Making the announcement, Prashant Kishor said that 31 of the 65 candidates in the second list belong to the Extremely Backward Class (EBC), highlighting that no other party has given so many tickets to EBC candidates so far.
The decision to keep away from the Rajya Sabha polls was taken in a meeting of the core committee of the Congress in Srinagar.
Senior NC leaders Choudhary Ramzaan, Sajjad Kitchloo, and party treasurer Shammi Oberoi will be the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, said Nasir Aslam Wani, political advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Lal Bihari Yadav, Dr. Man Singh, and Ashutosh Sinha are currently sitting MLCs and the party has repeated all the three.
In an unusual flip-flop, the BJP withdrew its first list of 44 candidates for the 3-phase assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir minutes after releasing it on Monday morning without assigning any reason before re-issuing two lists containing names of 16 candidates.
The poll panel, in a communiqué, said, “904 candidates from eight States/UTs to contest elections in the seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections scheduled for polling on 1st June.”
Out of 28 candidates facing serious criminal cases, two candidates have declared charges related to rape (IPC Section 376) while four candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section 302, the ADR said.
The elections for these Lok Sabha and Assembly Constituencies will be simultaneously held on June 1 in the state.
A total of 226 candidates had filed their nominations for eight seats but during scrutiny, papers of 175 candidates were rejected, mostly on technical grounds, said EC sources here on Friday.
