Congress leader Sonia Gandhi tried to strike an emotional chord with the voters of Rae Bareli by announcing to hand over her son Rahul Gandhi to them while addressing a joint rally of India Alliance.
" The main reason that I am contesting from Rae Bareli is due to my 2 mothers. Sonia Gandhi gave me birth and Indira Gandhi protected me and taught me. Rae Bareli is the Karambhoomi of both my mothers," Rahul Gandhi said while addressing a rally in Maharajganj area of the constituency.
In a video message, the CPP chairperson said, “The sight of our Constitution and democracy being under threat, our poor being left behind, and the fact that the fabric of our society is being torn apart fills me with anguish.”
Rahul is pitted against the BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh in Raebareli. The Gandhi scion is also contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Wayanad in Kerala.
In a major setback to the Congress party, two of its leaders and observers for two Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, Neeraj Basoya and Naseeb Singh have resigned from the party.
Union minister Bhupender Yadav said, “She (Sonia Gandhi) deliberately used the word sovereignty. Congress manifesto is the agenda of the 'Tukde-Tukde' gang and hence they are using such words,” told reporters.
The case was brought by Swamy, who accused the Gandhis of misusing party funds to buy a firm that published the now-defunct National Herald newspaper.
Ahead of an appeal to be filed in the Surat Court on Monday, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived at Rahul Gandhi's residence here.
Under section 10A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, an elected member can be disqualified by the EC for failure to lodge account of election expenses. A member of Rajya Sabha was disqualified by the EC in July 1991 and the Rajya Sabha Secretariat issued the notification of disqualification. The matter was not referred to the President.
