Siliguri mayor Gautam Deb launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Dabgram II gram panchayat, the local MLA and the Jalpaiguri MP, accusing them of neglecting development in areas under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) that fall within Jalpaiguri district.
Theater Festival 2024 will be held in Siliguri from 13-17 December, mayor Gautam Deb announced on Monday.
The 14 SMC wards, four gram panchayats (DabgramI & II and Fulbari-I& II) come under the jurisdiction of the Assembly segment in Jalpaiguri district.
Deb was trying to encourage the teachers at a time when a section of senior party leaders expressed their grievances over the selection of the party candidate Prof Om Prakash Mishra, for the Siliguri Assembly constituency.
Though the health department had advised him to remain in 14 days' home quarantine, local people had objected to the same, sources said.
It is alleged that several private schools and colleges have increased their fee-structure, even amid the COVID- 19 crisis, following which both state education minister Partha Chatterjee and state principal secretary of school education, Manish Jain, had taken up the matter.
"As all the academic institutions and everything is shut down all of a sudden, we are starting an online programme which will be in a competition format. This competition will be helpful in keeping the students engaged in productive activities during their stay inside their houses,” he said today.
A local man, Asish Saha, said he was with his friends near the spot when they heard a loud bang in the evening.
The agitating farmers, under the Gazoldoba Milanpally Bhumi Raksha Committee, were backed by BJP leaders, who said they would not give an inch of land for the tourism project.
