Kolkata, 25 October
Under immense pressure from the state administration, School Service Commission (SSC) chairman Chittaranjan Mondal today tendered his resignation late in the evening.
Sources in the state Education Department said Mr Mondal was supposed to meet the chief minister next week but he could get in touch with her.
State Education Minister Bratya Basu confirmed Mr Mondal’s resignation. But Mr Mondal could not be contacted even after several attempts.
Reports had been doing the rounds since early this week that Mr Mondal was under pressure to quit, but the SSC chairman said he had not received any letter from the Chief Minister’s Office asking for his resignation and that he is only answerable to the state education minister in this regard.
Mr Mondal is said to have drawn the ire of state Education Minister Bratya Basu after he refused to comply with the minister&’s wishes to include party supporters in the recruitment panel of successful SSC candidates.
A senior official of
the state Higher Education Department said Mr
Mondal was under pressure from the department to include around 707 candidates in the first merit
list who had not qualified in the written test. But Mr Mondal did not pay heed to the minister’s wishes.
Sources said the minister has also asked Mr Mondal to include candidates who have not qualified in the written test in the second list, but the chairman rejected the proposal.
On Monday the first merit list of the SSC examination was published and 2,19,442 candidates will be given jobs after Kali Puja. But, in defiance of the Trinamul&’s wishes, it did not include any candidate who had not qualified.
A senior official of the state Education Department said Mr Mondal had made his point very emphatically when he published the first merit list without paying any heed to the minister&’s  instructions and tendered his resignation after the list was published.
