The weather took a sudden turn on Monday morning as rain clouds engulfed New Delhi and western parts of Uttar Pradesh as well as some parts of Haryana.

Light rain and thundershowers were witnessed in parts of Agra, Mathura, Bulandshahar, Gautambuddhnagar, Ghaziabad, Hathras districts and adjoining areas leading to a sharp dip in temperatures.

The minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius on Monday morning which was four notches above the season’s average.

“The sky will remain generally cloudy throughout the day with chances of light rain or thunder showers. There are also possibilities of isolated hail storm,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

Chances of rain cannot be ruled out till Wednesday, 23 January.

Visibility dropped and winds of 10 to 15 kmph prevailed slightly affecting rail and air services.

Earlier today, at least 12 trains heading to the national capital were running late by one to five hours due to fog.

At 3 pm today, following the slight drizzle, the humidity was recorded at 67 per cent. According to weather.com, the average temperature is likely to drop to 14 degree Celsius.

Central Pollution Control Board data revealed that the overall air quality of the national capital was ‘very poor’ with air quality index of 345 at many places.

On Sunday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 28.7 degrees Celsius, seven notches above the season’s average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 7 degrees Celsius, the season’s average.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre at Lucknow said that rain and thundershowers are likely to occur during next three hours today at some places over Bijnor, Meerut, Moradabad, Rampur, Budaun, Etah, Amroha, Bareilly, Bagpat districts and adjoining areas.

Reports citing Met officials state that heavy rainfall coupled with snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Dehradun, Nainital and Pithoragarh districts of Uttarakhand on 22 January.
