MALDA, 18 JUNE: The bandh called by the BJP at Habibpur and Bamangola blocks today, in protest against the killing of their redoubtable leader and panchayat samiti candidate Nripen Mandal (39) was observed peacefully.
Police have arrested one Kamtapur People&’s Party (KPP) member Sukamar Roy (28) of Jiakandar village after the murder.
However, the district BJP president Shibendu Sekhar Roy alleged that police were trying to divert attention as the six persons against whom an FIR was lodged with police were Trinamul Congress supporters.
The deceased BJP leader&’s wife, Ms Doli Mandal, lodged a complaint with police against the Trinamul block Congress president Ujjwal Mishra, TMC panchayet samiti candidate Kisku Murmu, Mriganga Roy, Bibekananda Sarkar, Goutam Roy and youth TMC leader Sougata Roy.
Mr Roy said that police had been going slow in taking action against the accused as they were the ruling party&’s leaders. He said that former Union minister Tapan Shikdar and state BJP general secretary Amalendu Chatterjee would go to Habibpur tomorrow to meet the family members of Mandal. The Trinamul district president and Minister, Mrs Sabitri Mitra, said the BJP was making false allegation against the local Trinamul leaders.
The SP, Malda, Mr Kalyan Mukherjee, said: “Today&’s bandh was peaceful. One person with records of extortion and other crimes was taken into custody for interrogation in connection with the BJP leader&’s killing.”
