereliction of duty.
Meanwhile, a departmental inquiry has been initiated against the two policemen, Kuldeep and assistant sub-inspector, Abhinandan who apprehended Ravi. His family has been informed.
