In its effort to reduce the rift within West Bengal CPI (M) over aligning with the Congress, the state CPI-M plans to organise movements on several political issues. The party apprehends that long intense debate over forging alliance with the Congress within the party is dampening spirit of the grass root level workers and weakening party strength.

Senior party leaders expressed concern during a Kolkata district unit and state committee meeting that this rift within party will create a setback against upcoming poll campaigning for panchayat and Lok Sabha.
The party also discussed this issue during the two-day state committee meeting vividly and took unanimous decision to launch series of movement against the Trinamul Congress-led government in the state and BJP in the Centre.

Earlier CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury offered his resignation in the party’s recent central committee meet following the issue of aligning with the Congress. Yechury proposed alliance with the Congress and former general secretary Prakash Karat and his lobby strongly opposed it and finally anti- alliance lobby won in the vote. Even without naming Yechury, Karat, later, said those “who violate the party’s collective decisions” are “considered to be factional.”

Around 58 members discussed the draft resolution during two-day state committee meet from Wednesday. The state committee also agreed to launch movement against the anti-people and anti- democratic policy of the Trinamul Congress-led government.

The members also raised the issue of the “rise of RSS and BJP activities in the state with the help of the TMC.” Left Front chairman Biman Bose presided over the meeting. The state committee members were asked to complete all political and organisational programme as soon as possible.

“Party line must be followed by all of party workers from state to booth level. The party will defeat communal and casteist forces by any means in this state,” said a senior CPI-M leader. The rift within West Bengal CPI (M) over aligning with the Congress also came out in open after the party’s Kolkata district unit voted the anti-alliance lobby to power. After a three-day intense debate, members of the CPI(M) Kolkata district committee finally voted in favour of Kallol Majumdar, known to be an hardliner and staunch critic of alliance or adjustment with the Congress.

Majumdar defeated senior leader and former minister Manab Mukherjee in 32-26 votes to became the district committee’s new secretary. Party leaders were asked to bring young forces to launch movements against unemployment, crime against women and child and price hike of the essential commodities.
